I love how free oriented James Carter is he is one of the best and a tune like olio that is a great song. Eventually you should update the quartet version of James Carter doing take the a train that is a fantastic version I love it and it’s one of my favorites you can really hear James Carter doing that train sound in his wonderful solo the quartet version I heard on the radio it’s a fantastic rendition it’s very fast and free that’s what I love about it I love saxophone player stuck in really stretch out wide and play hard and play really fast it’s great.
Tunes called olio I love the squeaking screaming saxophone sounds I could listen to that stuff all day and never get tired of it I’m hoping that RUclips will put out a quick chat version of take the entry Manda Cito crazy on that one. Desperation released me.Wow this is one of my favorite Version of one of my all-time favorite
James Carter played the sax more incredibly than just about anyone who's touched the horn. His ability to make the saxophone do ANYTHING is totally mindblowing. He also has a huge musical personality - he's able to conjour a lot of emotion in his playing - he plays ballads amazingly well, an on a tune like this, he's got a fun, exuberant vibe..like he does in a lot of his solos. His passion and musical sense of humor light up his audiences of both musicians and non-muscians every time he plays.
i think that also, as an artist and sax WIZARD, he plays how he wants to play. And he's allowed to do so. His playing is always a spectacle, and even though he differs from a lot of other jazz musicians with some of his musical concepts, he's extremely original, can play the f*** out of the sax, and I'm surprised no one here took a moment to appreciate all he DOES have to offer
james is very brave . even in such a free form of art like jazz , the highest percent of players travel usually on very well known paths . research uniqueness and love for the the tradition rarely match toghether . in james carter music j feel both . rythm change is a taboo for jazzmusicians , this oleo might not be his best performance but is interesting and thoughtfull in the stream of eddie lockjaw davis and don byas or even george coleman
I have researched Carter rather extensively and listened to a good deal of his recorded work, and what I hear when I listen to this is a lot of James' worked out ideas and licks. It's just so fast that it's difficult to keep up with if you haven't heard a lot of his playing. I can say that to me, it's apparent that he's not just screwing around, but there is sense to what he's doing here.
For reference to an example of Coltrane having something worked out, check out the originally released "Lazy Bird" and then check out the alternate take which was released later. It is easy to hear that Trane had clearly come up with some of the lines he was going to use over the form ahead of time, and he was prepared to repeat them in his solo for any number of takes. Were the two solos identical? No, but they were very close. And all of the great improvisers did this. They came prepared.
I made a comment the othr day pertaning to Mr. Carter,i retract he is very bright an enventive I myself am an old dog trained from smoke filled bars lose women and waking up in a different continent not even remembering whr the gig was the night b4,this is the curse of a socalld jazz musixian, but im still in the fight for our art, keep playn, from the cradle to the grave,yaHerdme?!!!!
Oh sure, we're always trying to stretch the boundaries of the music and create something genuinely fresh. But at the same time, we must pay respect to the tradition. When I say "worked out ideas and licks", I am of course implying that there are ideas in there that weren't actually conceived on the spot in the recording studio. But they are indeed original ideas that Carter himself conceived at some point in time and practiced and prepared, so when it came time to perform, he could execute them.

Who are these people that you know and respect? ......Get a life!!
@@GeoCoppens So you're a more highly respected musician touring internationally, hanging with Sonny Rollins? Have a seat. You don't know what you're talking about.
@@GeoCoppens Wow, you really got me with your superior intellect. I'd like to see you get up on stage with James, who I happen to know, and try to survive trying to follow the changes. LMAO
