Asking them to repeat themselves often, and call them a different name than they give you, ha, it’s great! Asking them to hold on while you look for a pen, then again for paper, and then for your glasses lol, plus taking a lonnng pause during the search, it’s honestly the best stress reliever 😂. It is crazy what they will actually endure to get people’s hard earned money.

The IRS will NEVER e-mail; or use any other form of electronic communication.
In the US, you can not be imprisoned or arrested for failure to properly pay your taxes. For proven scamming, yes, but not unless the IRS has clear and solid evidence. In these cases, they DON'T give you a heads up.
The IRS does not want and will NEVER ask for your bank, credit card, debit card info.
And, finally, if anyone from 'the IRS' asks you to pay your back taxes in Wal*Mart (or other international retailer) gift cards, they are NOT the IRS.

I love getting fake IRS calls! I waste their time as long as possible, then when they threaten to hang up I begin to talk really quiet so they turn up their headset and then I give them a good blast from the survival whistle that I keep by the phone. They usually curse at me and hang up...so I call them back. After I call several times and immediately blasting the whistle, a "supervisor" gets on the line and threatens to call the police. I always gleefully invite them to go right ahead. I then inform him that they've made a bad mistake by calling the wrong guy and that I've got all day. After another 20 calls or so, they disconnect the number. I make a post it note and wait a few days when I have a little free time...and then start calling again!

In the UK, I’d been sending details of my unearned income (income from investments), which is paid untaxed, to HMRC for several years. It came about that I reckoned I’d been paying too much tax and I put in a claim for a refund. To negotiate this, I had to phone them at a pre-arranged time for a complicated interview. With my computer up and running, I was ready with the answers to any questions which would be asked to confirm information I had already submitted.
Then I was almost knocked out when the interviewer named an account I had and gave it’s correct number, asking what I had earned from it; when I had not yet informed them of this one due to the fact it hadn’t paid any interest yet.

    I love the scammers.
I mess with them all the time.
Ask really stupid questions, and pretend I don't get it. Then ask the same question in different ways, until they get mad.
    Then ask for their manger.
And complain that the first person was verbally abusive and unprofessional. Neglecting their issue for the scam call. And treating them with lawsuit. They usually get irate at this point, and cuss me out and tell me the police are coming to arrest me.
At this point. I tell them to bring it on, that I am armed to the tooth and am ready for a gun fight, Bring it on!!
    They hang up immediately.
    And typically don't call back.
    I love the scammers.

    - Right away, I tell them I know I owe money, and then I say that I can pay $4,000 of the $9,600 I owe and if they will settle for this, I will send cash or a money order tomorrow, just give me the address to send it to..... then I say that I am just getting out of my shower, and if they can hold on, I will get back to the phone as fast as I can.... that I just need to get dry so I can get to my desk and write down where to send the money.... then I say “Hold on, I will get to my desk as soon as possible”....ok?
Then, I put the. Phone down and wait until they finally hang up. (One caller actually stayed on the line for almost 20 minutes, but most get frustrated at about 8 to 10 minutes and finally hang up. It is usually interesting listening to them talk in the background while you are wasting their lying time.

Also foreigners who have recently moved and have no idea how the laws and the system works. They mostly victimize immigrants and the uneducated who are barely getting by. My friend Andrea's late mom, during the early stages of her dementia, still had not had arrangements made to safety proof the phone. Scammers would call the house and use Mary's confusion to offer her this "amazing vitamin program for only $59.00 a month: so as not to miss out... she could put it right now, on her credit card.." etc..She got fake tax calls as well. Often from East Asians cons who insisted on calling Mary "Sir"...Once, Andrea happened to walk in, as Mary was just going for her credit card to buy some garbage or other. She took the phone, got on the line instead of Mary. I can't repeat what she told the scammers, but it was a scream! After that, the phone had blocks on it, and other arrangements were made to see to her mom's safety without some tele-vulture trying to take advantage of Mary's anxiety and frailty, then steal from her by phone..yes, elder fraud is a serious concern. Anyone out there with an senior beloved, take note and make sure to attend to this for the older people YOU care for!

Funnily enough I got a call for the same thing two days ago... two calls before that warning me in a recorded message. The call came from a Canadian Province. The first message I got I went online and found CRA’s direct phone number and called them directly to make sure, and nothing was wrong with my account. Even I was really surprised that the number was routed from Canada so I was slightly worried I may have missed something in my taxes. To pray on elderly, who sometimes have no one to rely on and don’t understand that people can be calling you from India and routing it through Canada? Is there anything that can be done about this?

The *real* IRS does have power in some countries through reciprocal agreements with the tax authorities in those countries. I don't know about Australia, but at least with Canada such an agreement exists, i.e. the IRS pursues Canadian tax delinquents in the US and the CRA pursues American tax delinquents in Canada.
