Hey Justin, an efficient pendulum swings forward and backwards whilst the earth turns under it, hence it can be used to tell the time. Friction always defeats it, so it will be reset every so often!
My wife and I visited Paris last year. It's the only place in the world that I have ever gotten lost. The streets and the buildings all look the same, but that's what is cool about it. I just started watching this channel.. I like it. Awesome vlog!
Gargoyles are waterspouts... you can remember, because it's where we get our verb "to gargle". Flying buttresses disperse the weight of the building into the ground instead of the walls, making it possible to build something at the time that large.
Foucault's Pendulum. It moves around in a (semi-) circle (sometimes knocking little pegs over if they set it up that way) as the Earth rotates under the pendulum. There's one at Griffith Observatory, too.
You saw a Foucault pendulum it demonstrates the rotation of the earth and knocks over the pegs on the hour as the earth turns Emile Zola is an author and a contemporary of Hugo and Dumas As always another great vid - so nice to see Ally back to her wonderful self
To my understanding, the gargoyles were meant to scare people so that they wouldn't look up, as only "holy" people could look up to the heavens. Thanks Justin and Ally for showing us such awesome places.
Justin, seeing you and Ally at Notre Dame was delightful enough but it totally made my day when you stopped in front of the Tintin shop! (I am one of those rare American Tintin fans. If you think he's a huge deal in France, he's practically a national hero in Belgium!)Thank you for taking us to Paris with you in your pocket.
The architecture in France is amazing!!!! It's a shame you couldn't zoom in closer. But considering I'll never get to France in my lifetime I am grateful to you and your videos for a chance to see some of it.
21:21 - Justin, that ginormous pendulum is a Focault ("Foo-KOH") pendulum, which demonstrates how the earth is rotating 'under' the pendulum's swing, and can therefore be used as a clock. I believe that there's a smaller version at the Griffith Park Planetarium. OUTSTANDING Vlog, Justin & Aly! EDIT: As pointed out by Joseph Davies, the Focault pendulum you observed is the original, the very first, the main one. Thank you, Joseph!
normally the weight of the peaked roof would tend to push the tops of the walls outward. The flying buttresses lean against the tops of the walls and hold them in, reducing the amount of stone required, and making it possible to span the large windows.
In architecture, a chimera or grotesque is a fantastic or mythical figure used for decorative purposes. Chimerae are often described as gargoyles, although the term gargoyle technically refers to figures carved specifically as terminations to spouts which convey water away from the sides of buildings. In the Middle Ages, the term babewyn was used to refer to both gargoyles and chimerae
I'm new to your channel. (I joined with a recent Disney World one). Wow! What an amazing channel. I subscribed just in time. These few videos on Paris are spectacular! Thank you. Awesome job!
The plaque is talking about Dante, the author of The Divine Comedy. His family was part of a rivalry between two noble Florentine families, and he was born into his family at a time when they had no money. They wanted to send him away to be woodcutter, but he refused. Eventually, all the property was confiscated, and his home burned. Until his death in 1321, the poet wandered and devoted himself to writing his great work. The street [presumably the one the plaque is on] takes its name from the hay boots (bales?) used by the students. That's all I could see -- couldn't see the very bottom.
Through the whole bit of Notre Dame I was trying to figure out what part of the building was part of the background for the animated movie. Safe travels!
I love how by now I pretty much know all your famous catchphrases and so every time you say them in your video I chime in and say them as well in my best Justin Scarred impression. "WOULD YOU LOOK AT THE SHIZE OF THAT GARRRRGANTUAN ARRCH!!!!" xD
Prof. Justin is at it again. Teaching us stuff we thought we didn't want or need to know, but made it entertaining. How dare you Justin! When can we send you to China? :D
"There's nothing wrong with not knowing." That's true. Justin's videos are pure fun. If I wanted an analysis of historical evidence, I'd be watching Dr. Lucy Worsley. Of course, she's fun too sometimes. Don't overthink it.
If I'm not mistaken, Tintin is the first comic book to be originally published in french, despite being from Belgium. Maybe that's why the French like him so much.
If you ever have the chance, you should visit the Paris Opera House and its catacombs. It's rumoured that the Phantom of the Opera is still haunting the place.
Just looked it up as you got me fascinated. So gargoyles spout the water out. Just read they derive from the French word gargouilles meaning throat :) Grotesques are the decorative heads. Another awesome vid Justin. Would love you to bring your adventures down under to the glorious land of Aus one day 😎
how did your phone work in paris? Or did your get one for local use? I am getting an S8 but I have been told that it would not work in Europe except for WiFi.
31:24 The spikes are pointing inwards in case of a zombie apocalypse. The French want to protect the public just in case Hugo, Dumas and Zola convert to zombie-ism and try to get out.
maaan ya the wind has been KILLER this week it's like chicago almost... y'all shouldve stopped by 3 weeks ago.. it was literally 75 degrees (almost hot) xD
Oh man I remember I drank SO MUCH WATER all day (we walked everywhere so I was hydrating!) and me and my BF were on the Champs Elysee and I was about to pee my pants in the cold dark night and none of the shops had public restrooms BUT LUCKILY I knew enough french to get the movie theater to let me use the bathroom. They saved my life. Also apparently a lot of Parisians love those McBaguettes. My BF got food poisoning and the next day he ate four and apparently they're way better than American McDonalds.
Justin as long as you are in France this is what I want to see... Do your vlog in black and white. Speak French through the entire vlog and don't forget the subtitles. Have Edith Piaf singing lightly in the background.
too late to say but you really mist some stuff that was more your typical style. Shakespeare and company, Montmartre, Luxemburg gardens, Rodin museum, the Pompidou center...anywhere in the 8th..the le Montana nightclub you would have loved! maybe for next time. :)
If you liked it, please share with a friend you think would like it. :) 💖🇫🇷🇺🇸
You should go to Mexico and visit the Pyramids.
JustinScarred Loved it!!!! Enjoy yourselves
Great video! I'm ready to book my trip. (If I could only afford it). At least I can live vicariously through your travels!
JustinScarred Tin Tin and Asterix are famous all over Europe. Lol. I lived in Germany for 8 years and saw them all over.

