Great review. I recently got an M11 which is great, but I think you’d be amazed at just how enjoyable it is to shoot on a Leica SL type 601 with adapted M lenses. A really good Voigtlander and a mint used SL could be yours for about €3000 and you’d never loose money. The Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 is a particularly good match for the SL as it is super fast, gives great subject isolation, but is wider than a 50. They also do a fantastic small 35f2 Mk II and a brilliant but bigger 35mm f1.2 my iii… just a thought
Hi Marcus, that‘s some great advice right there. I have shot the SL and SLS2 and really enjoyed it. Also with a summicron 50mm on it. I loved it obviously. And I will check out the recommendations for the lenses you mentioned. What is holding me back to getting an SL is, that I have a mirrorless camera with my Canon R5, and I am hesitant to get another to bulk up my bag. So here I am again, saving up for an M or a Q3, if they ever make one
Excellent video. And yes shooting an M makes you fall in love with photography over and over again - what a great way to put it. As others have commented video with the M line doesn’t really work - for now at least. I had the M240 with a video feature, clunky as hell. My M10 without video was much better. Oh yes to a Q model with a 35mm!
Nice review, Patrick. I have a M10-R along with a couple of Voigtlander lenses. It is a wonderful camera and I shoot with it every day. I do not need it to capture video. I agree with you that a Q3 with 35mm Summilux would be great.
Hey Patrick, loved the style of the video! Haven't tried the M11 yet but used a Q2 and a SL2-S and both are great cameras. I'm with you on the whole video topic. My wishlist would include a Mic Input on the Q2 so that I can use the camera for vlogging 😂. Let's see what the future holds. Keep up to cool videos 👍
I think you nailed it! I'm surprised you've had difficulty getting used to rangefinder focusing - to the point that you rely on focus-peaking. I don't fully trust focus-peaking. I think it's a given that if your M Leica comes with video or auto-focusing that either the body of the camera and/or the lenses are going to get bigger. Don't wish for those features. Leica listens to its customers.
Hi my M11 turns up today but I have had a loaner and liked it a lot. In fact, I went for the Leica Q2 but changed my mind after trying the M11. However, its a purest camera so video is a no go. The Leica M240 had video and it made the camera bulky.
Hi Graham, thanks for the comment, I am excited for you that you get yours today, so cool. And yes, the M240 is a bulkier cam. My goal was to try to find something in the camera that I really like and was missing, so that was video for me :-) - and the Q2 is awesome, but too wide angled for me. I love the Leica approach to not having to crop much in post, and 28mm is a bit too wide. so hoping for an update here at one point. Let me know which lenses you have for the M11.
Patrick ... you were doing so well until you suggested adding Video to the M11 ... up to that point I was convinced you had really understood the Leica ethos .... oh well ...
Hi Killian, I don‘t think that the advancement of technology is against the Leica ethos, otherwise we should talk about the wifi capabilities to share your photos directly on your phone, which I am pretty sure Mister Leitz would have disagreed to.
@@patresinger Hi, Patrick ... yes, that WiFi feature was something of a surprise to me also ... though not a thoroughly unpleasant one! I just think that the idea of an integral EVF is possibly a step too far and is potentially a spoiler in respect of the "M" shooting experience. The one thing I would really like to see incorporated into the M camera is built-in diopter adjustment ... it is a complete anathema to me to have to order and pay an additional £140 - £160 for a tiny diopter lens when it is already built-in to the significantly cheaper Q2, for example ...
@@MrKILLIANSMITH Agree! What I just love about the M Line is, that it hasn't really changed it's appearance much and that it has been the same mount forever. But yeah, the diopter is pricy af. Still super excited to see the brass versions of it.
@@patresinger Yes ... I have the silver M11 and a silver 50mm Summilux 1.4 paid for and on order at present. I had the silver M240 and 35mm Silver Summilux and a black 50mm f2.0 APO Sumicron previously but had a "mid-life crisis" and had flirtations with Sony, and then the Canon R system and Fujifilm systems ... still have an X100V ... but the M11 is a game changer for me and I will definitely stay faithful now I've had my "flings" with other brands ... good luck with yours and with your RUclips channel!
there are digital cameras and there is a Leica M. Once you get hooked no other camera is good anymore :D I own m10r, m10m, m11 and 35mm lux, 50mm lux, 35mm apo, 24mm lux. Funny thing is that all three cameras shoot the same way but each is different. For first combo I would suggest go for m10r or m11 and 35mm lux or 35mm apo. Than you build from there. It takes a bit at first to get used to it, but after some time most autofocus cameras will frustrate you as they will miss shots that you wouldn't with the M :D
What a line-up, wowser. I am very intrigued to get into the leica game, let‘s see how this year goes. My most important thing would be the size of the M-line, it is just tiny and gorgeous.
I appreciate the recommendation. My first Leica was an SL which I still love and allowed me to adapt manual lenses. This led me to where I am now with the SL, an M11 and 3 Voigtlander M lenses, the 21f1.8 which is fabulous, the 40mm f1.2 which is odd but wonderful for people in tight spaces and the 75f1.5 which I simply can’t fault. However the next step is obvious, a fast 50 and I was thinking about the Summilux 50 f1.4, but you recommend the APO… I’d really appreciate your opinion, cheers Marcus p.s. I live miles away from any Leica store.
I have one and could not be happier. As you say, it keeps you inspired to shoot, and that is priceless.

Hi Saverio, thanks for the comment. Shall we do a petition to Leica for a Q3 with 35mm?
You would get many people to back it :) On a different note if you get the chance to shoot some film on an MP do , it’s something else.
