- Thanks PCBWay.com - Did you know that Teddy Ruxpin is controlled by nightmare sounds hidden on a cassette tape? Did you know that this is very exploitable?
Let's mistreat an original 1985 Teddy Ruxpin, in the name of science!

I did this in 1985 with my little sisters teddy ruxpin…. I just put an Iron Maiden cassette tape in it. The little guy looked like it was possessed. It was hilarious.
You put way too much effort into this. Just put a heavy metal tape in the player and make it go! Same result
@@tommythomas5970 Naw, man. 2 Live Crew works better, and could you picture families reaction to Teddy Ruxpin mouthing “Welcome To The ….Shop!!!”?
Same. Van Halen II.
My 4th grade crush told me about the servo track. Her dad deduced to and she had to share. ❤️
Always wanted to do the same with van Halen's Diver down album, lol. This video's the next best thing for me.
I remember putting Sabbath Metallica and crew into mine😂🍻
The signal Teddy uses is actually exactly the same as in older model remote controls with 8 channels. The control track on the tape actually controls Teddy as well as Grubby; Grubby was an accessory toy you could plug into Teddy with the same movements and a speaker. The second deeper voice on the Tape is Grubby.
The tape and tape player are now obviously degraded and that's why the movements bleed over and the sound is really garbled.
The Channels are used as follows:
1 - sync/unused
2 - Teddy eyes open/close
3 - Teddy Jaw control 1
4 - Teddy Jaw control 2 (later revisions omitted this servo but the control track was still there)
5 - Speaker switch (controls if sounds play through Teddy, Grubby or both)
6 - Grubby eyes open/close
7 - Grubby Jaw control 1
8 - Grubby Jaw Control 2 (same as with later Teddy revisions)
🤓 Who is a cares, Teddy Ruxpin 's magical! ✨
I was given my older sister's Teddy as a hand-me down toy and she put way too much effort in using it to outright terrorize me after my parents foolishly let me watch one of the Childs Play movies they rented. Of course I've blocked all this out so I get to live vicariously through their telling of the story.
I kicked the head in of my 'My buddy' doll and he lived shoved in the corner of my closet with a busted skull. All because of the child's play movie.
A friend of mine had one and decided to put his 2 Live Crew cassette in…..you can imagine the looks of whoever opened it at Christmas when they first played it!
A new use for ChatGPT. May the nightmares continue.
I had always wondered how this thing worked. I remember it was really expensive for a toy in 1985, I used to call it Teddy Seventy-Dollarpin because I thought that was outrageous for a toy in '85. But one of my cousins, who was born in '83, had one and played with it all during the rest of the 1980s. I did what a lot of other people did and stuck heavy metal tapes in him when I was over there. Teddy Ruxpin would move, but not in time with the music, and I had no idea why it was random. This makes sense; it would only move with a non-Teddy Ruxpin tape when the other stereo track made a noise that the motor recognized.
And now that I see that it needed an separate PCB with all of those parts, I understand why it cost the equivalent of $200 today. It wouldn't be anything to make one now, but in 1985 it was kind of a big deal.
When you pulled out the bass and started going, I about died laughing hahah
I about died when he started playing Pennywise!
today's kids will never know the joy of playing black sabbath through a teddy ruxpin.
I used to put hardcore mix tapes into my nieces Teddy Ruxpin. It seemed to respond best to Agnostic Front and Murphy's Law.
I still say you must add real teeth into his mouth, and play old slayer tapes through him. This was my teenage dream, but I never found any in the thrift store.
I am unreasonably excited to see him loaded up with an AI. And real teeth. Doing crimes.
Couldn't you just buy one of those (problematic, ate childrens hair too) cabbage patch kids that can eat things, and modify those?
@@NaoPb I had no idea those existed, omg what a mental picture! I am so sad I made it this far in life not knowing the joy of a cabbage patch doll trying to eat a small child.
I love the Teddy Ruxpin kids show series much better!!
Imagine a casette to aux converter, a rpi or other sbc running an ai and code to output that signal to the speaker and output drive signals for the motors
Please! I want to see Teddy Ruxpin singing Angel of Death! 😆
The title makes this sound like an adult video. You can love your Teddy Ruxpin; just don't LOVE your Teddy Ruxpin.
As we know, PCB stands for Pretensibly Creepy Bear!
1985 brought us both cool and creep tech. :)
Super Mario and Teddy Ruxpin!
I remember when Teddy Ruxpin came out. The stuff of nightmares!
I think the toy robot that spit out steam/smoke out its mouth or ears came out in 84 or 85 too. I think it was made by either Sears or Radio Shack. Admittedly, that robot was alot of fun.
I also had both Capsula and Construx. These building kits (however you call them) were fun. Putting together "vehicles" that propelled on their own very fascinating.
Gotta love 80s toys!
The new Teddy Ruxpin... THAT is terrifying. This one is adorable in comparison.
