Martin Logan Aerius I
Sonus Faber Concerto Grand Piano

Happy listening!
#martinlogan #sonusfaber #magnepan
I wish more people post comparisons such as these, rather than talk and preach. The speakers speak for themselves. Great job!
Agree totally.
@@pcbartolomeu How can you tell when the speakers you have at home is different from these?
me to but not a lot of people have the cash to buy 3 o more pairs of hi end speakers
instaBlaster
@@mrt6349 ye it bugs me how people look at video like this which are influenced both by microphone quality and their own output quality which mean it's completly meaningless.
Martin Logan just sounds so rich and full. The sound stage that they produce is truly breath taking.
Best looking of the 3 too.
the snare drums don't sound right with them. None of the air and dryness gets out, and the snare "room sound" isn't there compared to the other two. Also, the Martin Logans have very realistic vocals, much better than the other two. The Sonus Faber sound like very nice speakers, but the other two sound more live altogether. The Magnepans do have a speaker sound, coloration, but it's very pleasant.
@@ologylabs2374 I agree with everything you’ve listed above. I must say though. After listening to these in person next to a Bowers and Wilkins system nothing sounds quite like the diamond series from Bowers and Wilkins!
So the same songs straight from a CD player to your headphones or speakers are not truly breath taking?
I have never heard any of these speakers in real life, but to me in this video it's clearly:
Martin Logan > Sonus Faber > Magnepan.
That last one probably really needs one or two subs to support it, but even then still it sounds as flat as its building dimensions are.
Incredible, three speakers with completely different sound, but at the same time beautiful, each in their own way. I am stunned. I love them all. PS: the quality of your recording is astounding. Your musical choice too.
buy them all
Couldn't agree more.
By far, the best speaker comparison video on youtube. If this channel would have continued like this, it could have been BIG! 10+ hands down!
Amazing video, thanks for your time and efforts put into creating this seamless comparison. I thought the Martin Logan had the most detail and transparency of the three with enough bass. The Sonus sound was thin and lacked definition to my ears. The Maggies were second best, had lots of air but the bass was thin and the mids were little muffled as others commented. Of course you have to be there in person to really evaluate the speaker sounds. Thanks again and I look forward to your future videos.
I love the big, open sound of the Maggies, especially the non-restrictive lower registers:) I wouldn’t be averse to using a little eq if I felt the need to:)
Good job of level matching and synchronization. Listening with Sennheiser HD800S, the differences are striking. I suspect that if the Magnepans were set up properly that I would choose them based on this video.
What a fantastic way to compare speakers! Very well done video!
Incredible comparison thank you so much
Great video! Awesome to see such a terrific comparison.
One of if not the best side by side.
Been curious about Mags vs some Logans. TY
Fantastic comparison. Really appreciate the ML.
What an awesome way to compare speakers! Well done!
All are great! I think the most dynamic are the sonus fiber by my ear, I love the magnepans cus of the direct sound. The Logans, I think have to heavy base and swollows the other frequiencies. Thanks for showing me these three marvels!
This is by far the best comparison video I’ve ever seen, and the effort involved to produce the final seamless version must have been considerable.
Draw your own conclusions about which sound you prefer, but for what it’s worth, I’ve used MLs for years, but have changed to Maggies. What this video can’t convey is the height and depth of the soundstage Maggies produce. Also, MLs are every bit as tricky to place to get sounding right as the Maggies, and have a much smaller listening sweet spot.
No negative comments please, I’m only trying to help!
This was a lot of fun, I listened with my Infinity Gammas and I rate them this way, Sonus-last, Magnepan-second and the Martin Logan the clear winner. Also appreciate the way you did this, no BS and let the sound do the talking.
Thanks ! This is very helpful !
"Very nice" comparo. Thanks for your seamless transitions and the huge amount of effort that went into this. Having owned the ML Sequel 2's for many years when first introduced I have a sweet spot for them and in this comparo they rise to the top followed by the Maggies then Sonus in my op. Good choice in music to highlight as well !
Fantastic comparison. Well done. Thank you for your effort.
I have both of these speakers.....Maggies and ML's......This was a spot on demo of thier characteristics......great work.
Excellent job! Ingenious!
