- This majestic music was the perfect foil to the heroic story portrayed in the 1983 film. The film portrays how the jockey Bob Champion battles against cancer and then goes on to win the 1981 Grand National race at Aintree (Liverpool, UK). The horse he rode in that race, Aldaniti, had himself recovered from a career-threatening injury. So they were both champions in more than one way. After that race, Aldaniti became such a celebrity in his own right that he starred as himself in the film!
Carl Davis's score perfectly captures the mood. In this arrangement I start on the noble Diapason sound and gradually build up to Full Organ by the triumphant end of the piece.
Fun fact: the horse's name was created from the first two letters of the names of each of breeder Tommy Barron's four grandchildren: Alastair, David, Nicola, Timothy.
Played by Paul Broadhurst on the vintage "Father Willis" organ of Christ Church, Birkenhead, UK.
Recorded 6 November 2023

Excellent !❤😊
Merci beaucoup! C’est de la bonne musique à jouer et je suis content que vous ayez apprécié ma version.
Sounds absolutely amazing on the Father Willis.Thankyou Paul.xx
Yes, it's a great piece of music - really evocative. Carl Davis was brilliant at creating moods quickly to suit films and TV (he did that fantastic theme for The World At War which I've also recently recorded). He died on 3 August this year, just a month after the death of his wife Jean Boht (Nellie Boswell in Bread).
Amazing! Also, interesting description. The more you know.
Glad you think so! Many thanks for commenting.
Omg Paul, I was actually holding my breath throughout this piece....You nailed it love x
Thank you for inspiring me to play it!
A majestic and triumphant arrangement for organ that is both uplifting and thrilling in this performance on the glorious Father Willis Organ at Christ Church: bravo, Paul!
Many thanks for the comment, Graham. I didn't know this music until a few days ago, when a lady from the congregation at Christ Church happened to mention that it might work quite well on the organ. Thank you, Jackie! I've really enjoyed putting this arrangement together.
