    Look I agree 100% I don't want to spend the money and it's a shame to let the residents be destroyed we should just keep it is a historical tour site? And maybe proceed with a slight change of address us. That place is a security nightmare and I agree 100% with Rick. And I'm not for Unnecessary spending on vanity project but that place is a disaster waiting to happen and a testament like the museum that it is to a bygone era when Canada was a peaceful place.

    I wouldn't tear the place down, we should keep it and make it historical, but the thing is I think its worth renovating. Its 30 million yes, but also it is our national treasure, if we are willing to renovate parliament we can renovate this. About the security issues, yes there are security issues but we also aren't the US. We don't have as many haters as they do.

    I know that Rideau Cottage was supposed to be temporary, but why not just move the home of the Prime Minister there? It would share the security already provided to Her Excellency the Governor General.

  • @aprilz6540

    ...and the second any PM would suggest doing that, ya'll would be pacing the streets ranting about how much taxpayer money is being wasted by a PM on her or his posh digs. No good deed goes unpunished.

      The large issue is that most Canadians do not see the sussex residence as their own. It took me a couple of seconds the first time Rick insinuated that it was. Yes, true that the residence is figuratively Canada and what dignitaries see when they come to talk to our Prime Minister. But looking past the big paycheque and benefits of being Prime Minster is not easy for most Canadians.

      First off, I should really preface this by saying that as an American, I'm probably the last person on Earth who should be lecturing about national images and symbolism, considering that our "glass house" is tissue thin right about now. But, here goes...
      I can definitely understand that point of view. But it's just sad to realize that the cost of maintaining and updating is would have been a lot more manageable than having to scrap it altogether and start anew. It really is your house, and can be a powerful reflection of the State in general. Especially in a strong, well-functioning democracy, it is a very tangible illustration of the fact that, while the occupants come and go at the will of the people, the house that symbolizes the democracy, is constant.
      But again...that's an American take on the subject, so, ymmv.

    It should be rebuilt or replaced so that the leader of Canada has an official residence just Britain and the U.S. After that whoever is residing in the official residence should be forced to maintain it. Rick is right as always.

    How about we just force Justin and his family to share Stornoway with the opposition leader? Maybe that'll make for a little more civility and cooperation into government?

  • @shieh.4743

    I agree. Turn that residence into a museum and build a proper residence.

    We need to have a secure home for our voted in leader. That said, it's historical, build a new one somewhere else. Give me the contract, I'll do it cheaper than anyone else.

    It has been 150 years since it was built. Either name it has a historic site or rebuild a modern home on that site. The Prime Minister does need a new residence. I don't think any Canadians would agree to live in a home with asbestos...

    • @Corbiel
      @Corbiel 4 года назад

      Many homes until the 1980's used asbestos. My brothers home and even my own home have it in the attic

    My roof leaks in at least 4 places. I need a new floor and need to replace the windows. when its windy my front door blows open and I have to prop a broom on it to keep it shut.
    but welcome to Canada everyone... hey sunny days

      Robert Loblaw you also must agree that the vets are asking for more than we can give? Perhaps we could have allowed the veterans some extra time on that stupid hockey rink, or perhaps shared some of Trudeau's wife's imported bottled water that the diva desperately needed instead of more economical options.
      of course, its our money, so we should just be happy when they want to take private planes to take their nanny's to far away destinations in favour of giving our veterans what they need, and having proper politics going on in parliament..

  • @64standardtrickyness

    If I may ask a pleb question why is it so expensive to renovate this house?

  • @youngzm
    @youngzm 6 лет назад

    I agree in tearing it down. If you can build a luxury home for $2-3 million, why not spend the proposed money (maybe the remaining 20m on the 30m overestimate) on a more complete structure that is more homey for an "average Canadian family" that a prime minister might bring, more security as what would befit a world leader, and some property to put it on? At least this way the roof would at least carry a 25-year warranty...

    I dunno'... It is always terrible to lose beautiful, historic buildings. The $30 million would be better spent fixing it than tearing it down and building something new, simply for the fact that being historical AUTOMATICALLY makes it better. Plus, 24 Sussex is our 10 Downing or 1600 Pennsylvania. I'm not eager to lose that.

      Robert Loblaw This Prime Minister is an absolute embarrassment to this country, plain and simple. Between his debacle of a trip to India and lying about not requiring a PAL to purchase a firearm, amongst many others, he’s a total joke. Fact is he’s a pussy and forcing Service Canada to speak in gender neutral terms is another way to spread his snowflake chicken shit agenda.... Whether or not it was court ordered our government could have appealed the decision and fought it further if they wanted to.... He’s a push over. Our country has lost all respect on the world stage and in 2019 he’s the fuck outta there.... think first!

    • @Kallen50000

      Isn't half the point that partisan bullshit is causing this problem. You are blind and ranting off about shit that is untrue. misleading, uninformed or all of the above. 1) no one with half a brain goes to bed thinking 'I'm a liberal and proud of it' 2) Choice to pretend like Harper was a perfect angel who didn't dismantle environmental protections on our oceans and national parklands let alone get paid to rape us unconscious for the oil industry (same thing is happening from JT). 3) You are easily misled by media, go grow a full brain and become a full Canadian because we don't run around spouting off like Americans.
      You don't give a shit where Canada goes, you only care that your team wins. How about focus on legit issues and what must be done for the good of all Canadians. Hint, It's not oil pipelines. Alberta has a fucking nutcase as a Premier and is leveraging stupidity to gain rewards from the oil industry for herself, not the future of that province or mine.
      The sooner we implement proportional representation the sooner we can start working to solve these problems in a smart way. Partisan crap like yours helps no one and encourages other limited people like yourself to remain willfully retarded.
