Or just go with a Montessori and Waldorf philosophy and don’t make them do something they aren’t developmentally ready for. There is a reason these children have higher standardized test scores. In Sweden, formal education does not start until age 7. This is for a GOOD REASON!!!!!!!

There are so many things that aren't right here. 1. Did you talk about the story before you read it? 2. Don't cover the pictures! There are so many cues in the picture and using the picture is an essential strategy. 3. Model, model, model. Read the sentence and have them read it back to you. 4. Your child is 4, you need to work on letter sounds and meaning together not apart from one another. Try using a range of strategies and questioning rather than just sounding out words. Eg. The boy is j-. What is the boy doing here? He is jumping. The boy is jumping.

Put books on the back of the toilet. Age and reading level appropriate ones, of course. As long as there aren't any electronics (like phones and ipads) allowed in the bathroom, putting books on the back of the toilet or in a reachable drawer will probably get all of them reading while they're pooping, if nothing more than out of sheer boredom. My parents did that for me and my siblings from the moment we started learning to read, and it was like a catalyst. They'll improve on their own just by doing that.

As a teacher and reading specialist, why is she teaching a 4 yr old how to read when she has no patience? I can tell she has no clue what she’s doing. Let the teachers teach and then reinforce what they’re teaching. This is where homework comes in. It lets the parents know what they can work on at home. In the meantime, the best way you can prepare your child is to read, read, read to them! Instill in them a love of reading. Make it an enjoyable activity so they will want to learn to read. Pressuring them will not get them there faster.
