  • SSH access is needed to take full control of your Home Assistant server. With SSH access you can execute bash script command on your Home Assistant server from your Windows or Linux PC or Mac. It makes it possible to install HACS and other custom integrations.
    This addon can be installed using supervisor. HACS is not needed to install this add-on. Make sure you have Advanced mode enabled in your profile!

    Thank you for this video. I did have SSH installed but it was the 'official' one with the web terminal. I much prefer the one you installed so can access it via my bash terminal. However, I find with the Raspberry Pi image install that the majority of changes I have tried to make, in the past, are volatile. Once the Pi reboots they are no longer there For example I have installed crontab -e changes and they had disappeared.

    Why SSH & Web Terminal as opposed to Terminal & SSH? The security rating of the one you recommended is "1" (lowest) vs the "official" add-on version which they give a "6" security rating (highest).

    • @SmartHomeJunkie
      @SmartHomeJunkie  3 года назад

      Well, it works and the security rating is probably because of the fact that you can set the security very low. It is however developed by one of the core developers of Home Assistant.

    Thanks for this video. This is a really newbie question but why do some people's Home Assistant web browsers include "Supervisor" in the sidebar and others do not? I have Home Assistant installed on an Intel Mac via VMware Fusion (.vmdk install) and I don't have have the Supervisor sidebar link. As well, I can only see the official Terminal and SSH add-on which doesn't seem as robust as yours. My understanding is that the .vmdk version of Home Assistant has the same features as the Raspberry pi version but is that true? I'm getting some errors and want to dive deeper into the logs and config files. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

      Normally when you get an error like that, it means that either the plugin is not ready loading or that there is an error. Your log file does not give an error, so it should be a matter of waiting. If not, I am not sure what happens on your side 🤷🏼

    I don't get it. In every video I find on this, the HA is totally different than mine. There is no Supervisor tab anymore. Searching addons considers only the official one. There is now HACS, but even in HACS, I don't see the SSH you have. Can you enable remote SSH using the official? I cannot find any settings to modify for that addon. I found another video; their setup had various options to change; mine doesn't, even with advanced options enabled. Why is it so hard to get SSH enabled on this? Sigh. Thanks for the video; even though it didn't help me, I appreciate the effort; off I go to hope II can find one that shows something similar to my settings in HA 2022.4.1

      @@SmartHomeJunkie Hey Ed, at 1:25 after searching for the add-on you selected the "SSH & Web Terminal" from the "Home Assistant Community Add-Ons" section (HACS?). There is another add-on in the "Official add-ons" section above called "Terminal & SSH". I believe this is the one that others here have been having issues with because I ran into the same problem.
      It looks to me like the "Terminal & SSH" (from Official section) doesn't allow you to add a username in the Configuration, and defaults to using the user from your client PC. I can see in the "Terminal & SSH" logs that I get an "Invalid user from port " error. Since I can't specify a username within this add-on's Configuration, I'm unable to progress.
      This looks like a bug in the "Official add-on", so the "Home Assistant Community Add-on" looks like the way to go, which most folks seem to have figured out already. Maybe this can provide some clarity though so others don't waste time trying to use the wrong add-on like I did :)

    • @SmartHomeJunkie
      @SmartHomeJunkie  3 года назад

      Yes, I use this one since the beginning and it works great. It's not from HACS by the way. HACS is a different "store".
