    When you hear the word telephone, if you're old-fashioned like me, this is most likely what you see in your mind. The venerable 2500 set, this one is a modern version made by CortelCo. Mechanical bell ringer and all. This one was taken out of service, probably was replaced with some sort of IP phone.

    I've always liked how thick their push buttons are - they look so satisfying to press into. Sadly, I was born too late to ever have these in my house, so I just have to resist myself whenever I encounter these at older motels.

      Yes, everything was quality built back in the day, this was normal for everything. Over the years things got cheaper and cheaper made, to the point now where it only has to work once out of the box.

    I Remember The Day When Telephones Used To Cost $700

      I remember the days of personal computers for the home costing $3000-$4000, and I was alive when it occurred. I remember when hard drive storage space cost $100 per MEGABYTE. I remember when VHS video cassettes were about $15 apiece of blank ones. When floppy diskettes were about 20 bucks for a pack of 10. And I was alive through all of it.

    These were great telephones, however this particular variant isn't as failure-retardant as you may think.. The infinite-range volume controls in the handset have a reputation of becoming unreliable over time as they get dirty.. Handsets sans-volume control obviously don't suffer from this issue..
    This one is probably of very recent make, as far as I know it these are still in production.. And if you want to pay the extra dollars, you can indeed get one made in USA..

      Any rotary control as such will eventually get the crackling sound, that's what DeOxIt is for.

    I have a couple rotary desk phones that aren't hooked up. I need to run some new jacks for them. It's one of those things that's been on my to do list since I bought my house 17 years ago. It never gets very far up the list as you can tell as more pressing things get added on top of it. One is a Western Electric I think that has the bell disconnected because it used to be used in a house that was on a party line and would ring whether it was for us or the other party. The other is an Automatic Electric model 80. i also have the AE 90 rotary wall phone in my kitchen. My problem is I converted my phone to my cable company and they don't recognize pulse dialing so I need to get a pulse to tone inline converter. Maybe set up in a way that I have a splitter going into the converter so it can run 2 phones with one instead of buying 2 converters. The converters cost about $50 each.

      Still haven't run new jacks in 17 years? Yeah, I know THAT list, have one of them myself. Lately, I've been writing things down to an actual list that I can refer to, instead of having one particular task "strike my fancy" that day. Believe it or not, it works. There were a number of things on that list that I've been meaning to do for at least the last 8 to 10 years, and I got them done. Small, mundane little projects like that. It's also a huge sense of accomplishment once done. Try it.
      Wow, you really were on a party line back in the day? I've heard of them but never knew anyone who had one. Those would never work today, you know, Millennials...
      The pulse to tone adapters can be found cheaper for sure. One I know of is dialgizmo (dialgizmo.com), they list at $40 but I don't know about shipping. I'm sure there are others available on ebay or Amazon. Whether one is better than another I don't know; I'm lucky enough not to require such an adapter on my cable company line.

    Just yesterday I finally put an accurate dial card in my 1960 wall mounted #554 set. Instead of saying someones number and area code from where it was shipped from on eBay it now says "HOward 8-XXXX" The EXchange name is correct for my local 468 office, I verified that. Sorry for blanking out the station number, I would trust you and the regulars with it, Jay, but if some random imbecile who has never seen your videos before comes a calling, that would never do. PM me if you ever happen to really want it, Jay.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  6 лет назад

      That's actually how I've gotten it; I never flipped the card to see if it says "Area Code". Regardless, my number wouldn't have had an exchange office name like in the old days as it's a VoIP line. In fact, the number would have been illegal back in the day, as the middle digit of the exchange is "0".
      If I ever decided to correct all of the cards, I'd insist only on authenticity--the number would have to be TYPED onto the card using an IBM Selectric!

      I know, right? I had an electric one a few years ago, Sears badged, I think, it was built like a manual model that had been electrified, no type ball or daisy wheel. For whatever reason, the space bar started to fail to advance the carriage, I took a good look at the mechanism and for the life of me I couldn't figure out why it stopped advancing, all other keys caused it to advance. I ended up getting rid of it, and replacing it with another hasn't been a top priority and as such I have not. A friend wanted one so when I found another, a Smith-Corona manual, I got it for him. You are telling me that I have to get one now!

      @jaykay18  6 лет назад

      Whenever you're ready. All I was saying was that I would have expected a gentleman of your caliber to own one already, but you did. As replacing it hasn't been a top priority, that's OK, as long as it's on the list.

    I just got a 500 set made by western electric. do I need to do anything else to convert the phone over to rj11 from the four prong besides install a new connector?

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  6 лет назад

      Not really, in fact they used to make adapter cables from the 4 prong to RJ-11. RadioShack used to sell them, and in fact our local grocery store carried them when I was a kid. In my old bedroom I had the 4 prong jack on the wall. It was mounted in such a way that the adapter's jack faced towards the floor, so I had to plug the cable in there, then into the jack, and it had to squish the carpet down a bit.
      They sell 2 different types of these adapters. One has an RJ-11 plug (with the little plastic clip) that goes into a modular jack, the other end of it breaks out into the familiar 4-prong style that you then plug your phone into. That's probably the one you need. They sell them, they're on ebay and Amazon, but they're a few bucks because there's not much demand for them. The other option of course is to wire a new cord into the phone with an RJ-11 plug at the end. That breaks the continuity of it being vintage, but will make it work.
      Next step is to see if rotary will work on your line, if not, they sell adapters for that as well.

    • @tallboyyyy

      He could also look for a vintage 4 prong jack on ebay and replace a modular jack with one for the vintage phone if it is something he plans on leaving connected.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  6 лет назад

      Yes, that's an option as well. My parents' house has a bunch of 4-prong jacks. There was one in each room upstairs, my old bedroom, my parents' bedroom, and one basement phone that I remember were 4-prong. One of the upstairs rooms (if I recall correctly) had several old direct-wire boxes on the baseboard; we believe the previous owner of the house had multiple lines, and may have used that room as a sort of office. There's been furniture and other stuff in front of those boxes for MANY years, I think the last time they saw the light of day was 1990.
