I stumbled across this channel for the first time the other day and I must say, you guys are what I need after a long day at work. It's so fascinating, this world of hidden sounds that you show us. Keep up the good work👍
I should move to a bigger city. There are so many opportunities to record. I love this type of video where you show us the different corners of cities an the countries. Thank you again for all the effort you put in your videos and for the massive inspiration. Viele Grüße - Til.
You have such and inspiring and enlightening channel. Always a pleasure to watch. As ambisonics requires precise gain matching, I wondered if the fethead phantoms are matched in their output with tight enough tolerances for this purpose. Did you notice any problems?
Great as usual Marcel. I think the Rode NTSF1 always sounds great. I loved the part with the airplane (or was it a helicopter ?) went over. Great mic, but a shame it's so expensive. Why do I always choose hobbies that require a ton of money? Ha ha. Oh well, enjoyed that as always. No problem with the format at all. It's nice to see a quick "out and about" video, and probably much easier and quicker for Libby to film and edit. Take care.
What about using the rode with the X8 as 4x mono and reformat it in post as ambix? Or is the X8 not good enough since the mic costs more than 2x the price? (F6 is no option due to missing app for me at the moment - or is it really THAT much better (all issues including pitch are removed so its just about the pure recording quality)
Nice video again! What version is this of the FetHeads? Do you use same version for the Geofon? Also, are FetHeads needed on the Zoom F6? Isn't it independent on gain setting? Or am I misunderstanding this?
Great video as always! You guys make a great team! Pardon the gear question: were you using the K-tek mixpro with the Zoom F6? Im looking for a bag for the F6 and the lack of extra space/pockets for Rx/timecode box in the K-Tek KSF6 bag is disappointing but I do love the build of Ktek bag over the Orca F6 bag. The ORca does provide a little extra space for receivers timecode etc. Have you used the K-Tek Mixpro with the Zoom F6?
Hello again. I love the Road, and the Sennheiser Ambio, but I think for now the Zoom H3VR is about my budget. is there any way you could do a direct comparison with the H3VR and the other 2, maybe plugged into the F6 or Mixpre. I am aware that it will not be anywhere as good, but I looked on youtube, and the H3 doesn't seem to pick up anywhere as well with surrounding ambience, any views on this? Also I have no sight, so using the F6 and MixPre may not be easy at all. I'm currently using the H2N and I also got the H1N some time ago and started practising with that along with the Sennheiser Ambio Smart headset, which is the easyest for me to use because the iPhone has voice Over Text To Speach built in. It does however have terrible preamps and is not actually a good recorder at all... Thank you so much for all of your videos. PS: I just bought the entire all in one bundle, so thank you!
Love the videos. Managed to get a Geofón recently and love it! Have you much experience with dampening cable noise for your microphones? I have a pair of the mikrousi Pro's and wanted to try a homemade binaural recording but find it hard to reduce the small clicks from the cable bumping off my clothing.
Thank you so much and thats awesome you got the Geofon. Yes that’s a real problem with cable noise and I personally don’t have experience how to fix that from an engineer point of view.
Fantastic video !!! not sure if you need the fetheads for this though, those Zoom preamps are so clean and quiet! I use their other Fethead for the SM7B, works fantastic--- great product, even better than cloud lifter for dynamic mics.
Hi Michael! Thank you so much! The size and weight makes the FetHead just perfect to carry around. I looked into the cloudlifter and find it very bulky.
Does the nanopod still work as well as it did initially after several months of use? Even if I understand that it is used with care. (various noises, tightening problems, etc...) Merci
Great one as usual, folks! 🤗 A short Q: which stereo microphone (or a pair) would you recommend for someone with an intermediate interest in recording nature sounds on camping and similar trips? Thanks!
Hi Alexander :) Great question and we have the video about that. Check out the Audio Technica AT4025 or the 8022. Its a wonderful sounding stereo microphone.
What I coincidence! I was recording the same boat-docked-on-the-side-of-a-river sound with my Sennheiser Ambeo VR mic a few days ago. BTW, I'm curious how you got the F6 to display in monochrome @ 6:05. I've never seen that before.
Oh really?? We are two more weeks in Osaka! Let us know if you want to meet up! Also to change that, go to the display settings and change to night mode :)
@@FreeToUseSounds Night mode...interesting. I'll have to check that out. Even more interesting that you were using it during the day ;) I will be in Osaka later this month on the 26th and 27th. Let's meet up if you're free. I'm traveling to Shodoshima and "neko-shima" (cat island) to record some sounds so I will have my gear with me.
Thank you so much and yes they do. I need less gain and because of that I create less noise. When Im out recording at night, this really made a difference.
Hi Paul, yes you can but you can’t link the four channels all together . You have four mono tracks or link two stereo channels. But there are ways to create an ambisonic mix in post.
I'm new here but I'm totally hooked! This video in particular was great both for the audio *and* for the technique tips. Props to the video operator as well; it's great supporting material! Humour! Obviously, the Zoom F6 is to be preferred but I'm wondering for someone like me on a fixed income budget whether a combination of a Tascam 70D with 4 of the FetHead phantom pre-amps might not serve? I realize there is no linked gain feature and the post-processing is a bit of a chore but perhaps careful manual gain staging is viable. (Of course the folks at Tascam say it works a treat!) The 70D has a nice sound in the middle but less than great pre-amps particularly for this kind of recording as you probably know. In any event, thanks for your work and inspiration.
Hi Edward! Thank you so much for watching Do you have the 70D already? Because 4 FetHeads are almost $400 alone. The 70D is somewhere between $250 and $300. If you don’t have the 70D yet I wouldn’t but it all together and rather go directly with an F6.
@@FreeToUseSounds Thanks for this. Yes, I have the 70D but am resisting this approach, mainly because 32-bit audio seems like a requirement for recording that covers such a potentially wide dynamic range. It's probably better to sell the Tascam and put the proceeds into the budget for the "real deal." The question regarding FetHeads was simmering and bubbled over when I saw you using them with the F6. I'm assuming that is not completely necessary given the preamps on the Zoom but I suppose you can never have enough (flat) gain! Thanks again.
@@edwardnixon1782 Oh yes I think I would do the same. Sell it and get the F6 or even the MixPre 6ii which is really nice. You also assume that right. Its not necessary but I always like to try things out. Having one for the hydrophones or for my contact microphones is really great. This week we’re at the Bamboo Forest in Kyoto and let’s if they make a difference with the Schoeps and SD :)
DOOOOOODDDDD man that Rode NTSF1 is just on another level. I may have to stop following you because I am planning on spending to much money .>> HA HA> I think the F3 and the Rode NTSF1 maybe my new kit to develop.
F3 and NTSF1 are great but can't ever be used together. The F3 only has 2 XLR inputs and the NSTF1 uses 4 - one XLR connecter per capsule. You can see in this video where marcel has 4 FetHeads plugged in to his F6. The NTSF1 has what looks like one single cable but at the recorder end it splits into 4 XLR plugs.
Its a great microphone for sure but I’m so curious about the Sennheiser too. :) Make sure you get the F6 or a MixPre 6 that has at least four inputs! :)

