Hey Paula, I’ll explain here how your song became “lost media.” The search started in 2007 when your song ‘How Long’ was seen in various random bootleg DVDs from russia. (30 second snippets were on the DVD menu.) No one was able to find the full song, where it came from, or any info about it for some reason. Music recognizers couldn’t get it, after googling the lyrics there weren’t any matches, and it had remained that way for the past 17 years. We haven’t known about the movie till recently, aswell. A longer search started earlier this year which led to someone eventually finding the song and you, the author. We had only low quality snippets of the song from bootleg DVDs beforehand, so finding the full song & author on a podcast was a big deal. To add, most of the DVD’s all had the same segments so we only had a little over a minute of the song before finding it.
Your song was seen in various russian bootleg DVD’s because: Various unofficial russian dubbings of the movie were made, with your song playing at the very end (not in full, though.) The bootleggers likely liked your song ripped it right from the unofficial dubbings of the movie of it to add to their DVDs menus.
Finding this song was a very difficult task, it’s been a 17 year long search. Also because this song was not released officially or on any streaming services, that’s another reason why it was so difficult to find. The reason why your song became lost is not because the movie didn't have your name, but rather the fact that people didn't realize the song was licensed and made an appearance on that very movie, until several years passed by and people started to catch on.

What i find is funny is that for 16 years nobody could find the origin despite it being featured in a movie AND a canadian tv show. How is it that nobody even recognized it in all that time is beyond me.
@@adrianpaul1985 Probably because there are billions of people on earth and there has been maybe a few thousand of them in total with knowledge of this search. Unfortunately, the search just didn't reach the right ears until it was found the other day 🤷♂😁
@@adrianpaul1985 Even "The Livin' and the Dyin' " (Jim Dawson), which was released on a studio album from a major US record label, managed to become a lost song ... there was a hunt for the song until one day, someone just said "hey I know that song". the world is still a huge place and there's lots of mystery out there to discover :)

I am Alex, one of the people hearing the infamous snippet of song on the DVD menu in Russia back in 2007 and trying to find it, and one of people initiating and joining the search as I've been looking for it for ages, too, making posts at one or another time at different years, until the one on WatZatSong kicked that stone off the cliff. Before that, it was nowhere to be found; searching for lyrics yielded nothing, Shazam when it appeared didn't know it.. It was clear that the song wasn't out there enough. :)) Now, I'm really happy that it has been named and got all the appreciation and attention that it deserves. It did not only get the closure for so many people, it avalanched into this rediscovery. I was very much surprised back in the day and later that a song like this remained unknown for so long up until now, and I'm elated and overjoyed that it's out there now, and that you're out there, because I was afraid that it could be something like a demo piece that wouldn't ever get its name and appreciation because it was so great. It's an amazing sight to see to what extent the search blossomed, too! I would also love to read the full lyrics when they get released and I'll be waiting for the song release, too. :) I'm so cheered to know that the people are now here, that it's taken to the community, and listening to the song and to your response really puts my heart in the happy place.It's not about identification even, my own search for it, as, I think, for the community as well, has long since become about appreciation and discovery. Dear Alex! You are a legend in my recent discovery! Thank you so much for writing. I have read and re-read your post. It is so beautifully written and conveyed with such humility. I can't tell you what it means to me to read how the song impacted you and the others. I love how we are all mind-blown by this song resurfacing/uniting/then connecting - but for different reasons. From opposite ends of the solved mystery, we are all left with our jaws hanging while jumping out of our seats! It feels so satisfying to see this song come full circle for you, the lost wave community & subreddit HLWIT, not to mention for me, and the musicians who gave their heart and talent to this song. It really is a very humbling experience for me too, and I love that feeling. Deep inside I'm really glad that it's gotten all that traction, and I am overjoyed to read your reply. Well...at one point, I started to appreciate that small snippet of the song, but very soon I thought that it was kind of..unfair that THIS piece didn't have a name. Although we know many pieces of art in history that went through difficult paths, but it's just that not one of them had to. the fact that a song specifically made for a movie landed from a ukrainian forum in 2007, then on to a bootleg DVD player called the MULTIPARAD 1-7 (with MULTIPARAD 4 having a fragment of the song) and then on RUclips where it became found. Insane.
Heartwarming when lostwave artists are still active to see people showing interest in their music. A bit gimmicky but it'll be interesting if you meet up with other former lostwave artist like Panchiko and give insight as to how musicians lose their music in obscurity, and perhaps help out lostwave searches.
I think these songs would be found so much quicker if more people knew about this community. It’s such a niche subject that almost nobody knows about. I discovered lostwave a while ago because of an EKT video, but even then, I thought it was just that song that was lost. After I heard about Like The Wind, I really went down the rabbit hole. Now I have an entire playlist dedicated to lostwave music😂