Had both maggies and MLs in my living room. Maggies require distance from sidewalls and have a very narrow sweet spot. When ideally placed they produce a massive soundstage...as long as your head is in a vice. MLs have a more conventional soundstage and need less room, but they are more revealing and detailed. Ive found a significant difference in sonic quality between the entry level LRS and higher end maggies.
Brilliant. Love your technique.
Not gonna talk about which is best. I know the acoustic differences are also due to different positions /environments but I think this i the best video presentation I have seen/listen to. This type of experiments is something that takes time and effort. Thank You.
Such a JOY....Thank you. (I miss my MLs so much....)
Very nice to compare Magnepan's to Martin Logan's ! I love both. I have a small preference to Magnepan when paired with adequate sub and amps. (I run a pair of W4S SX-1000R) The most pleasurable speakers I have listened to.
That's basically what the Martin Logans are out of the box.
nice best ever review about soundstage
Thank you! This was a great video
Subscribed because of this video. Please Keep it Up with the AB. excellent!!!
Will do, stay tuned!
Probably the best comparison I have heard on RUclips, pretty effective considering it is coming through low end computer speakers with all sorts of degradation. Oh by the way the Logans win by a margin
The Logans sound the most realistic in replication of voice.
Yes I agree with you Martin logans
If Martin Logan is the best, there's some trouble. I listened to Martin Logan in person and they are nothing near as good as definitive technology.
ML voice sounds to forward and overall lacking in ambience details
Logans for the win! Much more realistic sound and fuller bass than the Maggies. SF not so good...sounds tiny and not a realistic representation.
@@jasonlsimmons the maggies has no subwoofer integrated. so the bass is not so strong ;) and the maggies hase more soundstage.
great comparison. thx
Best on line demo. Well done.
Good job! Would be interesting to hear the latest Magnepan 30.7's in this test.
I don't know much about these speakers. But I loved the tonality of the Martin Logans; the voices, instruments and dynamic's sound amazing. Although they might have a boost in the mid range. The Magnepans sound like they have a boost in the high range. The Sonus sound the most neutral, but also the most boring. Thank you for your effort!
maggies are more neutral, the Sonus is more shrill. the ml's have built in subs, just add rel's to the maggies and you are on a whole different level
Magnepan has the most neutral open sound; 2nd is Martin Logan but its vocals sound a little "muffled" compared to the Magnepans. Sonus Faber rank 3rd IMO, having a more uptrending tonal balance (which upon first listen can be appealing but wears over time). Well done demo!
Agreed. I think the bass is possibly the most tuneful on the Martin Logan’s. Vocals were more muffled for sure but also a bit more focused at the same time. Snare sounded a little choked and buried on the ML too
More better detail in The voice with Martin Logan's that means more neutral or get better headphones to listen to
Listening this via YT with my 2.7's 100% fully agreed ;)
The Martin Logans had the most natural sound, best body and vocal reproduction of the music. Deeper tighter bass.
They no longer sound muffled in any way, on the contrary, they sound more correct and, above all, with a more correct body.
Excellent video!
Great comparison video ... I was surprised at the results, I actually preferred the Martin Logans! Thanks again.
Great Demo. Nice Job!
Have been interested in Martin Logan for some time and pulled the trigger and bought the entry level ESLs in part due to this comparison. I listened to this comparison using Sony MDR 7506 headphones. My MLs sound remarkably like this recording. To my ears, the MLs sounds like the original recordings. The other two sound like recordings of speakers in a room. I do agree the Mags have a more open airy sound on this recording, but the MLs just sound like the performers are there up close. To my ears, the Sonus just sound like average speakers. I guess everyone has their own taste. Thanks for making this recording - it is very well done.
Close between the MLs and the Maggies. The Sonus aren't in the same league.
This is easily the best comparison video I've ever seen/heard.
incredible !love Logan and Sonus!
This is a bad setup for the Maggies. They need to be be toed in and pulled out from the wall. You are cancelling the dipole sound out.
Thanks for you comment Dale, the setup for the Maggies is exactly how the manual suggest to place them, closer to the back wall to gain bottom end (which we needed for matching low end with the other speakers). Please go to page 4 if you want to check by yourself. www.integracoustics.com/MUG/MUG/pix/bullwinkle/
@@HiFiers I agree with Dale. Yes, the manual states that bass can be increased by closer wall placement, but also says to start by having them 3 ft. out from the wall, and move them forward or backward, to taste, which isn't the case here. They're too close to the wall. I've owned 5 models of Maggies. No chance for decent front-to-back-depth revelation, without pulling speakers well out into the room, if possible. A much bigger, deeper room would be ideal for a test like this, which, I realize, is easier said, than done.. Overall, though, this was an impressive test, with the Aerius pair coming out ahead, for me.
