- At one point Nick noticed a silhouette of a black wolf by the lake, which stood there and stared at him.
Nick started to slowly back away, worried that the wolf might attack his dog.
But suddenly, his dog took off and rushed towards the wolf.

Exactly my thoughts....when i heard he died i was like ok...but when i heard how he died i couldnt help but shed a tear in anger...humans always manage to fuck everything up
yea bro they sadi that he was illegally shot that man who shot him should get executed for that n i was not even born till 2003 i was born in 2008 jeez this story is even older than me but ended after me
this story is exactly how dogs were domesticated in the first place.....one lone wolf who dared to be different, and who one day due to curiosity and the driving need to be social and a part of a clan or family, approached man... and the friendship began
Was just browsing the comments to see if this had been brought up at all. The Wolf was likely driven out of its pack for being different. Dogs are hyper effectionate as canines go, a trait that is out of place amongst wolves. Being willing to play on first contact with other canines displays this. Had an evolutionary scientist known of this case I'd expect them to have wanted to do a gene or DNA sequence of Romeo. I bet it would have shown a difference to pure Wolf makeup.
his black pelt is evidence of his hybridization with domestic dogs. looks like he got more than just that one trait from it.
@@lah67 . Wolves come in different colours. Both black, white, grey, sand, brown and mixes depending on where they are from.
What?! No one knows how wolves were domesticated.... but it likely wasn't a "special wolf" lmao. They were probably taken as pups by many ancient peoples. This can be done today. The wolves grow up distant but stay close to home.
Native American dogs were almost always chased out of the camps and stayed on the outside in a similar way. They were security and they would be eaten if things got hard for the tribe. So wolves were much more likely to be domesticated for these same reasons rather than to "be friends". That's kinda niaeve. Hunter gathers don't have extra resources to have pets just to love on, but for an animal that provides a security service... that's different.
Romeo was not a hybrid his mate was shot also they don’t live in clans they live in a pack mom dad babies that’s pack wolfs are social animals it’s not unique to dogs.

Animals have proven over and over again that they can be smarter than humans. especially politician people.
Animals are definitely more empathic than most humans.
I’ve run into a couple in the Bush where I live in Canada...they stopped and looked at me and carried on...they are huge but..I never felt they were a threat...they are busy living a life without humans....
I had a wolf trot across the trail less than 50 ft. in front of me while mountain biking on the Eklutna trail (just outside of Anchorage.) It didn’t even bother to look at me. The idea that wolves are dangerous is crazy. A pack can be dangerous if they’re starving or they can be dangerous when held in captivity (since their normal social structure is disrupted) but generally they don’t attack people.
Don’t get cocky. They aren’t Disney characters. If they feel you are a threat or they haven’t eaten in some time you could be in big trouble. Just be careful.

@Harry Munker we could say the same for humans.
Ohh my god that wolf must have been thinking before he died
"I trusted you humans whyy"
It's unusual that their very first encounter with the wolf was friendly. If he was separated from his pack then it's likely he was looking for a new one to survive. It's sad that the poor was just looking for a new family and was killed.
The lesson, never get too closed to humans and never trust them.

It's not all humans. just a few greedy ones who feel that killing an animal makes them more of a man.
close, not closed
No the lesson is.. never get wild animals to trust you I
This could happen they will start trusting everyone and think everyone is nice..
Considering wolves and dogs numbers and life expectancy, I say the smarter wolves were those that in the past decided to share their life with ours and give way to what we now call dogs.
Damn poachers, I hate them they're the symbol of greed and cruelty...
Maybe if the dumb people of this town hadn't made the wolf comfortable around people and dogs so much, he would have been more wary around hunters and campers, and maybe even poachers. And he would likely be alive today