When it turns off you see those lifeless, beady, black eyes.
Next video: Installing BeOS on Teddy Ruxpin
You've been copystruck by
You've been copystruck by a
Teddy Ruxpin
I was not expecting you to jam out on the bass! Sick mate!
Okay, now a real challenge: at one point, PBS, Microsoft and the creators of "Barney the Dinosaur" and "Arthur" created animatronic dolls of Barney, Arthur and DW. The dolls not only talked, but had head and arm movements. Creepy. They also had some built in 'games' but with a special attachment to your TV or VCR would animate the dolls in sync with actions on the video. This was done by decoding pulses embedded in the video and could be seen an the far left hand of the screen. It was real creepy.
Barney was the first model and the motors whizzed and whirred like a Terminator. "I love youu....."
They're probably difficult to find as the experiment didn't work well and didn't sell well. But messing with them... that would be a challenge!
I did not have "Hear the bass track from Bro Hymn on a Teddy Ruxpin" on my scorecard for today.
Pennywise through a Teddy Ruxpin is a revelation
Kind of ironic that the retro computer guy I think kind of resembles a big teddy bear with glasses, is doing a video on a teddy bear 🤓😎🥸😀
TIL there's a band in Massachusetts named Theodore Ruxpin.
I can imagine this getting really wild really fast and I'm here for it.
They've found creative ways to use good'ol cassette tape in the 80s! Directly derived from the tape storage of home computers back then. Nice bass playing BTW!
8:06 Probably why Ruxpin has a colorful personality
This is why I subscribe to this channel. Where else can we witness a grown man playing the bass intro to Muse's "Hysteria" through a Teddy Ruxpin?
Exactly.
as i understand it, only half of that control track is actually meant for teddy, it also contains the control waves for his companion grubby who links to him over a specialized aux cord and is much harder to find in working order, something about a rotting pcb iirc
I was born in '86 and had one when I was very young. I remember it stopped working at some point. (Maybe leaky batteries or something) Not sure if he's still somewhere at my parents' house but probably long gone by now.
don't know if I discovered your channel because I, too, am a bass player, or if because I also have an unreasonable amouts of old macs at home, BUT GOSH THIS ONE WAS EXCELLENT xD
His wires are so colourful. It makes me happy that he's full of rainbows
Teddy Roosevelt wants to know your location...
I'd love to see him speak with AI voices of celebrities like Robert Stack and Jay Leno, and the Reddit computerized voice, Dr. Sbaitso, and a Star Trek computer voice! All while responding to words that he hears you speak!
Having a wee bit of fun... more of this please!
Did you try playing a scale on the bass to find out if different frequencies create specific movements?

LOL this is awesome! - Can’t wait to see more..!
Great, now that you've played the track audibly you've summoned a demon.
Now we need someone to record an entire album with a Teddy Ruxpin.
can't wait for part2
Thanks for helping me relive my childhood nightmares. Good times.
Put it on the front door and make it scare people...
SICK bass playing, wow!
These videos are awesome! I can't wait to see if you can crack the code so you can make specific eye and mouth movements. I will have Grubbies at VCF Southwest next year! I hope to see you there again!
Imagine turning it into a bluetooth speaker - now that would be terrifying
I'm planning to do a similar thing. The problem is they didn't sell these in my part of the world. I tried buying one online but lost to someone else back then. I'd probably have to try again sometime.
Man, Teddy Ruxpin plays some real good bass! Who knew.
I did like the actual cartoon based on the toy because it had such a strong Disney influence due to the fact that it was created by a former Disney employee named Ken Forsse.
Teddy Ruxpins used the standard-fair Tanashin cassette decks from the time.
Dude your a bass player! Wow you just stepped up a notch in my book. Nice!
I just discovered your channel tonight! I'm 2 months ahead of this video and I'm already dying to see part 2! Honestly, the creepiest part about Teddy Ruxpin was when the batteries would run low and Teddy would demonically talk. I'm pretty sure that's when all Teddy Ruxpin owners like myself were scarred for life.
when I was little I used to play random cassettes through my own teddy ruxpin one Time I made a cassette of me talking and it looked so goofy ahh
yo, what if you do the reverse and have the teddy ruxpin play sound as an input via the amp somehow?
Never knew I needed to hear Pennywise on a teddy ruxpin XDD
Poor Teddy
Ohhh my gosh this is AMAZING. That bear is so cute and so COOL!!! Kinda reminds me of the iDog mp3 speaker line from the late 2000s, but more fluffy
+1000 for Pennywise! I mean please no copyright strikes
Waiting for Teddy Ruxpin Mac ;-)
Seems like a very unholy thing to do to bring Teddy alive. This is how B horror movies begin.
Venture bros - “I love sliding down rainbows”hahaha.
Let's be honest: Teddy had it coming.
So how does it split the control signals, can you author your own tapes with something like multi tone signalling?
