The new Huawei phone is purely a propaganda tactic. You can make 7nm chip using DUV machines, but only with no regard for commercializations. The yield rate of 15% is a joke. That is why it is so hard to order the phone because they don't have enough chips.

Huawei in coming up its own chip, its own platform, its own supply chains for parts is a formidable achievement. This is only the beginning. There is only so much in price increment that Apple can go before people say they just can’t afford it and move to other brands. So there is an invisible price cap and Apple really needs to stand out in its new offerings for people to justify paying the premium for them. Problem is they are at the threshold of that price limit. Huawei and Samsung products are becoming really solid so don’t underestimate Huawei.

Tesla is an example of this, don't know if it's still true but KFC of all things used to be one also. The other part of it is if you have the money you probably also know domestically Chinese products aren't the best.

Except its believed the new chip in Hwawi phone is considerably more expensive than foreign sourced SOC. While at the same time its believed to be at least few generations behind the said foreign (aka Taiwanese) SOC's. Especially in terms of on chip memory which is dominated by US technology and so unavailable to China at the moment.

Their “new” chip isn’t anything special. You could always produce some types of higher level chips on a lower level lithography machine. It just has a much higher production failure rate, takes much longer to produce the numbers needed, and so costs a hell of a lot more to produce, and even then the chips themselves fail more often/sooner for the end user. Like trying to mass produce precision parts for a turbine engine on your home CNC machine. Sure, theoretically you can do it, and flap your arms screaming how you’re as good as Rolls Royce. But with all the time, effort, waste, and failures you’ll be losing money hand over fist even before the first customer order is filled, and even more when many of those orders are returned. But like all things in China, the importance of the initial media Show far outweighs the actual engineering Substance. 🙄

I don't get China's desire for iPhone. I had 2 and they were operational garbage from effing itunes to resets during phone calls. Is everything else so much worse on China that they have settle for iphones?
I thought of this too, sometimes samsung, sometimes oneplus etc are bleeding edge in consumer quality but iphone as status brand keeps on going... same in west too. granted quality is also that brand wont ruin it next year, if no good idea, at least keep it same.

Tesla is an example of this, don't know if it's still true but KFC of all things used to be one also. The other part of it is if you have the money you probably also know domestically Chinese products aren't the best.

This is what I thought, almost uniformly rising economic nations has people with this consumer behaviour.... foreign expensive brand is very desirable due to memory of poverty. Then what happens in china next 20-40 years will be interesting and perhaps more varied. Although india may be more interesting market for market researchers. I have not doubt Tesla enjoys similar reputation as iphone in china, domestic brands likely are "local" quality standards and thus secondary option like huawei. Though they said in europe chinese made tesla is better than manufactured in other place so there must be separate lines for export and domestic market for same exact products. At least this was said of DJI(drones), QA is different despite could be same production lines.
Now if the Hwawi was priced economically and they were truthful about it, I'd understand. However it is priced the same as the new Apple which is totally superior.
Not to mention that Apple phone retain their value better than other phones in the market. Except its believed the new chip in Hwawi phone is considerably more expensive than foreign sourced SOC. While at the same time its believed to be at least few generations behind the said foreign (aka Taiwanese) SOC's. Especially in terms of on chip memory which is dominated by US technology and so unavailable to China at the moment.

Their “new” chip isn’t anything special. You could always produce some types of higher level chips on a lower level lithography machine. It just has a much higher production failure rate, takes much longer to produce the numbers needed, and so costs a hell of a lot more to produce, and even then the chips themselves fail more often/sooner for the end user.
Like trying to mass produce precision parts for a turbine engine on your home CNC machine.