@@w0bbl3r Agreed. I do understand the town folks' fascination, a wild wolf being friendly n' all. But the outcome totally underlines the danger that comes with with trust.
@@w0bbl3rtrue but still poachers that kill illegally is just not right. And the wolf was carefull with the strangers that he didn't know. And after 6 years every wolf would have trusted humans. He also didn't come to see humans, he came to see the dogs
@@electro13k54 No but what I mean is it wasn't just the poacher, or hunter, or campers, or whoever it was that shot him.
Sure they're mostly to blame. But when you see a magnificent wild animal, the worst thing you can do is hang around it and make it comfortable around people like that.
Considering the fact that seeing wolves near people is extremely rare, and that they are an apex predator, it wouldn't surprise me if what happened here was just a case of mistaken identity. The person or persons who shot him thought he was a threat.
It's still wrong, and of course it still could have been a poacher, which is just vile. But if the wolf hadn't been so tame with people, he likely would have not been seen by a poacher.
It's still a lovely thing to see him playing with the dogs. Truly beautiful. As beautiful as seeing the polar bears who come every year to play with that guys huskies.
But people, in their quest to make things their own, wanted the wolf to keep coming, and keep getting closer to them. This, I think, is what probably sealed his fate.
And that's just horrible in every way.
Killed with good intentions really.
It always seems when we make a friend of a wild animal, some human with no heart destroys that Animal. Romeo, reminds me of Luna, the Killer Whale, made friends with all he met, yet was killed for that reason alone. So damn sad.

Not a fair assessment. Wolves have to be aggressive as they fight to survive. Humans don’t need to be aggressive we have luxuries and don’t need to hunt to survive. Humans are just cruel in nature. Wolves aren’t mean because they are aggressive. Its literally survival of the fittest in their word. Humans have a choice to be murderers and worse and a lot do them choose to do so. It doesn’t mean every human is bad so stop taking it personally. The fact is that humans are destroyers. We use up resources and kill anything in our way. @Randy Danner true. I despise hunters and shooters of animals

RIP Romeo. The fact that so many heartless people kill for sport, it sometimes makes me feel ashamed to be human.😔
The thrill of the hunt is something we have in common with most carnivorous animals. Just because we don't need to, doesn't mean we don't want to. It's like a house cat or a some dog breeds. They don't need to, but they will still hunt, because it's their nature. Nothing wrong with that. I go fishing because I enjoy it. If I lived in the US I probably would hunt too. Though probably not wolves.
@@Seeric85 That you enjoy a thing, that it's a strong instinct or that domesticated animals do it far from makes the act not wrong or okay, though.
Using violence against others when angry or wronged makes many people feel good and is a strong primal instinct. The instinct towards sexual violence is arguably even more instinctive and natural to humans and our closest relatives. Hell, we have serial killers exactly because they're embracing the thrill of the hunt. We could go even further into the strong driver to hoard resources all animals have, and that would then okay theft.
I'm not trying to provoke, it's just such flawed reasoning.
Regarding the very animals you mention - housecats hunting for sport, a particularly strong drive because in the wild they are not in a position where they WOULD be full very often, is a real issue for ecosystems. Dogs are kept on leads to protect wildlife, especially when they have babies.
That they want to doesn't justify the damage. Instead humans encourage them to play chase eachother, or use toys, to satisfy that urge.
I'm not trying to convert you either, everyone is free to make their own choices. But stand for the choices you make even when they're selfish, don't excuse them.
@@Reicha I understand what you are saying, but there are some flaws in your arguments as well. My position is one of moral relativism, saying that there is no inherent good or bad, but that good and bad is defined by our human perception which is in turn defined by our instincts and experiences. That doesn't mean morals are meaningless though, in fact they are very important for us to function as a social animal. Why do humans and some other animals have empathy? Because it is essential to function as a group, be it a small family unit, a prehistoric tribe or a modern community. This is my basic outlook on morality.
Now for me to accept that recreational hunting is morally wrong, I would need to accept that it comes from a place of cruelty and in the overwhelming majority of cases that is simply not true. If a surfer gets killed by a shark, is the shark evil? No, it's just a shark. If a deer gets killed by a human hunter, is the hunter evil? No, the same principle applies, he's just a human. Going into the woods and hunting an animal is the way things are meant to be, especially compared to modern factory farming, where you would have a much easier time of convincing me that the perpetrators of that are morally in the wrong.
@@Seeric85
It isn't bad to hunt, if you're doing it legally in your own property. Doing it on someone else property where they may want those animals to roam or especially doing it illegally is wrong. Hunting animals as a sport and heartlessly killing them illegally are two different things. I'm sure that may be what they meant.
What other reason would so many people kill animals every day?
Why can't humans be as decent as this beautiful, gentle, tolerant wolf?
Because some people are legs of lamb
Because we are too rational to be decent
According to the story almost all the humans this wolf came into contact with were decent and cared about him. It's so easy to look at the actions of the few among us and apply that judgement to all humanity but it simply isn't the truth. I'm saying this as someone who has spent most of their life despising humans. On a side note I recently watched My Octopus Teacher, it's a beautiful documentary about a man befriending an octopus. I'd def recommend it if you liked this story about Romeo 😁

