  • Utilities are often overlooked. But things like mixing, attenuating, inverting, and adding offset are what makes patches great. Today we take a closer look at Arkan from Malstrom. A module that can tackle all the basics, but adds voltage controlled polarizing to the mix. So, it can be used as a regular VCA, VC inverter and ring modulator as well. Beside that it can gain or boost signals into distortion or wave shaping. And it can do all that twice.

    Not the first module a newcomer like me would think of, but then you create a patch and find out you need these handy utilities. Thanks again!

    Lovely! Entirely applicable to CV utilities in general, so not “just” a product demo.
    I particularly appreciate you mentioning off-center audio signals and reassuring us that AC-coupled modules relieve this problem.

    Thanks for this...it's been on my list for CV processing, but your waveshaping/distortion examples make it really compelling for audio duties, too. 👏

    Fantastic demo as usual! I love utilities like this - I already have Blinds and Samara which offer some of this functionality, but neither of them offer the extra gain which enables the more interesting distortion and waveshaping patches here. Another one for the shopping list 😂

    This reminds me of the Tiptop MISO, but arguably better because this has CV control over key functions. And I say this as a fan of the MISO!

    Curious if/how you are controlling cv around your system. Do you use the a2v faderbank or are you handling everything through Droid? Im trying to figure out how I can get more hands on and avoid the cable mess sitting on top of modules I want to access for expression and transition. Thanks!

    Hi, Thanks for another great video! I have two quick questions re this module, if you don't mind answering: can you achieve PWM-ish sounds by offseting a triangle wave? To your ears, how does the ring mod compare to other options available? (As in, is it top notch?) Thanks again for your content and cheers!

    Very clever module! Any quick opinion on the Arkan vs. the Bastl Waver in terms of features?

    • @MonotrailTechTalk
      @MonotrailTechTalk  Год назад +1

      Glad you liked it! I think Waver is like a single channel of Arkan, but expanded with more options focused on audio/sounddesign. Arkan has the dual channel and I'd say more a go to for CV processing.

      Hi there! Really like Malstrom and the guy behind it is very friendly. He already offered me one, but I want to focus a bit on non-module-specific content for a while. Might find a way to work the module in a video though, as it looks awesome! :)

    Is this a more compact version of the Buchla dual voltage processor?

    • @MonotrailTechTalk
      @MonotrailTechTalk  Год назад +1

      Hi there! In practice a lot of similar things can be achieved. But if I'm correct the Buchla design has a first input with attenuverter, and then two regular inputs with voltage controlled cross-fading. This setup is a lot more intuitive in my opinion :)

    • @moodlesmodular
      @moodlesmodular Год назад

      @Monotrail Tech Talk I've had my eye on the buchla for a while, but your video has me reconsidering. Unfortunately most demos of the buchla that I've seen focus more on audio crossfading rather than on the waveshaping you.were doing with the arkan.

    • @malstromaudio
      @malstromaudio Год назад +1

      Hi Moodles! The voltage processor was one of the modules I researched during the development. And there are definitely some similarities. The crossfade feature was actually in the design at first. But was later removed to put more focus on waveshaping. So the curvature control was added and the crossfade was then somewhat replaced with the modulation strength knob. Where you crossfade between your unmodulated and modulated signal.

    Seems a real lot like A*B+C

    • @GhostKitchenBand
      @GhostKitchenBand Год назад +2

      Yep, but A*B+C doesn’t have a curve control. Seems that allows more expressive control over cv. My biggest complaint with A*B+C is that there’s no easy way to completely zero out the inputs. It doesn’t have a center detent or a large dead zone in the center. So when I use it as a basic 4-channel mixer, there’s always a little leakage. Otherwise, i find ABC extremely useful, and I really like the character of the clipping. It’s smaller than this Arkan module too

    • @MonotrailTechTalk
      @MonotrailTechTalk  Год назад +2

      Also a cool module! There is some good utility out there. This one is more like A+B*C though, I think I prefer that, the mixing before the polarizer. But haven't used the Befaco one yet. Also think the the massive gain and curve control are standing out.

    • @GeorgeLocke
      @GeorgeLocke Год назад

      Thanks for the replies. They're certainly not identical. afaict the only reason is rather have A*B+C rather than this is hp.

    • @tracyharms3548
      @tracyharms3548 Год назад +1

      George, I also like the jack organization better on A*B+C. But Arkan might displace that one despite that.