I'm not gonna lie, I really want this to somehow contain a HomePod so when you talk to Siri, it responds via Teddy Ruxpin. If memory serves Disney did a Mickey and Goofy pair who conversed using similar tech, don't know if the helps for your convo project!
I wonder what would happen if you put the Hypnotoad sound into the control track
i've still got my ruxpin, grubby the cassette tapes AND the vhs tapes! my mom got us the whole thing and we played with it constantly lol
Oh yeah as an 80s kid you had to put a Black Sabbath tape in the poor bear at least once. I was modding a furreal pony to take over the servos but lost it in a flood never finished it. There is one floating around the internet that was modded to run on an arduino and breathe fire of all things that I was taking inspiration from
Place your bets, next video will be:
a) doing the world's first cpu upgrade on a teddy.
b) trying to get BeOS to run on the teddy.
c) turning the teddy into the world's most adorable/nightmare inducing fire hazard.
d) c, then a then b.
Cursed Shenanigans, for sure! 😈
I've been enjoying the glimpses into your music taste in the last few videos. I figured you'd been a hardcore guy at some point in the past... The punk bass lines just confirm my suspicions
Have Big Clive reverse-engineer it? Needs to go through stormy seas surrounding the Isle of Man though.
The same company also made "The Talking Mother Goose" which also uses a cassette tape
The best tape to play in a Teddy Ruxpin is 2 Live Crew's "As Nasty As They Wanna Be." You haven't lived until you've seen him sing "Me So Horny."
5:45 Was that Muse? What was the title..
Hysteria?
What cassette adapter did u use?
Looks great with the fur taken off.
My dad did this in the 80s when I was small, it needed to be fixed but my god it was scary
"Je savais ce qu'il fallait faire pour faire fonctionner le bateau volant !"
I knew what I had to do to make that flying ship to work...or something like that ! ;)
BRO HYMN TRIBUTE ! This one's for Jason !
That's what I'd call a "Ruxtaposition."
Do you want to be killed in a horror movie? Because this is how you get killed in a horror movie. 😁
It reminds me of a video I saw many years ago where a woman (inexplicably dressed for a Japanese maid café) disembowelled a Furby and rewired it so that it talked "Martian". At one point, with Furby guts all over the table, she said cheerfully "Disgusting, isn't it?"
Link please
Good stuff starts at 5:55 -- who knew our lovable nerdy friend could shred! (Can I subscribe twice?)
It looked like when you played higher notes on gitar it moved the eyes only
Good lord, that was ridiculous... gave me an idea though... How about trying to produce an entirely new song only using vintage computers? I bet you'd have fun with that!
I would not be surprised if this was the first time in history Pennywise was played through Teddy Ruxpin
If its for science its all legit and ok, Teddy Ruxpin signed up for it.
huh? it sounded pretty interesting as fx for bass
The defiling of teddy ruxpin. A modern classic!
I too had one of these (albeit the Hasbro one post-Worlds of Wonder bankruptcy), but never thought to throw in my Mr. Big tape.
Kind of want to RGB mod my Glo Worm now.
Nice 👍
6:45 well... they could fix him, but he'll never be top of the line again.
it feels like everyone forgot about teddy...
And if you play Dark Side of the Moon in it your child may require some therapy.
Would have been cool to have seen the FFT (spectral view) of the motor track.
I had one of those when I was a kid until my sister destroyed it, still mad at her for that honestly. 😔
I wanna see more
All I wanted was this Teddy Ruxpin for christmas. Instead I got a nintendo.
It would make for a great Google Assistant/Alexa/HomePod thingy 😂
I was a llittle more physically rough with my Teddy Ruxpin broke his mouth.
What exactly did you insert in its mouth ?
@@cappaculla I was playing with the mouth opening and closing it manually
@@cappacullahis di…
You play the bass?
Red LED eyes, please. OK, RGB eyes eyes for even more fun.
Replace the crappy speaker with a cerwin vega stroker! 😅
I think it is an 8 ohm speaker. It won't be easy to find a modern speaker that sounds better and louder that is 8 ohms.
The French tape was way better than the alternative inputs for syncing the mouth and eyes to the words. You have to figure out how to make that lower channel open the mouth and eyes and hand enter the sounds or wherever they are to match the French tape/
Also, I would like to see him taking a bluetooth input from a phone or tablet.
And, finally, take an AI control for conversation. I am guessing he does not come with a mic on his body, so that needs to be added and linked to the AI source.
Maybe you don't need bluetooth if you have a powerful enough INTERNAL computer like a Raspberry Pi 5 to decode the voice inputs and choose and output a voice response with mouth and eye movements. How about a better speaker in the same place and a tweeter in the mouth?
Rockford Fosgate and amp upgrade for Teddy?
Future Attractions... "AR's Chuck Cheese AI Orchestra"
I have heard this is how DAVROS started ...