@@histubeness I don't have anything of value to add, but wanted to say how much I appreciate a disagreement about the technical setup without any needless drama.
Interesting listening to them in succession. Magnepan has more open sound. Martin Logan's have a more controlled sound. Sonus Faber sound like a small box radio compared to the others.
I'd go with Magnepan's paired with subs and use crossovers with an EQ to balance highs/mids with Magnepan and lows with subs.
Great video and thanks for sharing!
Great job , let the speaker talk of their sound character, event this is very time consuming for preparation and production , yet effective and objective , thanks to assist me to decide to buy ML
That was the idea Bambang, glad to read this. Happy listening!
Would love to hear some Dyns Evidence Platinum though next to the Martin Logans, as their form factor is quite tall as well and they’re mind boggling quality speakers.
Excellent job!
This is absolutely the best speaker comparison I've heard on RUclips ever! While one will never really get a true sense of realism unless in front of the speakers, subjectively this made the best comparison in terms of difference of sound presentation.1. Sonus Faber is way to bright for my liking but huge soundstage. 2. Martin Logans lacked the size of soundstage compared to Sonus, but the midrange was quite warm, but surprisingly lacked a little at the top. 3. Magnepans were the surprise here. Lacked a little warmth and bass, but the soundstage was big. Overall the most balanced sound of the three to my ears, considering all the RUclips compression and basic laptop soundcard bluetooth earphones etc. If anything I now know the difference in sound presentation between Martin Logan and Magnepan, which I've been curious about. Great comparison, thank you!
Great side by side by side. I have had ML's for over 30 years. To my ears they won hands down. Who was the swing band
towards the end ?
Martin Logans: Nasal, under a blanket. Sonus Faber: Bright(!) forward. Magnepan: Neutral, majestic- oh man imagine how much better the 3.6 or 3.7i would sound here are you kidding me it's not even a contest.
I prefer the sound of the electrostats, but have always had a thing about them since I was young. They are on my bucket list.
Best comparison EVER !
Best ever comparison I've experienced 👍
Thank you for taking the time to do the comparison, looking at the sonus faber or Polk R700 right now. Have you had a chance to hear the Polks yet ?
OMG! Perhaps the best comparison I´ve experienced on YT! Thank you for all your great effort you put into this video - very technical correct! It was very very fun and interesting to listen and compare these speakers. I want more of this!!! I cannot decide which is best - Maggie or ML? It comes down what kind of music you are listening to.
My 5 cents about these contenders.
Maggie+ Live, natural sound, large sound stage, airy, you do not miss a note! Maggie-: Little thin on mid bass. I thought this was without a sub!
ML+ Thick/full sound, natural voice/choir, great low extension with slam/dynamics, airy and quite natural. ML- Not much... Not as open sounding as Maggie & less live with smaller sound stage, but overall a great performer.
SF+ ??? SF- Must have better room acoustics (little harsh). Where did midrange and bass notes went?
ML does really really well in this competition and is the over all winner as it sound descent on all tracks, but Maggie on second song. A tough one!
It is easy to hear that dynamic speakers that SF need a room with better room acoustics as they sound hollow and harsh. Electrostats or ribbon design does not spread sound half as much and becomes much easier to tame in normal rooms, IMO. You must pay attention to front wall distance (bass performance), toe in and perhaps add some bass traps and tame the back wave with soft or diffusion materials then you are good to go :) Regards
The Maggie's are set up completely wrong. You arent getting a decent showing at all.
@Baba Ganush thanks for the explanation 👍
This is how all hifi comparisons should be done👍🏻 Thank you for your effort🙏🏻
This is a valuable service
The Logans are kind of cloudy somehow, if you like a crystal clear imaging and sound stage, then magnepan + sub (with crossover on Magne cut off @ 80Hz below)
Cool video. Pretty accurate to live experience with the ML's and the Magnepans. The ML's voice reproduction is more pronounced but has that muffled-ness, as if the mylar is too tight. The Magnepan's visceral affect, the ability to disappear, doesn't show in the video. Cool video of these speakers.