Bruh, they're stupid if you think animals don't have feelings. What I wanna know is how they think outside of instinct (like bears seem like humans in costume sometimes)
Think it's mostly oldee people who think animals don't have feelings. Possibly because some book about an imaginary old man in the sky says that animals exist to serve humans.. The world will be a much better place when some of them are gone... when the majority believes that science is real.
I would be careful. But I wouldn't fear it. I would RESPECT it. No I'm not trying to sound like a badass. If it wanted it could kill me. It could. But chances are it would leave me alone.
You shoot a wolf, and you're my enemy.
Agreed...predator hunters are vile, putrid scum.
wolves have always been my favorite creature. they’re constantly mistaken as rabid beasts and monsters who will attack you for no reason. and it breaks my heart that people think that way. they’re only trying to survive just like us. this story is truly heartwarming and heartbreaking. rest in peace, Romeo. the one(s) who shot your have a very, very, very special place in the pit of hell. rest well knowing you made a huge impact in many lives, and you were and still are loved.
have you seen the movie Silver Bullet.... very scary
You are completely correct, they are just trying to survive and so are we, so if I come across a wolf and it runs at me, I’m going to shoot first and ask questions later, get mad if you want but I would rather be alive with a dead wolf than dead with a fed wolf.
Not only wolves, pretty much every animal will not attack if they don't see you as a threat and they can be very friendly.
A good story always has to be spoiled by another human. What changed?
Wolves aren’t bad or as dangerous as we have made them to be - we need them for their predatory place in the food chain. Without them whole ecosystems have been brought out of balance.
BS
Such a beautiful wolf 🐺 that was an unexpected friendship between two predators
The worst thing on earth is a human.
I hate guns, the wolf was in the worst country with guns on the face of the earth. Guns get handed to their scum left and right under the pretense of freedom (to kill)!
What a great story! The roaming wolf! Romeo. What a good looking wolf! I’m obsessed
You know he was shot by someone who knew exactly who he was and just wanted an easy kill
for anyone who’s wondering, the hunter that killed Romeo, Park Myers III, was arrested but only had to serve a “330-day suspended jail sentence, pay $5,000 in fines, was placed on probation for two years, ordered to pay $1,100 in replacement fees for the bears and wolf, lost three rifles and had his hunting privileges revoked for two years.” so uh, DEFINITELY not enough from what he did to the poor wolf.
Isn't being able to hunt a serious thing in Alaska he lost that
Thanks! I was wondering and thought I’d check comments 👍🏼👍🏼
All that punishment for a wolf?
Servant Michael the wolf certainly did not deserve the punishment he received.
Hmmm...karma is a B !..tick tok says the clock
Coming from Australia i had no idea how big wolves are. RIP Romeo
Up to 200 pounds in that part of the world. On average North American Grey/Timber wolves are 140-160 pounds.
So is no one going to talk about the thumbnaill 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I just commented on that.
@@ronpalmer1371 oh
I hate to say it. I knew someone would do that. Thank you for capturing and blending the gifts he brought to your own life. True value.
Why those *STUPID HUNTERS* shot Romeo he was the sweetest wolf known to man (and woman and dog) CURSE YOU HUNTERS >:(
Of course he was illegally shot. Hope they found out who did it. That entire community deserves to know the ass that shot. The person that shot him isn't an ass because he hunted him; he's an ass because he did it illegally. They deserve justice.
Some individuals are emotionally handicapped. Then can not have healthy relationships of any kind.
I feel sorry for the wolf and people who enjoyed his company.
Wow! It appears that Romeo may be an example of when a wild wolf took the 1st step in the direction to become the friendly domesticated dog so many thousands of years ago.
So sad some prick had to ruin it for the locals that came to love him.
Actually it was an extinct species of wolf where the dogs came from. It has died off due to humans long ago.
🔥💖
@@akemisdespair Wolves and dogs still have approx 99% the same DNA.
@@victorrtalluto225 THATS BS. BIGGEST CAP IVE EVER HEARD 😂😂😂😂😂💀💀💀💀🤦♀️🤦♀️
@@akemisdespair Look it up. Why do you think it is so easy for them to mate and produce wolf-dogs? Biggest "CAP" I've ever heard? GOOF!

