I drive a 3.2 i6 engine and it's fantastic. The car doesn't state "I'm fast" as it likes to 'shuttle you to your destination' as you've mentioned Bob. However, like my wife's D5, it has the power when you need it. On comfort when you arrive at your destination you feel like it has gently munched away the miles. On long journeys the petrol models are pretty economical for their cc. I hope to see more petrol models in the future. I personally like the drive and performance of petrol. However I did drive a V40 D3 last year in Sweden and it was quiet and swiftly albeit a tad bland of a drive.
In relation to the comfort of Volvo vs the Germans, I've had a Volvo S60 for some years and this week I've been given an Audi A4 as a courtesy car while my Volvo's getting fixed. The ride and hardness of the seats in the A4 are so atrocious my spine is still in shambles. I don't know if it's the Audi that's too uncomfortable or the Volvo that's too comfortable if you get what I mean. Bob, quick question: why would I buy an S80 over an S60? Size? Equipment? I've never been able to fathom the crucial difference.
If your buying used, you get tremendous value for money with the S80! IMO, its a little more relaxing to drive than the S60 (current one anyway). You get all the equipment on these, and I would say the interiors are a tad better than the S60. Obviously you also get more back leg room, the cabin is bigger. Its no like the S60 is claustrophobic or anything but this is much more roomy, a little like the difference between the inside of an XC60 and the inside of an XC90. Audi's comfort? Please, their seats are no way near as soft yet supportive as Volvo's, you either have hard and supportive or soft and spongey. They focus on their handling too, meaning not a rock hard, but a firmer suspension setup makes them much more bumpy. The S80 will go round a corner like a wedding cake, but at least your comfortable when your spinning the steering wheel round and round!
Frank Fencepost I agree that the S80 is amazing value for money, but then again, so is the S60! I guess the big difference between the two is, as you say, more space and refinement in the S80. Equipment-wise, I believe they're on par. Thanks for the reply!
Alexander Torres it is a very noticeable difference. not by reading the specs and dimensions, but when you ride it. I always thought the same that the s80 is just a little bigger than s60, till I drove it, and that was it, my last s60 was the one I drove before the s80! however, if u prefer smaller and more sportier look, s60 still great
Apart from the sheer comfort, style and design of Volvos - the main reason I'd never buy an Audi, Merc or BMW is that sad 'badge snobbery' effect that they command. Why be a sheep and follow the crowd? Your review is superb, catches the essence and appeal of the Volvo over the Germans. Sad that people buy cars and get ripped off purely on the badge
An s80 with D4 is probably better it has 181 HP. but it was also available as D5 ie 206 HP but it was upgraded in 2011 to 215 HP and also reduced diesel consumption by 8%
Come on Volvo, I know your owned by Geely now but give us a bit of that famous Scandenavian design before no one is interested in buying your cars anymore.
A Very Capable Smooth Economic and Ergonomicaly Plush I Drive 3.2 its a 2007 The Body style is The Same til 2015 What Can I say Overall? a 10 why? safe plush and Stylish Exellent Fuel Economy Absolutley Bullet Proof...
Volvo is very good - I tested the older models and they are very silent inside and comfortable also unique car on road but and ther is always "but" - it is boring outside, inside, and parts are expensive and reselling car in not easy also it is not so reliable like rivals.
Always liked the look of Volvo ( modern ones anyway) but that one just looks odd to me if had the money to buy a car in that price range I wouldn't even consider this, just looks bland. PS any chance we can get that weather back, fuckin freezin out there.
I know, it's been so stormy I've a pain in my hole looking at the rain. This was filmed at the tail end of the hot spell, it was 32c outside when I filmed it! I miss the sun

I've a 2006 D5 twin turbo model manual, full spec , eats bmw audi for breakfast
Merc, BMW or Audi badge outside your house attracts burglars
The facelift (if people notice), is a removable/upgradable bumper and grille. Inside the same! Gr8 car, esp. Petrol models.
Funny how i prefer the Volvo design compared to any german car ... in 1980's it was the other way around. Just a shame there are no RWD/Sport version
i've always had a soft spot for the s80 :)
Those annoyingly perfect Germans :D Underrated car, I'd love to own one :)
Fine review. Thank you.
It sounds good because of 5 cylinder engine :)
A lot of reviewers complain that the volvo 5 cyl Diesel is noisy. Myself, I think its sound is second only to a V8.
The D3 is a 4 cylinder engine. Same as you get in a ford Mondeo.
@@AWMJoeyjoejoe There was a 4 cylinder D3, but also a 5. This is the 5. It sounds completely different from the 4, and you can hear it in the video.
You could spend the ten grand on, spoilers, body-kit, tinted windows, ICE upgrade and big huge wheels. Then it wouldn't be quite so Volvo-esk..! :-)
Good point, a nice set of alloys and a big spoiler would make it look a little meaner
Not heated seats? Volvo got heated seats as standard from 1990 ?
yamahaevo never rode in a Volvo that does not have heated seats. btw, I drive s80 and it does have heated seats. USA Volvo
Yeah he is wrong.

A hoondred and terty six horsepower. Wow...
Has to be a petrol S80 to feel what this car can do!
Volvo is very good - I tested the older models and they are very silent inside and comfortable also unique car on road but and ther is always "but" - it is boring outside, inside, and parts are expensive and reselling car in not easy also it is not so reliable like rivals.
"like driving butter"....whats that like:-)
I'd happily buy one nice car & keep 10 grand

I don't like the colour on this one, doesn't look as prestige.
Summer came early in Éire? ;-)

Yes, the VOLVO S80 D3's only 150 horse power and it's a 4 cilynder engine.
