That was a great story. And it wasn't about Shorty Spero. Although from what I understand Spero was also a volatile guy. Herbie Gross is actually talking about a New Jersey mobster named Nicky Valvano.

Spero was killed by Gravano's buddy Gerard Papa and Papa was whacked later for it by Dom Cataldo and 2 other guys. Blew Papa's head completely off with a shotgun. The Colombos were notoriously brutally violent. Spero was just one violent fish in a sea of them in that family. Colombos appealed to violence as a solution to any problem moreso than the other families.

I wouldn't think so. He was interviewed between '83 and '84; he looks pretty old in this clip.