I use to own 1.7i some sounds will be stuck on the panel. Maggie with right equipment most airy treble tho 😊
So your headphones are pretty accurate to live experience?
Love this kind of comparison. Hard to really tell which is better without being there but based on the sound I’m hearing through RUclips here is the order according to my ear: 1) Sonus faber 2) martin logan 3) magnepan.
Great video! Nice to see the back-to-back comparisons. This allows immediate relative comparisons of each speaker, and that can provide a lot of information even if the audio on the other end is not perfect, like those Sonus Fabers being bright and off. Looking at the measurements shows them to have very poor directivity as well. That said, I think this is pretty far down the line, and potentially a very dated design as well. That said they all have their various sins, like the Martin Logans having a bit too much bass, and, from the measurements, a lot of odd uncontrolled resonances like a planar headphone out top.
very cool approach - might not be fair but I'd prefer to hear the Maggies without the subwoofer just for the sake of this comparison and the hollowness I'm hearing in them makes me think they're not set up optimally - - - regardless, striking to hear the Sonus Faber's against two different panel designs, certainly they sound tilted up and one's attention is abruptly brought to the tweeters, they lack coherency - in this comparison, and although I really like the "honesty" of the Magnepans (no coloration in the vocals) like many of the other commenter's, I'd have to go with the Martin Logans even though, albeit it pleasant, they express some upper end coloration. Thanks for posting this, I was not aware of your channel - I'm going to subscribe, I would love to hear more comparisons utilizing your approach - excellent.
Firstly, thank you for doing this. I know listening to your speakers on youtube is no correct representation. But I am amazed as the differences in sound stages and the accuracy is aptly clear. However can I please request you do a similar test with some electronic music. Eg. Doin' it Right by Daft Punk or Vitamin by Kraftwerk. While its easier to distinquish speakers on vocal music or jazz, since I particularly listen to a lot of electronica, i am very keen on how the Magnepan and Martin Logan do as I am familiar with Sonus Faber's sound as I used to own them and loved them.
I own both Martin Logan Aeon i (front speakers) and Maggie MMG (rear speakers). Outlaw Audio sub, I guess for movies and Blueray Audio, this set up is quite wonderful in my downsizing years.
I had aeon i's....one of my favorites...was killer with an old McIntosh amp
Internet needs more videos like this
Through my Magnepan 1.6's backed by a pair of 12" subs, your Martin Logans sound the best.
I love them all through my Sonus Faber Sonetto 3’s
hearing wood in that first song snare stab is unreal on magnepan. I will test that song on my system tomorrow to compare :)
I would try everything again with 2/3 of the floor covered in medium carpet, but that's just me.
I would chopse logans because they don't seem fatigueing in this setup.
thanx for vid
Well done video, thanks.
All three are very good speakers. Magnepan winner.
SF with that usual treble boost, ML with that boosted midrange and rolled off highs (which gives it a very natural sound) and the Magnepans sounding more balanced than both although can be honky and thin sounding at times.
Love the sound of the Martin Logan in the video.
The Sonus Faber sounds shrieky, but this immediately sounded to me like it's a problem because of a lack of a rug on the ground.
Excellent thanks
No kidding The sound is wonderful keep up the great work
I've owned lots of maggies and logans. Dial in the placement of the magnepans and tinker with the tweeters on the outside if not already and try again. A properly placed pair of 1.6's will walk all over those 2.7s in the mids and highs but you can still tweak your magnepans to sound way better, bringing them into Logan territory
No way I have the 2.7 and they are a 3way design and the best magnepans they ever made for the money especially when u have to spend 12000 plus to beat the sound of the 2.7 and at 2000 they were a steal and can’t be beat and a more open sound of these 3 speakers and the Martin Logan’s definitely come in third and the sonus fader is too tinney and I have a svs sub with mine with Peachtree 300 putting out 450 watts no box speakers can match them also u must have carpet in the room and insulated walls and no 20 foot ceilings becauseu will have echo but if u want box speakers look for jse. Model 2 they had the best crossover ever designed for any speakers
Have ML ESL 15s love the sound wonder how Aurius conspire to ML ESL 15a ?
Amazing speakers, all of them. Why no acoustic treatment of the room though?
