Title: Secrets of Andaman and Nicobar Tourism | Cellular Jail | Chidiya Tapi
The Cellular Jail, situated on South Andaman Island, was constructed during the British colonial era in India, specifically in the late 19th century. It was designed to confine and isolate political prisoners, activists, and freedom fighters who posed a threat to British rule in India. The construction of this imposing complex began in 1896 and was completed in 1906. Its unique design earned it the name "Cellular" because it consisted of seven wings radiating from a central tower, which allowed for solitary confinement, making it a particularly cruel and inhumane place of punishment.
The construction of the Cellular Jail was no easy feat. Thousands of laborers, primarily Indian and Burmese prisoners, were subjected to grueling work under harsh conditions. The entire structure was built using local materials, like red bricks and teak wood, which were transported from the Indian mainland. The harsh environment of the Andaman Islands made this project incredibly challenging, but the British authorities were determined to create a facility that would crush the spirit of Indian revolutionaries.
During World War II, Japan occupied the Andaman Islands, including the Cellular Jail. This period saw further atrocities and suffering inflicted upon the prisoners held within its walls. However, in 1945, Japan surrendered, marking the end of their occupation. The Cellular Jail, which had been a symbol of Indian resistance, was returned to India and eventually became a monument to the country's struggle for independence.

Cost of food is a bit higher than the mainland but its tasty. You should definitely try seafood if you are a non vegetarian 😁
