The story in the "Lit" MV, Lay said, is based on his favorite Chinese historical figure. In the MV he is portraying a Chinese general who has been trapped by the Han soldiers while trying to rescue his wife. The general is a real historical figure named Xiang Yu, who fought in the battle of Gaixia. In the beginning of the MV you hear a Peking opera singer performing “The Song of Gaixia” which is a song that Xiang Yu composed for his wife, Lady Yu, who eventually took her own life. (Fun fact: In Lay's song "Jade" which is a song also on this album, the story is supposed to be about Lady Yu and Xiang Yu's love story.) Everything about this song and MV is a poetic, cinematic masterpiece. For example, the word Lotus in Chinese sounds a little like Lit in English. (Another play on words, just like the Chinese pronunciation of Jade sounds like Yu or you in English, which Lay cleverly used in his song "Jade." Get it? Jade = Yu and Jade = you.) Lay used lotus (Lit) as a metaphor for no matter how hard people try to bring him down, he will stand strong and survive through anything the world throws at him, like a lotus flower. The Lotus often represents purity. The Lotus is special because it grows in the mud, but out of the most dirty and unforgiving conditions, blooms one of the most beautiful flowers. The Lotus is a famous symbol in Chinese culture and it often represents how something good and pure can grow and triumph despite what you would think are unforgiving conditions. Lay has said that the idea for "Lit" comes from the fact that his haters have been calling him "White Lotus," which refers to someone who acts innocent, and uses it for his gain and plays the victim all the time. So when he wrote the song he took that negativity and embraced it and turned it into something positive. So, in other words, he is saying: "You thought you could bring me down, but you are wrong. I am not a fake white lotus, but I am a true lotus who is LIT. I am more powerful than you know and I will rise above all your negativity and show you how I grow even stronger and more beautiful no matter how much mud and dirt I have to go through," etc. The dragon is a very powerful symbol in Chinese culture and it is even said that if you are Chinese you are a descendant of the dragon. Chinese dragons traditionally symbolize vitality, strength and good luck. In one interview I read, Lay also talked about how he has two dragons inside him -- a good dragon and a bad dragon. He said he always chooses to listen to the good dragon. The good dragon is the one who is protecting him and helping him through all his hardships and difficult times. So the main theme of "Lit" is about fighting his inner self and learning to ignore and overcome the people who are trying to knock him down. Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the Chinese member of the super famous Kpop boy group EXO. He is one of the main dancers and a lead singer of the group. EXO debuted in 2012, so he has been around for more than 8 years. And, as you can see, he is also a very famous solo artist and dancer in China and internationally. He has been given the title as China's national producer and youth ambassador by the Chinese government. He is one of the most well respected singers and dancers in China. He also has a couple of all English albums. His English albums were part of his foyer into U.S. music industry starting in 2018. As you have discovered, Lay is is a singer, rapper, songwriter, composer, producer actor, director, editor, dancer, designer, etc. -- genius -- and with every new release of his, he just one ups himself. And "Lit" is a prime example of that. If you study the credits, you see that this MV was produced by Zhangyixing Studios, which is named after Lay -- he owns the studio. So, the credits show, Lay has his hand in almost every aspect of this production. It's his name you will see dozens of times in the credits. He is the one that wrote and composed the song, he even produced the beat himself. He is his own beat-maker. He is also executive producer, he came up with the storyline, he helped choreograph and he helped direct the MV, etc. But that's normal for Lay's solo work With Lay, when you ask who did it? -- for any part of the song, MV or choreography -- you are pretty much guaranteed that the answer is: Lay. He does it all. He is such a perfectionist that there is almost nothing that he is involved in that he doesn't have 100% control of himself. He prides himself in the fact that all aspects of his music are created by him. This MV took more than 6 months to make and more than $1.2 million to produce. And it was all done by Lay. They actually filmed at one of the largest and most well known film studios in China. What you saw was the real temple. No Screenshots. The dragon was CGI, but the rest of the set is all real. You should really check out the making of film ruclips.net/video/x_K39ntCEXw/видео.html and Lay's "dance practice"/choreography video for "Lit." ruclips.net/video/9Yefy6iw0As/видео.html to really see how things were made.