I loved it very much since when it was a “lost media.” Everyone used teddy bear pictures for your “mysterious song.” I always thought it was The Cranberries’s outtake song, but it could have been possibly made by somebody else and was actually released. This song was super obscure, but it was somehow made into Russian bootleg DVDs. It’s find it sad how some people theorized that your song was AI-generated, as many people in lost media community are brainwashed with “fake” or “AI-generated” theories. But now we can prove these people wrong. This was the lost song I hoped the most to be found! It was so nostalgic, emotional, and beautiful! I was amazed how a song that sounds so good can be forgotten, but now we found the true background of this song. We all appreciate you, Paula, for making this masterpiece. So what i believe happened, is someone took the song from the movie it was featured in (the one you approved) and used it on the bootleg someone made and cut it into segments for some reason then that bootleg blew up, basically because the bootleg didnt have any credits people didnt know who the song was made by, got to mention, you have got to release this song, its so powerful.
I assure you it’s just as surreal for us as it is for you! granted I’ve only known about this for a few months not 16 years, but getting to hear more than 30-second clips is just fantastic, and I’ve had it on loop for the past 2 days. we’re all excited for whatever you decide to do next!

I am Alex, one of the people hearing the infamous snippet of song on the DVD menu in Russia back in 2007 and trying to find it, and one of people initiating and joining the search as I've been looking for it for ages, too, making posts at one or another time at different years, until the one on WatZatSong kicked that stone off the cliff. Before that, it was nowhere to be found; searching for lyrics yielded nothing, Shazam when it appeared didn't know it.. It was clear that the song wasn't out there enough. :)) Now, I'm really happy that it has been named and got all the appreciation and attention that it deserves. It did not only get the closure for so many people, it avalanched into this rediscovery. I was very much surprised back in the day and later that a song like this remained unknown for so long up until now, and I'm elated and overjoyed that it's out there now, and that you're out there, because I was afraid that it could be something like a demo piece that wouldn't ever get its name and appreciation because it was so great. It's an amazing sight to see to what extent the search blossomed, too! I would also love to read the full lyrics when they get released and I'll be waiting for the song release, too. :) I'm so cheered to know that the people are now here, that it's taken to the community, and listening to the song and to your response really puts my heart in the happy place.It's not about identification even, my own search for it, as, I think, for the community as well, has long since become about appreciation and discovery. I'm extremely happy for finally having the opportunity to put this message here, and express my gratitude for you as the author behind it.
My own personal ode to wonder that I confirmed time and again by now, is that if someone carries the banner long enough, the cause behind it can't ever possibly falter, as long as it has even just one person on its side. And after that, who knows?..

Dear Alex! You are a legend in my recent discovery! Thank you so much for writing. I have read and re-read your post. It is so beautifully written and conveyed with such humility. I can't tell you what it means to me to read how the song impacted you and the others. I love how we are all mind-blown by this song resurfacing/uniting/then connecting - but for different reasons. From opposite ends of the solved mystery, we are all left with our jaws hanging while jumping out of our seats!
It feels so satisfying to see this song come full circle for you, the lost wave community & subreddit HLWIT, not to mention for me, and the musicians who gave their heart and talent to this song. We put so much love into this song, and to see it have wings...the fact that it has been flying for 16 years and only landed a few weeks ago, is just incredible AND surreal! It warms my heart to see how music can be so powerful and uniting. It really moves me to learn that some members of this community were probably searching during the pandemic and that the mystery and search gave them a shared purpose and meaning. To hear that some people made real friends through their search for my song brings me so much joy! (I am also so relieved that you all were in great spirits upon hearing the full version! It could have been a real disaster/letdown for you all *artist sigh of relief!!*)
Sometimes, I feel like I am watching a movie unfold before me, but then I take a step back and realize that I am in this movie! I wanted to thank you personally for having so much interest in my song in the first place and for being curious enough to inquire, not to mention being so tenacious that you asked about it several times.
The thing I love the most is that while the mystery has been solved, the song continues to take off and fly and most recently raised 1K for Music Heals charity and will support youth, young adults, and bereavement camps through music therapy. You all inspired me to pay it forward with the hopes that you all can now see the massive impact it has made on my life and the lives of others who could use music therapy.
Personally, I am so honoured to see all the art and inspiration that is coming out of this community, whether it be short films, cover songs, illustrated art, or new songs. It's beyond my wildest dreams.
The song reminds me of a tulip I planted years ago. For years, it didn't blossom, then one spring, it just appeared, seemingly out of nowhere.
I think we all have a 'How Long' in our lives, but sometimes we lose faith..sometimes it takes just one person to help turn the soil so to speak - to help what we planted get the nourishment it needs and deserves. I can't thank you enough. I am so grateful to you and the others who were so dedicated in the search.

