I rarely do water changes. I even save my filter water for my resurrection jars, which helps build your long-lasting food web. It's been almost a year since I've done any water changes! I follow the natural Father Fish method! Bringing nature into your aquarium!

FF method definitely isn't a beginner style system but of all the methods I've used in 26 yrs it's my fav, I've not done a water change in 2 years and my free ammonia is 0.000000000003 ppm

All my fish 'know' me versus other people in all of my 70+ tanks, so the three-second memory is definitely a myth...! Mulm is one of the greatest things you can have for your fry...! It's loaded with "micro critters", as said in your video... In my outdoor pools/ponds, they're full of hair algea and everything breeds like crazy out there...! Comets, common plecos, gambusia, heterandria Formosa, mollies, platys, guppies all love the algea...!!! Also, I too use my tap water(heavy chloramine) to clean all my sponge filters for the last 20+ years and have never seen any ill effects from doing so...!! I loved this video and you were spot on with the myths that you dispelled...!!! Thanks for sharing... Keep up your awesomeness...!

You’re looking good and sounding a heap more confident! Really liking the new style 👌100% agree with all of these also the API quick start and similar products are there as a helper to do the fish in cycle not so you CAN do a fish in cycle! to many novice aquarist see RUclipsrs use these products and think it’s ok to add the 50 odd fish as long as they use quick start or filler boost and it will be ok.. then well we all know what happens..

Heya! So I just wanted to share my experience with fish-in cycling! It's definitely not a beginner friendly type set-up, unless you've got that experience, like you had said, or in my case, I did extensive research before setting up my tanks only a year ago! I had never kept any type of aquariums or even lizards and whatnot, so i had no idea what to do going into this, but it quickly became my little passion project! .
    .
    . For my set-up i used
I used soil substrate with a sand cap, but also, i went to my local river and got a good number of wild Gambusia fish, river leaf litter, some moss that was growing in the water, stones wood and even plants like Salvinia minima, bocopa, hornwort and pennywort! I used Gambusia and ramshorn snails in the initial set-up because of their high tolerance to changes in water chemistry. Silly hardy little fish and snails! 😂 but i had done about a month of research on how to basically kick start an aquatic ecosystem!

My guppies are old now. I compensate about 3 to 5 litre of water due to air evaporation. Never ever empty the tank and change the water. My guppies do not like that at all. We have our own water, so tap water not a problem. Prefer to leave them alone. And they are very healthy. Lots of bright colours.

Great topic Blake!! Haven’t been here for a while cause I had a terrible run with my fish keeping. I had to get rid of my 180lt due to leaks and therefore had to give away my beautiful black belt, then my brazilliensis developed swim bladder problems and after 3 months of trying every treatment possible I had to make she decision to euthanize and then 2 weeks later my JD died. So I have no big beautiful fish left and I felt like such a failure as a fish keeper 😢

Up here in Denmark in the Northern Europe, it’s strictly forbidden by law to add anything to the tap water. That’s meaning that it’s completely safe to rinse your filters in tap waters.
Despite being a very small country there’s geological differencies in where the water is drilled and pumped up from the underground. Some parts are very alcalic and some parts are very acid. Where I lives the water is very soft and slightly acid which means it’s very suitable to gouramis and South American fish. Other places only about 40-50 km from my home are more suitable to African Cichlids.

Chlorine has 2 important variables to be able to kill bacteria: concentration and exposure time.
Concentration in drinking water is only sufficient to prevent bacteria from multiplying.
Exposure time at that low concentration would require hours of contact to kill the beneficial bacteria in the filter media.

You missed the one I would like to see banished forever - you can keep 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. I'm sure that's fine with fish on an inch or so in length but once you have bigger fish the argument is ridiculous. A 2 inch fish is not twice the size of a 1 inch fish. Assuming similar body shape the 2 inch fish is twice as long, twice as wide and twice as deep. It is actually 8 times the size of the 1 inch fish. A 3 inch fish is 27 times the size of the 1 inch fish. 20 neon tetras are fine in a 20 gallon tank but if you follow the 1 inch per gallon rule you should be able to keep 2 10 inch oscars in the same 20 gallon tank instead. Good luck with that.

I have had successful tanks where water changes became rare once established and planted tanks that after a year and a half I didn't need to change the water.
That said the most healthy tanks I've had either plants and animals I always see better results after I do a water change and the fish are usually more active and color up.
I wanted to be one of those people who can say they don't do water changes but now it's such a quick way to keep a stable tank without having to add unnecessary additives and using a small pump and hose and Rubbermaid bucket with wheels it's not the hassle I once made out of it