No this is not just a music video. It's a movie and a work of art. Lay is a multi-talented genius. You should react to his MV Honey so you can see his incredible dance skills.
Actually Lay paid for the MV from his own pocket as he always do with his solo work. Namanana MV spent a similar amount of money, 1.4 million, which was said the entire profit he received from his 2nd album Sheep
The first time i watched Lit the mv was the one that made me continue bec the song is not easg to listen to. But on the second time i appreciated the music a lot more because of his powerful delivery. Lay is really a genius. I also love Jade, Honey Namamanana and Sheep.
I agree with what you said about the song and short film (because that's what it was). The song doesn't really stand strong without it. Even when I listened to it on Spotify, I felt like there's a story being told and it needed visuals to come alive. Glad you enjoyed the video. To me, it's top three of 2020.
Yixing(Lay) is a genius. He is amazingly hardworking and wants to please his fans so very much. We are so proud of all his hard work and are always looking forward to what he’s going to do next! He just started his own idol project a little bit ago and people lined up for so long to audition because he is such a huge influence and will make a fantastic teacher and mentor.
Yeah he’s one of the EXO aces! King of China. You should react to his collaboration with his juniors NCT127 and Jason Derulo in Shut Up and Dance music video. Ps: the dance practice of this music video is also LIT. Your reaction made me laugh so hard at the beginning when Lay turned and all those men were behind him lmoa
This song is really good, and the music video enhances it a lot. My favorite song on the album is "H2O" (水). I also like "Jade" (玉). Lotus is an incredible album.
lay is the king of chine , and this is juste one of his masterpiece . i tell you that you should see the others and you will never regret honey , namanana , lose controle , sheep , give me a chance .......
in case you havent heard yet: this video cost 1.5mil USD to made and the artist paid for it out of his own pocket to assure his artistic direction could be fully met. the video was produced by hengdian world studios, the largest film studio in the world, which is why it looks so cinematic. the video features a fierce representation of lay's chinese identity through the music and visuals. the full album, this song included, feature the peking opera (the most prolific form of chinese opera dating to the mid-qing dynasty) and the use of the instrument zither (used in china as long ago as 433 bc) which you correctly identified as the instrument from kung fu hustle.
This is next level art. It really carries the sense of Chinese history and culture in every image. I am not a fan of Lay or EXO, but this is masterfully done. Beautiful.
Although "Lit" is the title track, I agree that it's not a song people would listen to...but the others songs on the album are. "Jade" and "H20" are nothing like "Lit", and I am in love with them. Traditional chinese instruments are introduced in the music on this album, Lay (an Exo member, only Chinese member), Lay is respecting his roots and doing his best to bring China pop to the world...but if you love r&b, "H20" would be a great song to hear. Do you have IG? If you do I will send these lyric videos to you, enjoy them for yourself, no reaction needed.😁💙🌺
The music video should be good, boi really spent 1.4 million dollars on the music video and it took months just to film it. He is saying "lian" which sound similar to lit but it means lotus flower. There are really two ways you could interpret this: 1)a lotus flower grows from mud but when it blooms it is a beautiful white flower, so he basically compares himself to a lotus in that he kinda came from nothing but became the huge star he is today (diamond in the rough) 2) it could have something to do with the fact that Lay's haters call him "the white lotus" which is a Chinese insult meaning you look innocent on the outside but you are ugly on the inside so basically "fake" so the song could be him comparing his insult to the english word "lit" kinda saying "f*ck the haters"
This is certainly a marvellous mv. As you say you react to all sorts of music, can you react to the Mongolian band The Hu. Their song "Yuve Yuve Yu" please. You will see them playing wonderful traditional instruments.
Lay is the king of Chinese music. He's the writer, producer and musician of all his albums.