Hi! I felt like it made a difference but nothing that would justify the price of 4 fetheads plus the extra weight.

These videos is the best type of videos you do!. Both gear, field recording and travel fits in one and the same video!
Thank you so much David! We try to keep it up! New video coming very soon :)
Hi. Could you please tell me how to record Ambisonic sound on Rode NT-SF1 microphone using Tascam X8 recorder ?)))
You have such and inspiring and enlightening channel. Always a pleasure to watch. As ambisonics requires precise gain matching, I wondered if the fethead phantoms are matched in their output with tight enough tolerances for this purpose. Did you notice any problems?
These keep getting more and more fun 😊
Thank you so much Christian! :)
Fantastic mix of great sound and video. I love Libby’s shot composition.
Thank you so so much! That means a lot!
I love this format Marcel. It brings me peace and inspiration in an otherwise busy world. Can't wait to hear the Earthworks when it comes!
Thank you so much! We tried everything to get the Sanken but it’s not possible right now. I think the Earthworks is pretty close to the CO100K

thank you for fethead (phantom - for condencer mics) 👍
without you I 'd never know it exists
Glad you found it!
I really like this format!! It is sooo relaxing and it is inspiring for me to!! 🙌👌
Thank you so much Linus!
Do you convert the AMBIX to binaural or what is the format of the audio track in the RUclips video?
Nice video again! What version is this of the FetHeads? Do you use same version for the Geofon? Also, are FetHeads needed on the Zoom F6? Isn't it independent on gain setting? Or am I misunderstanding this?

Hey Marcel! Did you ever get to test this mic vs the sennheiser ambeo? And if yes, what are your thoughts?
HI Vipul! Oh no I never tot my hands on the Sennheiser but maybe I purchase it next. The Rode is back in the US.
Interesting! I'm very curious to hear the fethead/non-fethead comparison, especially on 32bit recordings.
Coming soon! :)

Hi Melissa! Oh yes we have the H3VR. Its back in the US and whenever we go there, we pick it up again and make that comparison video :)
Marcel you think these triton would work with the clippy em272 and the audio technica 4025?
Hi! Yes that would for sure. You can reduce some of the noise from the Clippy!
Great work! 😀
Thank you so much for watching!

Great video :) sounds of japan
Thank you!
Hi dears , do you still have h6? How do you feel compare to x8 as a handle recorder ? Heavy? Better sound onboard mic because 32 bits ? Best!
I don't have this one anymore but we made a comparison video back in Turkey. You can find it on our channel.

Hi! Oh yes. The Nanopole is amazing. I have the same almost two years by now.
how do you think - what is better (less noise) - to connect fethead to the microphone, or to the recorder?
Good question. I think its the best to have it fit on the microphones if the XLR connector is a 3 pin.

Thank you so much and yes they do. I need less gain and because of that I create less noise. When Im out recording at night, this really made a difference.
Do you have any insight into why the NT-SF1 is so impossible to purchase? Love your videos!
Thank you Bob. I think its a supplier chain issue. The Rode needs very specific material and if only one piece is missing they can’t complete it. :(
Could you use the Tascam to record with the NT-SF1? I know monitoring would be off, but gains can be matched?

Osaka's takoyaki is one of the best in Japan!
We heard that but we don’t eat 🐙
Okonomiyaki also good without 🐙
