For day 27, I wanted to introduce a few other weighted movements. Weight vest push ups, weight vest rows and weight vest lunges!
Rings... Lot's of people have questions about ring training. Here is the deal... if you are below the rings, the movements are no harder than if done on a bar, so for instance, pull ups and rows done are rings vs the bar require very similar levels of strength and stability. However, when you are above the rings, as in dips, and push ups, there is an additional stability requirement that adds a very significant challenge.
@K boges. Excellent discussion, thanks so much for this. Just wanted to share a practical experience with loading ring rows, in case it’s of any help. Firstly, I find body weight, but feet-elevated ring rows a good way to load the row without compromising scapular movement. It’s challenging, but feels good.
For weighted, I seem to be able to move my scapular more freely using the belt (which I keep at sternum rather than navel line) rather than the vest.
And lastly, it’s a subtler point, but I also think that the width of ring placement in setup is mechanically more important than most credit it for. To really allow scapular movement ‘around’ the ribcage, that cue to pull the rings apart on the concentric works wonders. And for that, I suspect the ring straps should be at a spacing that alligns the angle of your forearms in a straight line with the straps when you’re at the top of the rep, with scapular retracted, and having pulled the rings apart a bit (tough to describe - sorry for the wordiness). When the rings are too narrow, it seems to limit scap movement and the line of pull is off.
Anyway, hope it’s in any way helpful. After all, your channel’s been a great help in clarifying some training concepts for me. Best, Duncan
I always look at it as rings are hard for push exercise due to stability requirement and easier on the pull exercise, I never thought of it as above or below the rings, a fresh take on perspective! ☺️
Day 27!!! I am still hanging in there. Going without weights today, but hope to get stronger
I use Parallette Bars to do Push Ups, I think doing Push Ups on rings is more of a tricky skill with marginal hypertrophy benefits. When I want to make things challenging using the Parallette Bar Push Ups, I wear a weight vest & incorporate pause reps & prop my feet up on a foot stool. I'm 198cm tall, 120kg with a 210cm wing span so calisthenics will always pose a significant challenge without needing to add additional instability.
I feel personally that ring pull-ups are slightly harder for me as in around 1 Rep more difficult.
Most probably because to keep from swinging you need to lock all your core stabilisers in way more then bar pull-ups .
More energy requirement for ring pull-ups
Some people will try to bend the bar doing pullups or chins, so it can be harder when they switch to rings. One pullup bar I use is supported from the centre, so I can put rings on it from the sides. I use a silicone pad which protects the wooden rings and stops them sliding, I can do more than on straps.
Can you tell me who makes those parallettes?
Kind regards….
Rogue. There products or top notch.
İ dont have rings. Anybody knows alternative variations this movement?
Hey Kyle, I notice you only did 1 set of about 100 reps of lunge walks. I'm currently following a program of aiming for approx 15-16 sets per week at between 1-5 RFEM per set. Do you end up doing 4 sets of 100 and you only show 1 in this video, or do you opt for a single very high rep set? Would imagine the single very high rep set would introduce a LOT of fatigue for less stimulus?
Question on the weighted ring rows. You said your lats take over, isn't that good?
Great question!
It depends on why you are rowing. If you are rowing for lat strength, then it would be fine, but I would argue that you are better served by doing pull up for lat strength, since they have a better resistance curve and move the lats through a more complete range of motion. If you are training rows for scap retraction strength, often times the lats overpower the scap retractors, resulting in a sort of "arm pull" looking row in which there is very little scapular movement. I prefer to train rows light, and really focus on scapular retraction, and terminate my sets when I can no longer perform the row with scapular retraction. In this way, I'm not at all looking for my lats to take over during the row.
Is there a reason you don't elevate your feet when doing your bar push ups? Just wondering
Just a different variation. I do both.
Don’t you think that you should bulk up a little?
No
Bulk up for what?
