This is exactly what should happen from a psychological perspective. When you have someone who doesn't recognize the authority that's in front of them, either through their own choices/beliefs (like this defendant) or through mental illness (sociopathy / psychopathy) the proper course of action is to not engage them at all -- they should be relegated to an observer where important people decide their fate without their input, permission, or desires being considered. This minimizes and marginalizes their importance and begins to force them to accept that they are not in control. Judges, prosecutors, witnesses, and victims should speak about the defendant completely in the 3rd person, as if they are not there, and should not even mention their presence or importance. If you notice, this defendant became less and less talkative and much more silent as the proceeding went on, as it slowly dawned on her that she was no longer in control. This is how you defeat people who do not recognize authority -- you impose it on them with unstoppable will.

IF people were rational about issues where pride is involved it would be a deterrent.
Short version is that human beings refuse to assess things is clear manner when emotional. If judges said "30 more days for contempt you want any more?" I can guarantee there would be an alarmingly large number of people suddenly suddenly getting 30 year sentences because they were mad and in their mind "refused to bow down"
Effective judges know to say "go to jail for a few days, come back and then I will listen to whatever else you want to say to me". They have time to calm down, realize their mistake, and THEN spend all that extra time in a cell asking themselves "was it worth it?"
But even after time in jail sometimes people STILL double down... Even ones who are not mentally ill just petulant douchebags.

This was fascinating. The real world is so much more complicated than a TV show or movie. I myself would like to see every state impose a three or four strikes law regarding felonies. There’s a point at which someone with no remorse determined to “do their thing” must be stopped. A mistake or youthful lapse in judgment is different. Career criminal? Lock’em up.

Are you also willing to spend the money and time to make incarnation actually corrective instead of extremely destructive to inmates.
Let’s start with the simple stuff. Work in prisons paid at a couple dollars an hour instead a few cents so that inmates can exit prison with enough money to establish themselves?
Phone and email to a screened list of family and friends at cost rather than at 900% profit to the company who got the contract to provide them?
Access to a conjugal apartment every 3 months to spend s weekend with spouse and kids to give a reason to live for and keep families together?
