Thank You - I loved listening to this conversation and am excited to look into more of Jonathan Shedler’s work-
I do want to comment on what was said about Gabor. As a person who discovered him shortly after his Ted Talk, has read a few of his books, listened to him in all the years since and also taken his Compassionate Inquiry short course, I feel like I have a good sense of his work. Gabor is talking about repeated/chronic emotional neglect with his words about leaving a baby crying, not an occasional being a human parent moment. I believe he would agree with the. “Good enough” parenting you spoke of. It was watching him work with people that I leamed how I spent too much time validating and empathizing. He is a brilliant healer (IMO) and laser focused on narrowing in on root cause and creating change from there. His teachings on how trauma isn’t always what’s happened but what didn’t happened that should have has been so insightful in my work as a therapist. Also, he has brought awareness of the links between autoimmune disorders/other diseases and trauma which is so needed in the mental health field- as is all of what is discussed in this podcast! Thanks again, I gained so much out of listening to you two!

Thank you so much for having Shedler on. I have followed him on “Twix” for a few years now. You really did such a fine and relevant interview with him.
PS Jordan Peterson certainly seems to have a cultish following esp among youngish males….joining forces with Ben Shapiro in political punditry is anything but surprising.

Especially for those who receive state health insurance, finding a knowledgeable, compassionate, and more importantly a passionate individual is incredibly difficult. Then they wonder why we have an epidemic of self medicating behavior occuring. The lack of good educated doctors are missing in the field because of the multifaceted layers in the politics surrounding, "therapy."

Lost my father last August due to the dreaded S-word and for some reason unbeknownst to me, my mentals have been at an all time low since. Jokes as a defense mechanism aside, I've been really struggling with whether or not therapy could even help almost on the daily. Thanks for uploading this - excited to listen.

But if your therapist needs a therapist, and your therapist's therapist needs a therapist... oh gawd! They're multiplying!!

There is some old saying about therapists being the most screwed up of anyone. They become therapists trying to figure why.

Has cbt ever helped anyone meaningfully?

It helped me in the sense that if I hadn't gone through CBT and realised how useless it was, I never would have been prompted to search elsewhere and find psychoanalytic therapy.

Dr. Shedler, I appreciate your approach on psychotherapy but what about all the people that would be willing to invest but are just not in a position (financially) to do so? I mean, is that not a problem if psychotherapy -actual psychotherapy, is only available to a specific portion of the population? How is that different from the profit-focused quick-fixes-methods and techniques mentality?

    Hallo.

Maybe the cause is the gut microbiome imbalance due to external environmental factors such as processed food, high stress social expectations, hormonal imbalances caused by childhood trauma that were never addressed. Why aren't labs, and blood work a priority before "therapy?" I am not a professional but with the research I have done, self advocacy, and attempting to get to root cause of barrier obtaining a whole self gut microbiome plays a big part in mental health. Not to mention addressing self medicating behavior, a symptom of past trauma, adding a society who has consistently stigmatized the behavior resulting in a fear conditioning. Labs are vital to a successful detox and recovery including preventing a relapse. Vit D is one that goes hand in hand with opioid use, fentanyl and methamphetamine use. So if nutritional, hormonal and gut imbalances are addressed first then detox, or any other step we may see a shift in successful sessions. That is if success is what we are all collectively aiming for.

with a sponsor like Kelly Ann Conway, how can this podcast retain a sense of integrity. Actually, I can't understand how Jonathan would align himself with anyone who would have Kelly Ann associated with it. Talk about severe personality disorders of the cluster B type and being will to sell your soul for a buck, some attention, and some political influence! This podcast is really an incredibly mixed message.
