  • I visited Superior, Arizona, on 11 October 2018 to see where this movie took place. What a cast! Sean Penn, Jennifer Lopez, Nick Nolte, Billy Bob Thorton, Claire Danes, Joaquin Phoenix, Powers Booth and Liv Taylor!

I saw U-turn in high school. There is a 45-second stretch of footage in the film that birthed my desire to move to the desert. The cinematography was incredible. It was sunset, and it showed various scenes from around Superior. The song from the score ("Old Family Souvenirs") was a perfect complement to the imagery. I had been in the desert for over a decade before I realized that it was those images that called out to me.

I know the scene you're referring to, that's awesome. U Turn had quite an effect on me too. A few years after I first watched it I started taking trips all around Arizona during the summer heat. Visited Superior, it's quite the shit-hole like in the movie but at the same time it's also very beautiful. Could never live in the desert but ever since I became obsessed with the movie I visit every summer it's a yearly tradition.

@@wendaltvedt4673 I spent the night at a little motel in Superior. I live over in Albuquerque and was passing through on the way back from Tucson. While I still appreciate all the foliage back east, I still love the desert. I'll likely be here until the end.

@@ions82 I stayed at the only motel opened in town which was the Copper Mountain motel. The first time I stayed there my stay was fine but a couple years later I stayed there again and it was like a crack motel, the guy running it was just creepy. I think they've since reopened the old Magma hotel. You should check out the Apache Trail it's not too far from Superior it's absolutely amazingly beautiful, very desolate like an old west movie.

Thanks for this video! I loved the movie and saw it 5 times in the theater when it first came out. I was always facinated with this filming location. Is the garage/junkyard where Penn's mustang was being repaired nearby, or was that built just for the film?

@@eunhwastevens Oh, I see. But I envy you. I always wanted to visit Superior to check out the filming locations. I figured I was the only one who saw the film and wanted to go there. Great job on the video, I really enjoyed it!

@@whosound I've visited Superior a few times because I'm obsessed with the U Turn. There's not a whole lot to do there but it's cool for a day trip to see where the movie was filmed. I even ran into the house Grace and Jake live in by accident while I was checking out the local botanical garden.

Unfortunately every sign of its existance wiped out by evil resolution copper mining company (which also plans to destroy the indian forest some miles eastbound by the way). The location was built by the movie crew include junk cars and maybe even the Darrel's house.
On Google satellite map there were two palms of Harlin's garage some years ago as the last sign. But these days even the palms are removed. There also was an old railroad more than 15 years ago where "Jesus is Lord" billboard stands it the movie.
In few words Harlin's garage was located just on the northest point of the main town's housing. It was really not so remote as portrayed in the movie and it was literally just a part of the town. So sheriff Potter with Bobby were just rolling around in the police car. 😄
I think the scene was alive just some years or even months after the movie was shot because of it's artificial origin.
p.s. I'm the one of world's biggest U Turn fans. Watched it around 50 times. I'm sure it's universe's best motion picture.

Who owns the badass house Jake and Grace live in? I know it's near the Boyce Thompson botanical garden I accidentally ran across it while visiting the garden.
