  • Monster Transmission Presents Curt's Corner as Curt goes over how to exchange the lever arms for the Detent or TV Cable Rod
    This process and principle will apply for the Ford AOD Transmission, Ford AODE Transmission, or the Ford 4R70W transmission.
    In order to change the linkage you'll have to change it from the inside of the pan. There are 16 different linkage arms offered for an AOD Ford Transmission. So there are a lot of variables, such as 2 wheel drive, or if it's a truck, or a Mustang, etc...
    If your transmission is built by Monster Transmission we will provide the specific linkage system that you request.
    To start the process you'll remove the pan, and for a little more room to work with the transmission filter as well. Then the transmission valve body is exposed and you'll be able to access your internal shift linkage system. In the linkage Monster Transmission during a rebuild will add an extra component to prevent the shaft from going behind the TV rod. Once inside you'll first remove the rooster tail which has an 8mm bolt. Then under the rod there is a 13/16" nut that you will loosen that will release the tension off of the shaft.
    Then a roll pin that fits inside of the casting of the case. This prevents the rod from sliding out of the case. You can use cutting dice or needle nose pliers to remove it.
    Once that pin is removed the linkage will pull out after removing that 13/16 nut that was previously loosened. Then you can slide the linkage out of the case. The new linkage will then slide over the TV shaft, and line the rooster tail up with the linkage. The 2 flat lands are equal on both sides so it could be placed up or down. Then tighten the 13/16 nut on the new shaft. Before tightening all the way, make sure the linkage is all lined up. If you miss the valve you won't have any movement at all. So make sure its lined up correctly. Make sure the valve and that the TV system is correctly attached. Then install the roll pin and tap it into place, not too far down though so you can remove at a later time if needed. Then there is a spring back behind the TV valve rod you can pull it around and rest it against a shift place on the valve body. Then reinstall the rooster tail tensioner.
    Then its re-install it and test to make sure all linkage works properly.
    Also verify the TV Bracket is attached correctly and springs back, then reinstall the transmission filter and filter gasket. Then last but not least the pan gasket and transmission pan.

    After waiting 2wks for a rebuilt AOD to come, it came, and yup, lever arm was 180* off. I took my old one out, but wasn't 1000% sure I could put it in the new tranny correctly, until I found your video. Thanks a lot. I appreciate the help. Now back to my Mustang.

    I'm currently in the process of putting a new transmission in my foxbody mustang.. I needed the gear selector off of the old transmission.. Who knew it was as simple as a roll pin.. Kind of felt stupid after that lol.. I neglected to remove the gasket.. I would have never know it was there lol. Video was informational and very helpful, thanks for posting

    For a roll pin that is down in the case with no projection, try using a small sheet metal screw into the pin to remove it. The pin does not fit tight. Very informative video.

    I had read, somewhere, that the valve body had to be removed to change the linkage. Once I got the pan off, I saw that I could get to the nut without removing the valve body. I found this video to confirm my plan. Thanks guys!

    I know this post is old but great video U had a question the linkage u removed that is attached to the rooster tail I finally got my transmission to shift out of first but I have a leak coming from where the nut mounts in the outside that holds the line pressure lunkages I thought there was a o-ring in there but didn't c it us there a way to stop a slight drip without removing that entire assembly

    • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  6 лет назад

      There is a seal that goes in there, but all you should have to remove is the T.V. lever which is on the outside of the case. If you need anymore assistance Antonio, give us a call at 800-708-0087.

    Got a 4r70w that goes into drive no matter what gear is selected, sometimes reverse doesn't move at all but only if you play it. Neutral is always drive, did the reverse clutches weld themselves or could it be this?

      The selector shaft may have came off the pin on the valve body. Try dropping the pan and check the linkage inside.

    I used this video as a guide to help me flip my selector lever (changing from column shift to floor shifter), but afterwards, now the transmission does not seem to engage "park" anymore, and the "reverse" lights stay on in P or R, vehicle only starts in N. What in the world did I screw up?

    • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  9 лет назад +1

      crazycracker289
      The internal linkage is not hooked up correctly then. Check back through it. Either the manual valve is not connected in the correct groove or your park rod is in the wrong hole...if you removed that part.

      Monster Transmission
      Here is what I found; the lip on the trans pan was stopping the lever arm from rotating all the way into PARK. Originally facing the other way as this trans came on a car with column shifter. I bent the lip of the pan a little and I think that will solve the problem.

    Can you guys do one on adjusting the GM (Alero, Cavalier) shift cable that attaches to this shift lever? It has that black housing and you have to remove a clip to access the adjuster portion. Not much on the net for that yet!

    • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  7 лет назад

      If you have a linkage arm like in the video you will have to remove a roll pin in the case to remove the linkage and access the seal. You will need to drop the pan to access it. Curt mentions the pin at 6:38 in the video.

    i have same trans 04 maruade i getting 2 codes po173 and p1740 do u think if i change my tcc solenoid in the trans that be my problem car cuts off sometime shifting from park to drive and o/d light flashes sometimes and when i take off i got too stay on gas to keep it going ..wat do u think....thanks

    • @MonsterTransmission
      @MonsterTransmission  8 лет назад +1

      +abdyfe The po173 is a fuel trim problem. The P1740 you can try a new lock-up solenoid if it does not work it is a bad torque converter.

    I've just sit my newly modified 351W and AOD combo down in my 1968 cougar xr7, my question is this. can someone post a picture of this transmissions gear positions from the outside, to get a side view. Cougars have floor shifter, so I use a rod. where is park, neutral, 1st 2nd? I will tell everyone thinking of doing this, giving me headache, especially driver side header, you are not getting a factory exhaust manifold in that space, it isn't happening. still working trying to find a header that will fit. Any ways, I would like a good drawing depiction my gear selection positions.

    • @MonsterTransmission

      The band could be the issue. Suggest checking the tv cable. Make sure it is adjusted correctly. If the TV cable is adjusted correctly then the next option would be to check for the gov. If you have a strong kick down though, the gov. is fine.

      Yes it does have to be hooked up. It wouldn't be a kick down cable but rather a T.V. cable and if it isn't connected properly it could cause your transmission to burn up.
