Composing in a panoramic aspect ratio can be super super challenging, but it looks like it comes pretty natural to you - the composition of your shots are spot on and work so so well with the wide format, well done!
Thanks for this video. It’s an interesting inspiration for me, to try some panoramic film photos too, coz I actually already own a camera for that, which I haven’t used yet - a Fuji HD-P PANORAMA. It takes panoramic pictures on a normal 35 mm film frame, so it doesn’t require any special scanning process.
this was really fun! agree you are a natural at the pano format. i have a holga pano camera on back order for the same reason - they’re ripe for hacking with better lenses and $100 US, assuming it’s ever back in stock
A lot of people agree that the Contax TVS has a lens that’s less sharper than other Contax cameras (like the Contax T2). It’s probably a trade off for it being a zoom lens, but it’s still decently sharp. The film shouldn’t really affect the sharpness unless you use a high grain film (usually higher ISO). I really liked my TVS but I’m a bit skeptically recommending it after it died on me after a year (I made a video about it if you wanna check haha)
@@Bonsees righttt okay, thank you for the info. To be fair I’d be relatively happy getting a year out of it considering the price compared to the contax t2/g2. Plus the ribbon cable can be fixed from quite a few places online these days.
I don't really have an opinion about panorama in general. The only time I made one was when I was at Top of The Rock in New York City. It was dope because you could see Brooklyn AND New Jersey. But other than that when thinking about printing or Instagram and even for a website, I'm not so sure.
5:21 No, not more gimmicky than cropping digital images. The entire concept is to learn to compose panoramic pictures on the spot. It is a totally different thinking, because you select your position to accomplish the image in your head. Cropping in post, is the real gimmick.
I do agree with your sentiments and I do prefer to compose images on the spot. I think it just boils down into “wasting” the parts of the film that gets masked… like is it really panoramic if it’s just sort of cropped? Idk 🤷🏻♂️ either way, I like this camera
I simply don't see why would you take better panoramic photos with a $5000 camera? It's the aspect ratio that matters, and if you want brutally great resolution, you won't shoot film: Sony 7RIII is not that expensive and its image quality is stellar. It has no native panoramic mode, unfortunately. I've just bought a panorama adapter for one of my Minolta Dynax 7xi I have a 17-35mm lens, brutally wide, perfect for the (exaggerated) panoramas.
I didn’t say you’d end up with better photos with a more expensive camera. Or at least I didn’t intend it to sound like that when I said I *want* an XPan. It’s a want, it doesn’t have to be rational 🥲 Have you tried the adapter already?

The Minolta has excellent viewfinder for panorama. How is the contax viewfinder when shooting panorama?
It's pretty good, dark panels come down to mask the rest of the viewfinder when you switch to panoramic mode on the TVS

How many photos do you get off a roll, is it 18 ish off a roll of 36exp
These use a mask rather than using the full height of the negative so you will still get 36 photos
