I work as a doctor of physical therapy. Here is why Mike is right: the primary hip flexor is called the iliopsoas, it’s actually two muscles that come together. Part of it attaches onto your lumbar spine, so when your hip flexes up it actually is pulling your back into extension. The abdominals perform the opposite spine action and flexes (rounds) the lumbar spine. The abdominals will be triggered to counteract this pull from the hip flexor. This is why hip flexor activity is a great way to train the abs, because you can get a lot of great abdominal isometric work.
Honest discussion point; is hip flexion not associated with posterior tilting innominate i.e. lumbar flexion? I also think from a performance standpoint there is something to be said about the requirement for maintaining optimal tension with the upper extremities - mainly the lats, when performing these. I thought that’s what Mike was getting at. This would make it specific to overhead sports, I like using it as an accessory in oly lifting training for this specific reason.

Simple, hanging stretches the core musculature, and bringing the legs up is a significant load placed upon all these muscles as they contract through a large range of motion. The range of motion is great from stretching the muscles to contracting them at the top, the grip strength and spinal decompression are excellent bonuses.
It's because the abs actually connect the ribs to the hips in the front and side. So doing hip hinge movement will incorporate the abs, and hanging leg raises provide the most resistance in this way. It will fry your abs better than almost anything else ever.

Abs connect to the hips along the front and side. So of course anything that hinges the hips will incorporate abs, and leg raises apply the most resistance in that capacity. So they are one of THE most effective thing you can do for your abs.
Doing them correctly, toe to bar, and not using momentum to avoid the bottom part of the angle like mike, will work more of the upper spinal flexion muscles also.
Hanging Leg Raise Tips 1. Leg raises suck if you're doing them right, same with pullups, and even lying leg raises. The abs crunch together, and the obliques allow you to twist.