I was surprised how thin the Maggies sounded. Like previous people said, the Martin Logans sounds full and pleasing.
martin logans have built in subwoofer, maggies sound better in person, and add bass panels or rel subs and you are in heaven
Considering how much room is available, no effort was put into setting the Magnapans up correctly.
@@jon4715 ML do not have SUB woofers in them. just regular woofers.
Is the listening environment shown the actual room the recording was made? If so, I have two comments, since the both Martin Logans and Magnepans require back reflection for accurate sound distribution should they be set up with a window behind them? And, Should the Martin's be played with the Magnepans behind them if you want to compare their sound differences (I own a pair of MLs and these sound a little muted in Mids and highs)? I have so many more questions like are you playing the Magnepans with their external bass unit? Why did you compare and contrast Magnepans and MLs with the Sonos Faber? and so on... Thank you
For me the Martin Logan sound great !
WFT is wrong with those Sonus Faber, they sound terrible. the ML sounds great IMO
This is a baffle sound )) 1-0.5% THD vs 0.05% THD is noticeable once you hear a properly designed open baffle loudspeaker. For me, glued paper boxes do not exist any more.
Honestly such extreme low distortions only planar systems can provide, but you can even take a traditional driver, remove a cage, and will get that free sound. Check out Infinity or NX-Otica
The problem is that customers are not ready to see loudspeakers from a back side.
Nice video. Some in-person commentary would be insightful.
Trying to be neutral here, hence this comparison. Although I can tell you that 90% of this comments are in the aligned with my thoughts being there. Thanks
I've listened to this video several times. The Sonus Faber are clear my favourites. Depth and soundstage and of course my musical ear. The other two sound light.
Spot on. Was hoping to finally find this comment. Been puzzled by most comments ignoring the SF and gushing over the dull and constricted sounding ML. With the SF the speakers disappear and the room becomes the "soundstage". Also that *is* what a snare and hi hat sound like. The other two are what recordings of a snare and hi hat sound like.
I am no expert but I do feel that the Martin Logan produces a more open sound, richer too. If I had to choose, I’d probably for for Martin Logan although Magnepan is breathtaking too, especially on vocals : vocal presence is just unbelievable.
Thanks for this comparison, I wish there were more of these on RUclips.
from what I can tell on crappy phone speakers, the mic in room is telling me the ML sound slightly more airy than either, and I'd dare say more transparent also. Haven't listened to any of these models, but it certainly is interesting getting a small glimpse of each model's sound character
The Martin Logan makes the other sounds muffled.
see, you have to interpret the sound through the mic and your speakers
thank you
i could live with all of them
How do the Aerius compare to the Aeon i? There is a pair for sale nearby for $800
Awesome video and thank you. Martin Logan is the Winner for sure!
Do Martin Logans plug directly into the wall? I'm wondering if the Magnepans, which are only powered by the amplifier, want a little more power for direct comparison. They definitely can sound great at lower volumes with a 70w amp. I'm not really sure where the falloff in amp ROI is for the 2.7qr, but I know my 1.6's sounded fuller on a 200w amp than the 85w amp I originally had.
Being an Aerius user for 15+ years, I can confidently say I love the Aerius beyond compare...
Having to choose would drive me nuts. They all sound great, but in different ways and for different reasons.
Whats the crossover setting on the sub for Maggies? It seems its not dialed in right and or placement of sub is off or both as the bass seemed really weak.
I think there's no sub playing
Very cool video
Thank you for this - may I ask what microphone(s) or equipment you used to record? Others have mentioned the placement of the Magnepans. Having lived with them off and on for > 30 years, I would also suggest they come out from the walls more and you might also like significant or even aggressive toe in. Thanks again for demo.
Thanks so much Carlton for watching the video and your feedback. The recording device is listed in the description. Regarding the placement of the Maggies, this are in the exact position that the manual book suggested (no toe in) and as close to the back wall as the bass is sufficient. Anyway, I already sold them. Regards.
@@HiFiers May i know why you sold it?
At the end, which one you you keep among them & best sounding
@@adekusmana4689 Well, from those pairs I just keep the Aerius i since it's more the kind of sound that I like. Now though I have a great pair of reQuest so stay tuned for a new comparison.
@@HiFiers please advise on ML Vantage series, is it that good / recommended?

NICE. How do I buy that amp in the USA? I have Martin Logan SL3.
Three totally diferent technologies, I like all of them.
