I’m usually always the shorter fighter and that helped make me a more elusive & creative fighter. Feints, head movement, footwork, sneaky jabs, body work, leg kicks, all necessary to avoid running into a mean counter from someone punching down on you. 😅

I’m 5’11” 1/2” and when I moved up from 165Lbs to 178lbs I encountered two taller opponents than myself. Definitely more difficult since I was always accustomed to being the taller boxer in the ring.

jabs, teeps, keep distance, dont get trapped in corners, use your knees when someone comes in with a clinch if you cant avoid it. dont search the knockout or combos, chip them off bit by bit go for points
source: a often smaller fighter that gets frustrated with this style a lot

Hypothetically, how would you deal with a taller fighter that does not want to maintain range and is very much a pressure fighter. I've got a sparring partner like this and I just can't figure it out. Going head to head gets really messy, and when I try and be more evasive closing distance is always risky because he has long legs, and like I said staying inside is messy. He just puts one forearm on top of my head and starts throwing body shots and uppercuts with the other hand. I can defend those well enough, but I cant do anything offensively without breaking contact and starting back on the outside. (He has around six inches on me height wise, coupled with extra long limbs.)

Eat the kick and close the distance. Corner them against the ropes/cage using pressure and lateral footwork. Have superior boxing, throw shots to the body. Works on karate/tkd guys every time.

You can "catch" lowkicks instead of checking them then counter with a overhand.
For example you get a lowkick to your left leg. Once it makes contact catch the ankle with your left hand and simultaneously throw a right overhand.
This video will help, start looking at 4:16 to see what I mean:
      ruclips.net/video/hM4K-CBpytk/видео.html
It works in Kickboxing too, I tried it.
Just make sure you're reach for the catch only once it has made contact otherwise you may fall for a feint and leave your head open.
      ruclips.net/video/fPFafyu5q6g/видео.html
This is the video I learned from of how to do it...very good explanation.
