    I work as a doctor of physical therapy. Here is why Mike is right: the primary hip flexor is called the iliopsoas, it’s actually two muscles that come together. Part of it attaches onto your lumbar spine, so when your hip flexes up it actually is pulling your back into extension. The abdominals perform the opposite spine action and flexes (rounds) the lumbar spine. The abdominals will be triggered to counteract this pull from the hip flexor. This is why hip flexor activity is a great way to train the abs, because you can get a lot of great abdominal isometric work.

    • @MaxCaliffDPT
      @MaxCaliffDPT Год назад

      Honest discussion point; is hip flexion not associated with posterior tilting innominate i.e. lumbar flexion?
      I also think from a performance standpoint there is something to be said about the requirement for maintaining optimal tension with the upper extremities - mainly the lats, when performing these. I thought that’s what Mike was getting at. This would make it specific to overhead sports, I like using it as an accessory in oly lifting training for this specific reason.

    #1. Prevents a hernia, as many who begin their weight training journey lift heavy (for bragging rights), but then forget lower abdomen integrity is required for heavy sets
    #2. Scientifically proven to be significantly better for your lower back and spine, due to the unproportional pressure applied from the angle of regular sit-ups - so much so, that military boot camps no longer train with sit-ups, but rather do planks, etc.
    I'm glad someone finally called this out, as proper form can actually engage the abs extremely well during leg raises.

    Simple, hanging stretches the core musculature, and bringing the legs up is a significant load placed upon all these muscles as they contract through a large range of motion. The range of motion is great from stretching the muscles to contracting them at the top, the grip strength and spinal decompression are excellent bonuses.

    Hanging Leg Raise Tips
    1. Once in position pull in belly button for fully engage core
    2. lift hip girdle to ribcage- not feet to chest (engages better mind muscle connection
    3. exhale fully on the contraction (squeeze) point
    4. use a tempo of 1 sec up 2 sec down
    5. Do not fully extend legs as this will over engage the hip flexor and burn them out b4 the abs get a good workout

    The way Mike Does them is the best way to get them to work your abs because he is actually flexing and extending his spine against resistance ( gravity)
    Mike is Right
    his hanging leg raises are actually hanging spinal flexion extension which is actually the job of the abdominal muscles😊
    The legs rising and falling is just a necessary byproduct of the hips rotating towards the ribcage.... Since the legs are attached to the hips permanently..... Where else are they going to go when the hips flex up towards the ribcage?

    Leg raises suck if you're doing them right, same with pullups, and even lying leg raises. The abs crunch together, and the obliques allow you to twist. If your back is straight, you're not working anything but the hip flexors. If you're using momentum, there's no tension. You want to keep your body controlled, and try rounding your back upwards instead of just lifting your legs. You can even add a bit of twist for your obliques.

    Its like the upper chest being less developed than the lower. Typically, your upper abs show before your lower. Hanging legs raises are a great way to target them

  • @Jeansoverslacks
    @Jeansoverslacks 2 года назад

    You have to have great upper body strength in order to do them and if you can accomplish them for reps your back and arms are gonna be jacked up for a while. That is an exercise for people who make they’re money off training or kids who have no jobs or responsibilities…not for the rest of us who have to work 8 to 12 hours after we do a work out session

    Guys while I agree with what he’s saying please don’t do them like he’s doing them if your arms are bent it reduces ab recruitment
    Ideally you want to do these with your back being supported so your back doesn’t take over

    They are good for you..when do right… there is suppose to be no swing. No momentum. & lets are supposed to be straight. No bending at the knees.

    The only direct Ab work I ever do is hanging leg raises, very easy to maintain constant tension on the abdominals doing this movement.

  • @jayraymond9707
    @jayraymond9707 Год назад

    I see you’re throwing the hips back in order to get the legs up higher creating a crunch effect. Do you find you get better tension with that more dynamic movement as opposed to the traditional fixed position you see people doing?
    Thanks for the content, Mike. Your knowledge is much appreciated.

    Absolutely great abs exercise...and whats wrong with hitting some hip flexor? They look great when you're ripped...

  • @kanielk9772

    The stretch. The contraction isn't great, but the stretch is what makes it amazing.

      I do not agree. Strict vertical T2B has lot of contraction. but comparing to the Roman Chair of the 70's there is allmost no stretch. So finish with Cobra pose on blocks for your stretch

    What about leg raises when your back is supported? Are those not as good? I feel like I can concentrate on the abs more when I don't have to worry about hanging and stabilizing etc. But is it the engagement of the stabilizer muscles that make this exercise great?

  • @seanthegod4585

    I agree. If you actually engage the abdominal muscles to initiate and complete the movement it will fry those abs.

    Leg raises are a must for the abs

    Leg raises train the hips flexors, the primary function fo the ab rectus is to flex the spine.

  • @kelgbrown007
    @kelgbrown007 2 года назад +2

    They are hip exercise if you dont raise the legs high enough to see the ass. The muscles dont cross the hips, so to work the abs the legs have to go past 90. Think knees to elbows like mike is doing. Boom. Abs crushed

    • @McDanMan84
      @McDanMan84 2 года назад

      Exactly. That’s why most kids don’t have the strength to do so and just move their legs to their hips without any involvement of abs. No one said if you do them properly they’re not working abs lol

    So many reasons.. yeah you're using your hips but you are also doing that if you are doing leg raises off the floor. Hanging leg raises are essentially a compound ab movement.
