- Welcome to part 10 of this Chesterfield Canal Restoration series. We're back in Staveley in September 2024 where we can see construction on the new bridge over the soon to be reinstated canal cutting. As well as work starting on the Staveley Waterside project. These are all part of the Staveley Town Deal and work is being managed by Derbyshire County Council and the Chesterfield Canal Trust.
This is the new Trans-Pennine Trail bridge that crosses at Lowgates Staveley on the former route of the Great Central Railway Mainline.
Since our last visit when a large amount of earth was being moved around, we can see the piers and abutments for the new bridge have started to take shape. The actual bridge decking is being constructed off site as we speak. We look forward to seeing some of the canal being built.
We also travel a short distance west up the canal to the Staveley Waterside project at the Staveley Town Basin. The new development of business unit fronting the basin and lock. It looks as though groundwork has begun and drainage and utility work is well underway.
Don't forget to look back at past videos to see the progess up to now on the Canal Restoration.

Another welcome episode on the ongoing restoration saga, Thanks. It's not easy to find much information on this from down here in NZ. Keep up the good work
Cheers Tony. And a big hello to NZ!!!!
Great to see some progress Paul, shame the railway went so recently. Good to see Gordo out with you
Yeah it's moving along at a lovely pace now.
Nice one with your wobbly dog lol😂❤❤❤
He's a character
Top man as always 👍👍
Cheers Andrew
thank you for showing me where l cannot go now it's nice to see what is happening at Staveley
Hi Robin. You're welcome
Wow looking good 😊
Making good progress isnt it
Thanks very much for this update. I've covered progress on the Chesterfield Canal a couple of times and it's great to hear someone else's take on the project.
It should have been poured by now
I might have a walk past tomorrow
@@WobblyRunner let me know what you see, as said I won’t be up until the lift but I’ll share any posts you put up
Great to see things happening on the restoration…totally agree with you on the looks of the building….
Going to be an interesting few months ahead :)
I've just read an article that the bridge is scheduled to be lifted into place on Oct 10th.
Indeed. Looking forward to it.
Hey Paul.
Thanks for the video.
Great to see Gordo. He’s looking well. Agree with another poster - Gordos galavants is a great idea 😃
Really cannot wait for you filming the canal reaching across the puddle banks !!
Thanks for your great videos
S
Thanks very much Simon. Glad you enjoy them. I cant wait to see more of the canal dug out and in water.
Can’t say I like that design of the office building either. It’s not the right place for that building.
I'm hoping it looks better in person. Hopefully there will be some nice stuff to compliment it.
It just needs a waterside cafe and amenities block, not office units, and at least make it look like an interesting building, modern buildings are so dull and dreary, dont make them like they used to
Hopefully there will be amenities etc added at some stage. Especially if more boats begin to use it.
Love a good concrete pour…. The form work looks great… there’s a lot of love there … for sure!
Paul, Thanks for the update! Since you asked, my impression of the Staveley Waterside development is that the building design isn't the best for the site. It looks from the rendering you showed to be a sterile modern box done on the cheap that won't draw people or add much of anything to a location that has a lot of potential. Hopefully I'm wrong, but it often seems the architectural renderings for planned buildings look better than the actualized reality. On thing that seems for certain is that time will tell. Cheers!
Cheers Scott.
Yeah it's too boxy isnt it. Hopefully some other more interesting stuff will appear around it. They are starting the framework soon, so we won't have long to find out.
Paul, thanks for this video, explains a lot. I now understand where bridge will be located. Although a member of Chesterfield Canal Trust and recipient of Cuckoo magazine, had bike ride past the works early July but couldn't make sense of alignment. Now clear and I plan another ride after bridge is open.
👍🙂
Yay!!! Gordo's back! You should do a little side-channel called 'Gordo's Galavants'. If it's any consolation, here in 'That There London' has also been dull, gloomy and muggy. Please keep us updated. I'd be tempted to ask for boat shaped buildings, rather than the concrete box in that picture. I mean 'boat shaped' as in like the bow of a boat pointing upwards so that the roofs are steeply curved and have a point (good for rainy weather).
Haha 'Gordo's Galavants'. I love it. If only I had the time for another channel 😄. The tragedy is, he'd probably have more followers :)
There’s a green portage on at Renishaw end now too so guessing they are starting on the canal soon
Im well overdue a walk down Renishaw
@@WobblyRunnerthat was meant to say portacabin! Surrounded by metal fencing. Guessing they’re staring the canal rewatering soon