Simply superb, at last we are getting the message, we must co-exist with all creatures. Thank you.
Awwww... Beautiful story. Legends never die Romeo is a Great Spirit in Native Tribal World. Here We are Always in with Our Super Wolf Moon!!! I will call to Romeo tomorrow when I do my Warriorship ceremony
Let's just hope that someone doesn't see this and decide it would be a good idea to let his dog run out to play with wolves. As heartwarming and syrupy as this is, this wolf is an anomaly, a pack hunter that's been rejected or just left its pack and is trying to find some new group to be part of. Letting it socialize with dogs and get accustomed to humans keeps it from joining a real pack and having a normal life, and makes it vulnerable to exactly what happened to it. Wild animals aren't pets or friends. Best policy is to observe from a safe and respectful distance and avoid closer contact.
Words of wisdom!
I knew It would have a sad ending. I knew it was just a matter of a time before some scum bag came along with a gun!!!
I didn't realise how large Wolves were until side by side with domestic dogs.
Few breeds come close to the size of a true wolf.
Let’s not forget how closely related these species are.
And I KNEW you were gonna say a person shot him. People can be so ignorant and heartless.
@Dillon Brunschon You might want to simmer down a bit because you're completely wrong.
Dog breeds are not "species of dogs". And all dogs are subspecies of wolf. The interbreeding of dogs with other subspecies of wolves will produce completely viable offspring.
those other dogs looked so proud to be next to him
Did the killer get caught... the bullet could lead to evidence... hope it festers his soul
R.I.P Romeo ❤️🕊
RIP Romeo, 😔👊🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
now the nature (corona virus global warning typhoons tsunamis) take the revenge of all the hopeless animals all around the world my friend
I love my Border Collie....live alone, he is my only hug during this Covid debacle. A blessing and such a gift he is on so many levels....what a beautiful story....I hope Romeo did not suffer and Decoda and he meet again, won't that be a grand moment....
Border Collies are such wonderful, smart, and caring dogs. I miss my Brutus everyday.
Makes me miss my Canadian Timberwolf, Cheveyo.
The lab must have thought that he was meeting his great great great great grandpa times 10,000 years plus.
I got teary eyed while watching this video. Romeo if he's only alive by this time. Many would know that it isn't possible for human and other race of animals that can jive in harmony. Run free, Romeo. 😔
I hope the shooter was charged to the fullest extent of the law. Amazing story with a very sad ending. It's humans destroying everything...including ourselves. Truly sorry for your loss
This hurt me to my core! A clear cut example that animal relations can be so amazing, us included. Animals are honest 💯 percent of the time bc they operate on instinct. We are not honest creatures. We need to do better
They are honest and innocent, making them better than man.
Who's the animal now? Here you have a wild animal trying it's best to be tame and friendly..only to end up being shot by hunters (monsters )
Shoot the person who shot him
@Dillon Brunschon Did your mother dropped and hit your head when you were a baby, the tortoise species you mentioned are already extinct and many more present-day animals greatly suffers from habitat loss, trophy hunt, etc.
Next time do your research and STOP SPEWING SUCH NONSENSE 😡😠
@@kohakuizumi7110 Do some research yourself. Everyone with a brain understands the difference between poaching and legal hunting. Yes, trophy hunting is shit i agree with that, but habitat loss is due to deforestation and plantations and has nothing to do with hunting. Not saying all hunters are good or anything but he does have a point.
I bet 75% of the puppies in Juneau Alaska are half wolf!😂
Edit- I'd leave my dog in heat outside..love to walk around with Wolf/Pitt Bull mix by my side 😎 but don't worry.. I'd sell u all a pup
😁
So, the "hunter" cries when he thinks about that wolf but kills others... Strange.
Wolves like these were the ones that bonded with prehistoric man and became domesticated.
🌿〰️🦴〰️👃〰️👢〰️✨ 📜t totem 📀 also wolves? coyates ?wild dogs ? Hyena s 🦴 ✍️t also n bred n domestic 💫 success respect s to the alsation ? Germain shepherd also n trained that's 🖕t sence 🏙️ too 👢? 🦊
Something similar happened to me. I took my dog to a waterhole in outback Australia. A wild dingo appeared and they both went ctazy, running around playfully chasing eachother. It waa amazing. I caught it on videp camera, 3 days later my housemate accidentally taped over the footage. Really was a beautiful moment.
Wolves are beautiful and amazing creatures. So misunderstood.
They're not misunderstood, they're canine like our doggies, it's just they are wild and not domesticated though do have the capacity to be domesticated.
@@xenech I think he meant demonizing the Wolves through stories and movies etc
