      As an industrial mechanic, i built one a few years ago.

  • @SciHeartJourney
    @SciHeartJourney 8 лет назад

    , I bought a $5 kit to make a Stirling Engine. It had a small rubber balloon, a test tube, test tub stopper with pipe, and some tubing. All I needed to provide was a metal coat hanger and a heat source. The most important part was a good set of instructions!
    I think it was worth $5 as I learned the principles of how a Stirling Engine works. I have my own design that I want to try. One thing I found astonishing was how quickly the heat transferred to cause the expansion/contraction that drives it all.

    • @Latheman666
      @Latheman666  10 лет назад

      Vivian Astridge Thanks! I use 3 ml syringes made out of borosilicate glass. Yes tube is of silicone rubber with fine copper wire as regenerator in it.

    • @MathieuBaesen
      @MathieuBaesen 10 лет назад

      Latheman666 why is the copper wire needed? And how/where do you connect it? (I have to make a stirling for schoolproject) any other tips?

    • @Latheman666
      @Latheman666  10 лет назад

      Mathieu Baesen The copper wire (I should have said copper wool) is not essential. It acts as a regenerator and improves efficiency. No connection, Just stuffed in the tube so that the air can move through it.

    • @MathieuBaesen
      @MathieuBaesen 10 лет назад

      Latheman666 Thanks for your quick response, I will try it in my engine. Another question, how do you fix the silicon tubo to the glass, glue?

      @peterlution 9 лет назад +2

      Actually I meant if you want electricity turn in to mechanical movement, you don't need to convert to heat first. It's a yes to your question, since Stirling engine can turn any thermal energy into mechanical energy.

  • @mikewelch8379
    @mikewelch8379 8 лет назад

    iirc sterling engines, or something similar, were common in pre-electricity days and did serve a practical purpose. A little model has little torque. A big implementation delivers more torque. All you need is fire.

      +diborth Unfortunately I don't have plans. But the only important things are:

      2. 90 degress phase offset between the flywheels.

      4. Tubing between syringes should be made from sillicone

    It's a sterling engine made from syringes. The needles could be removed as they serve no purpose except they clearly show where the engine parts were recycled from. If you put a candle under one of the glass syringes near the needle end, connect the two syringes together using a rubber oxygen tube, and spin the fly wheel, the engine will run until the flame is removed.

    There is some considerable renewed interest in the Stirling engine because of it's high efficiency and it's potential as a much more efficient collector of solar energy than photovoltauc cells. Combined with the much lower price of mirrors vs solar panels, such technology could revolutionize the solar industry and even the global economy.

    To be fair to your car, even if it may not be as fun, it does still fight/utilize high friction to generate a vector for a fairly large mass compared to just your bodyweight alone in order to allow you to transport yourself - something i think even a larger stirling engine would have much luck with doing without significantly more fuel consumption ;]

    I like the way you measure the rate of fuel consuption!
    Is all the noise due to friction?
    Are they gas-tight syringes (or fairly loose-fitting)?
    Does it require lubrication?

      Neal Pearson Thanks! The noise comes mainly from the play in the holes of the conrods. The glass syringes are extremely gas tight. I had to file away a bit along the piston so that they leak a little bit (so that the pressure can escape when heating up) Lubrication is not needed, but a little bit of graphite dust reduces friction even more.

    You should put a thermal conductive metal pipe instead of that plastic tube to act as a radiator.

    It's a miniature Stirling Engine. Was invented to replace the steam engine. Robert Stirling was the inventor.