Thanks for the mini history and author lesson. I love Count of Monte Cristo and didn't know it was written by Alexander Dumas. So cool!
Oh the Awesomeness of these French videos!!! Love love how you use Ally as a measurement!
Justin it is the other way. Gargoyles spit out water and grotesque don't spit out water. Here is a helpful way to remember a gargling gargoyles.
A nice short 40min video. Thanks for the video's I hope you make them all this short.

Foucault's Pendulum. It moves around in a (semi-) circle (sometimes knocking little pegs over if they set it up that way) as the Earth rotates under the pendulum. There's one at Griffith Observatory, too.

It would seem that this pendulum is, in fact, _the_ Foucault Pendulum: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foucault_pendulum

All of that Tintin merchandise looks like heaven!!! And oui, Justin, Tintin is insanely popular in France and Belgium still. :)
The big pendulum is actually meant to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth! It's not a clock. Super cool!!
I enjoy each and every one of your vlogs. Honestly! Really... I DO!
The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Rollerblading, NOFX covers... only late 90s kids will remember

Thx! Lots of fun and informative.
Bonjour Justin and Ally!
Get some of that French cheese.
Emile Zola is another popular french novelist from the 1800s for anyone wondering. I dont recognize any of his work at least what I read of it.
If you ever have the chance, you should visit the Paris Opera House and its catacombs. It's rumoured that the Phantom of the Opera is still haunting the place.
Justin...you are so smart! You should have been a history scholar! You guys enjoy that gorgeous room your last night!

No offense to Adam the Woo but I think Justin is my new favorite vlogger, is this considered a vlog or I guess travel vids? It's awesome either way
Best vlog ever
Justin, 40 minutes is not short. 10 mins is short. LOL
I never realized how much Cinderella Castle at MK was so obviously influenced by French architecture!
I share and tweet about every day. Really cool stuff
Good vlog Justin keep it up
19:59 "Doc, I think Paris may have taken our clocktower"
That title pulled me in Justin !
What is the name of the hotel?
maaan ya the wind has been KILLER this week it's like chicago almost... y'all shouldve stopped by 3 weeks ago.. it was literally 75 degrees (almost hot) xD
are you coming to the UK
Jim Morrison of the Doors is also buried in Paris.
LOVED IT!!
When in France, did you video Jim Morrison's grave (singer for the Door's)? If you didn't, you missed out; as a lot of people would watch that video.
Which hotel did u stay in? Nice!
Love it!

Have you ever thought about doing a "how to plan your trip to France" video? Seems like you've get it down pat!
I hope Ally is feeling much better and isn't in anymore pain.
I am adamant to keep this video short! (40 mins, longest Paris video of the trip!!!) 😂😂
Omg I love Tintin 😱😱😱