It's an absolutely... I'm trying to find a word here, and I think that I feel absolutely dazed? stunned? by reading your reply, and it feels as if I'm suddenly on air. It really is a very humbling experience for me too, and I love that feeling. Deep inside I'm really glad that it's gotten all that traction, and I am overjoyed to read your reply. It's really like a legend and it feels very profound to have played a part in it. Doesn't matter what part, but when it was finally confirmed, all I wanted was to write a message of gratitude for this piece of music and that it be noticed.
Well...at one point, I started to appreciate that small snippet of the song, but very soon I thought that it was kind of..unfair that THIS piece didn't have a name. Although we know many pieces of art in history that went through difficult paths, but it's just that not one of them had to. I think that the most amazing parts of modern technologies is that it allows to find a lot; to connect everything and everyone who we previously thought out of reach or almost like 'living on another planet'. Well, that's my 'pet' distortion of thinking: I always forget that it's possible to just write a message and it will be there. Umm...when I was a kid, I always thought that artists were totally out of reach (my mother still makes fun of that a little, if I'm completely honest. :))) ) but it's absolutely amazing to have read your words. Count that as a small wonder for me, too.
My sincerest regards for all the upcoming 2024+ year, the creative works, and every accomplishment that you decide to pursue, to bring fulfillment and joy. I hope it doesn't sound too 'cheesy' because this is really what I want to write. It's amazing to have your reply. I can't help but understand that this all was made possible by all the effort done by all the amazing people out there. And I really admired watching this unfold. :)) it was some sort of satisfaction that felt like "Okay, this part of the world is now in correct order" 🤭. I'll be on in touch with the events, for certain!! I really want to see what further good will play out. the fact that a song specifically made for a movie landed from a ukrainian forum in 2007, then on to a bootleg DVD player called the MULTIPARAD 1-7 (with MULTIPARAD 4 having a fragment of the song) and then on RUclips where it became found. Insane.
Heartwarming when lostwave artists are still active to see people showing interest in their music. A bit gimmicky but it'll be interesting if you meet up with other former lostwave artist like Panchiko and give insight as to how musicians lose their music in obscurity, and perhaps help out lostwave searches.
I think these songs would be found so much quicker if more people knew about this community. It’s such a niche subject that almost nobody knows about. I discovered lostwave a while ago because of an EKT video, but even then, I thought it was just that song that was lost. After I heard about Like The Wind, I really went down the rabbit hole. Now I have an entire playlist dedicated to lostwave music😂

In retrospect, we're pretty sure Secret Lives was the origin of what the bootleg DVD makers ripped and put on the DVD menus, but the DVD menus themselves didn't credit you nor mention Secret Lives at all, so nobody had any idea!

Your song is so amazing, Paula. I loved it very much since when it was a “lost media.” Everyone used teddy bear pictures for your “mysterious song.” I always thought it was The Cranberries’s outtake song, but it could have been possibly made by somebody else and was actually released.
This song was super obscure, but it was somehow made into Russian bootleg DVDs. It’s find it sad how some people theorized that your song was AI-generated, as many people in lost media community are brainwashed with “fake” or “AI-generated” theories. But now we can prove these people wrong.
This was the lost song I hoped the most to be found! It was so nostalgic, emotional, and beautiful! So what i believe happened, is someone took the song from the movie it was featured in (the one you approved) and used it on the bootleg someone made and cut it into segments for some reason then that bootleg blew up, basically because the bootleg didnt have any credits people didnt know who the song was made by, got to mention, you have got to release this song, its so powerful.
