When Shawn pushed off down that hill, all I could see was him wrapping his legs around that tree. I am glad he didn't. Some nice finds guys. That lock was amazing.
Pa. started licensing dogs in 1906. Virginia was the first state to license dogs in 1853. Babit was used as bearing material before bearings were invented. I found a piece that was cast into the sand about the size of a quart of milk and 1" thick at a 1700's forge site. The blacksmith used a chisel to cut out what he needed to melt for a bearing. Cool finds guys. I dig Pa. too.
Thanks, I knew about licenses starting in 1853, but didn't know when they started in Pa. Thanks for the info. That is interesting about the babit also.
Gotta dig when you can despite the snow. Remember that Christmas storm and it really dipped south. Some nice relics and sweet IHP! Have to agree that the lock is the piece de resistance! Must be all brass and so want to dig one of those oldies! TC, ATB and happy hunting!
Thanks, CCD. Shawn only hurt his pride. No rocks were harmed in filming this video. Lol. As you know, research pays off sometimes at these old sites we find.
Crick in Oklahoma is not running water, but a pain in the neck that makes your head hard to move. 😮 I guess we are just hard headed! I’m amazed that the ground was not frozen. Enjoy the new machine. Great padlock with a part still moving! 😊
That was an awesome hunt. Babbit bearing was invented by some guy named Babbit in 1839. It was composed of tin, antimony, and copper. Real tin is quite expensive. Later on as the price got higher they started to replace the tin with lead. Tin lasted longer. You could take your old worn out bearing out and melt your babbit and form it to the shaft. Sometimes if the bearing lay horizontal in the equipment you could remove old bearing and melt and pour your new one in place. In some of the old crushers, ball mills, etc. in mining i'd run into them. Unlike some of the crap you have to do to work on this new stuff it was very easy to use. The "miners" tags i find unique as most miners would be assigned a number. When they went underground to work they'd hang their tag on an "in" peg. When they came out, they'd hang it on the "out" peg. If there was ever an accident underground they'd know who was missing by where their tag hung. You never took it home with you,, as you can see why. If something happened they'd still be looking for you. The only way i can fathom would be if they retired, quit, or got fired. Now, another thing that tag could be used for would be a load number. Again frequently used in mining when they sent a load to the smelter or mill, to insure the right person or mine got paid for the right load. This would be a better explanation for them by a sawmill. John Doe #68 turned in x amount of trees or flour. What ever the mill ran. Lock was a cool find. An experienced lock smith could still make a key for it. I had a friend that was and did. He however has crossed the river. Great hunt!
Wow Congrats on the Lock. Just Beautiful. 1878. Love the Dog Tax Tag also. Great Hunt. Hope you do great with the Legend I'm still trying to set mine up to my liking. Take Care
Right on that's cool to hear. Me I hate to say it I've been a little frustrated with my Legend. I'm used to Whites Detectors and the Anfibo turn it on and go. I'm hoping I can figure it out soon.

Awesome hunt guys. Love the old woods to hunt in. Congratulations on nice finds. The lock is great. IHP is cool. I'm only up in Pa for about a year now and detect by myself. Would like to hunt with you guys. ATB Greenie
Thanks Darryl, this is Dave, but Shawn has been using the Legend for the last 2 months since we've been going out. He has been doing great with it. It hits hard on signals.
We've only been to Mercer a few times. We got a permission to do an old one room school and did some door knocking. I would try some door knocking or if you know anyone with an old house that would let you metal detect the property. We study old maps and find were the old home sites were in the woods and fields and get permission to hunt those.
Yes we did Mike. The IHP was found close but that all we got right there. There was some dirt moved around in there too so that may have played a role in not finding much in that area. Thanks for the comment!
@@PARelicHunters yeah I figured you guys did but if you guys go back go down that side wash where they diverted the stream see what you find my find something good I figure you would
@@darylmorse7337 There was an in and out board. Each miner had two tags, if one tag was on the board that meant he was underground. They could keep track of who was in the mine this way. Two of the same number on the board showed he was out of the mine.

That is a very nice lock! Hopefully Shawn didn't break his tail bone. lol
Thanks Matt, Shawn made it through OK, but the rock was in bad shape. 😆