I think people find ring pull ups harder because you have to slow the rep or the rings will move, so harder to cheat or using momentum....
Definitely a great point!
Totally agree with you. What's more, I would almost say that the pull-ups on rings are slightly easier or at least more "healthy" with the joints, which sometimes, in my case, gives rise to being able to do more repetitions than with the bar.
Now when you're over the top, push-ups are another matter and Dips ... directly are another world. To be successful it is best to master Ring Support Hold before thinking of doing any Dip.
There is a lot of wisdom in what you said here. Excellent points, Antonio.
Did you build your pull-up bar rig? What were the basic instructions as it seems very stable. Thank you for all your good information. I am currently following calimovs beginners course.
Yeah it is a custom pull up bar. You can contact a local welder/fabricator and have one made.
Also, what’s your opinion on l-sit chin ups / pull-ups
Where can I get those bars you are doing the push ups with
How high off the ground are they?
Over a foot?
Mine are from Rogue. They are probably around 10 inches high or so.
Can you a guide on ring muscle up?
Yeah I think I can work this into a video. Personally, I find the ring muscle up easier than the bar. A few key points to consider and as long as your pull ups and dips are strong, it should not be too tough.
Due to being away from home this weekend I was forced to do Ring pull ups instead of normal pull ups today. It was significiantly harder for me. My count went down from 15 12 11 to 13 10 9. Grip rotation went from an OG to neutral or light UG during the pull. And due to height of the rings I couldn't keep my legs straight. Especially the bottom of the movement felt harder. But maybe I am just imagining things and had a bad day...
what's the vest you're using ? and how many pounds is it ? :)
That is a BOX 45lb vest.
Which diameter do you recommend for rings - 28mm or 32mm?
I really like cycling between weighted / unweighted ESPECIALLY using rings.
Great video man, I've started training with rings some months ago and no matter how strong I was on bar dips, on rings I feel like a complete beginner again haha by the way, I'm in love with the landscape in your videos, which country is it?
Hello sir.
What brand of parrellettes are you using in this video?
I’m doing some strict sets of arch back bar pull-ups, and personally I find them somewhat easier than rings, but the rings permit the natural path of the shoulder and elbow and in this sense are superior.
hey man, any advice on good quality rings that are widely available please? I am in the UK. TIA!
I really like Rogue stuff. The quality is really good.
Really late reply but the wooden rings from Bulldog gear are really good.
@@mcewenben Cheers I have some now..
I bought the cheapest rings available and they are fantastic! It's been about 3 years. IMO even the most basic pair should be sufficient, but you can always invest in more if you want. I think the straps with markings are worth it.
Do you have a video that you share where you bought all/some the equipment you use? Your videos have been very helpful, thanks!
What weight vest and parallettes do you use?
What planche bar do you use?
Great content as usual, thanks
How do you edit the video so that two videos run at the same time?
Hey doron! I use iMovie and do "Picture in Picture".
@@Kboges thank you
@@Kboges Do you edit the video on your computer or in an app on your phone? Is it paid?
When you are doing push-ups in this video , don’t you think your hip should be a bit straight and go down a little bit along with the upper body ? Want to know why if l’m wrong because i do it that way
What you are describing is how Vince Gironda did the push up. I don't remember what he called them, but yeah it's a totally killer variation.
Hey man, are rings easier on the joints than parallettes? Most videos on RUclips suggest they are because you’re allowed to move more freely.
They usually compare rings to bench pressing when talking about how much easier on the joints rings are.
Hi there. Thanks for amazing content. What brand of weighted vest are you using in this video? Thanks.
I use a BOX 45lb vest. I love it! It's absolutely tough as nails. I've had it for a decade and it survived use in my commercial gym during that time.
@@Kboges Thanks for the timely response man! Thanks for all the great content.
@@turo3066 My pleasure dude! Thank you for the support!
Equipment: Weight Vest, Parrallette Bars, Rings. All missing from your description. I like your work. It's just incomplete.
