I absolutely LOVE Imperial 2030. Which is just a slightly different sequel to Imperial. I understand both are about equal. It looks like Risk, but plays nothing like it as it's really all about investments, very temporary control of nations, and trying to personally pocket profits from the nations' actions. The game is very simple to learn (with a little rules 'leaflet') but uproariously fun. There are usually massive amounts of conversational negotiation as you try to persuade players to trust you enough to leave your borders alone etc. Also sneakiness as you try to act at the right time to achieve a healthy combination of expanding armies/navies, moving them and taxing the resulting dominated territories before other players start to push you back. I really, really, really love the way that you can physically prove your good intentions to another player by using you precious occasional bond-buying opportunity to buy bonds similar to the person you want to please. The logic being that you don't want to waste time investing in a nation that you may later attack. So casting your eye across players' bond purchases gives you a kind of 'heat map' of their true loyalty XD We use poker chips rather than the paper money, which feel thematic (as Imperial 2030 is set in the future) and is much easier to handle. I would say it works best with something like 5 players, so that there's plenty of shifting loyalty.
@@fenirob I get a slightly similar vibe from the awesome game Hansa Teutonica. Just in terms of how fluid and spatial it is, and how it's like rats fighting in a barrel with players easily able to take revenge etc. Worth checking out, and my favourite game ever.

How did you get that fancy paper money? My edition of imperial absolutely does not have those fine dollar bills.
The paper money came with my copy. I have since upgraded to poker chips.
