I'm sure you've seen that a lot's changed in those 41 years! The UFO was good, but was made to be an early rolling heavy oil ball (which would have trouble on drier lanes), whereas the Clone is more versatile but will struggle on heavy oil. Arsenal these days is much more involved then back then. Best analogy I can think of from 41 years ago would be an AMF Angle or Brunswick Edge vs a White Dot. You'd have wanted the Angle or Edge when you needed hook, but when they were drier the White Dot could have been more useful.
Why did you give it away if you rolled so good with it? I roll a 14lb ball and I spent $375 on the only known 14lb UFO ALERT in existence! I’m new to bowling been doing it for about 4 months but I’m struggling to see why it was so favorable because it rolled so inconsistent for me. Pro shop guy gave me an unusual layout I think because I’m inexperienced and wanted it to be more continuous for me but I think it ruined my expensive ball I could have bought 2 new releases for what I paid for the Alert. Layout is pin up but pin is probably 4” right of ring finger!
@@shanenorthrop1969 Hard to say without knowing what your PAP is, but if it's that far right of your ring it might have been some sort of short pin layout, which usually promotes earlier, smoother roll and a mellower but controllable overall reaction. You can always take the surface down with an abralon pad to increase the amount of roll up front. Where is the PSA at? (that's the third marking usually in a line from the pin through the CG) Actually, I still have the Alert, but USBC put it on a list of semi-restricted balls in 2022, banning it from the Masters, the US Open, USBC Open Championships and a few others. Plus, the PBA now has a National Tour-only rule prohibiting any resin ball made before 8/1/22. I'll still throw it here and there, but it's easier to have an arsenal I know I can use anywhere than to swap in and out.
Yeah, I try not to focus too much on whether I like or dislike a ball in my reviews. Very few balls are "bad". What's important is what they do in your hand and when that might be useful, so you can decide whether it suits your arsenal. I'm starting to find a niche for the Clone on flatter patterns where I need the forward roll downlane to control the amount of hook off the spot. On easier patterns, I just have other asym solid and pearl options (Blackout, Reality, Eternity, etc.) that I find more versatile.
I hadn’t bowled for 41yrs, purchased the UFO, rolled my high game (279). Gave it away and just ordered the Clone.

You are the 1st person I watched to test clone and not love it. And that’s ok. I love mine.
