Paul as you know I also have a mk2 and what I would suggest is a full scan first then followed by checking the plugs and test the coils also replace the pcv valve and cam follower, change the oil to 5w40 as these like to burn oil due to badly sized rings from the factory and this helps a lot, mines been perfect since. Good luck with this project and I hope you get it sorted as I know you will.👍
Always look at the entry number on copart should be followed by an "X" showing insurance company entry if there is a "C" it means private entry and that is where dealers get rid of TROUBLE! Also look for outward dents that don't make sense someone has tried to make the damage look better. Crashes don't dent outwards, thats a man with a hammer!
In my youth, a car with creamy gunge inside the rocker cover was a sign of stop-start running when using Duckams engine oil! But then, it frightens me to remember how long ago Duckams oil disappeared!
We used to call them "ringers" . I got caught out years ago when I bought a Vauxhall Carlton sold as "stolen , recovered" . Every bit that was any good had been swapped inc axle , alternator, engine . Fortunately parts were cheap and plentiful back then but it still cost me loads of time. The crooks are still out there just under different guises.
They're a pretty good engine although that one may have been thrashed. I had one for 11 years and only had to replace the thermostat, pcv valve and alternator clutch pulley in all that time. Mine always has a little cream under the cap as well, used a little oil and coolant but not excessive. The car is still on the road at 16 years old.
What a great bloke, love the channel. thank you for letting peaple see what can happen at copart auctions, ive heard many stories from trade colleagues about doctored Vehicles sold by unscrupulous sellers via copart. Do as many checks as you can before buying peeps...
I think its head gasket....there is to much coolant in there, I think someone has topped it up to hide the low level 🤔 but then again it's very rare for heads to go on these engines
It is what it is as you say Paul. Just as well you know your way around a motor . I been in the motor trade since my teens . 63 now and bought a few damaged repairables over the years . I do purchase from Copart but always remember basically your bidding on a picture with no comebacks whatsoever. As you say always do your homework bid accordingly and if it seems too good to be true their is a reason for it. Look forward to your future videos on this knowing you will turn it around into a great car again.
Forged pistons would only be needed at "stage 4 ish " where you've already upgraded most other things - turbo, intercooler down pipe etc etc, and this car doesnt appear to have had that. Definitely head gasket or broken piston lands, possibly both from the symptoms.... Boroscope will reveal all....
Interesting project this one Paul. Will be great for us viewers, and I know you’ll enjoy getting into the depths of the engine. Look forward to finding out the real problem and the way it can be rectified. 👍🏽😎
Hi Paul good to see you back nice car it is a shame the car is not good but i think you will get it sorted out to make it looking and sounding better all the best to you and your family 😎👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🔧🔧
Sort the running issues get rid of rear spoiler refurb wheels in anthracite grey and polish her up will look nice easily said then done but hopefully you get it sorted
They suffer with thrust bearing failing I've done 3 this year matey I'd take the sump off and see the movement in the crack. The misfire could be due to a stuck injection due to the high pressure pump failing and the unburnt fuel end up in the oil and gives you the creaminess on the oil cap
Hope you sort it mate 2.0tfsi engines are pretty good as long as it serviced well I owned a s3 with CDL engine around 10 years never has any big issues was remapped and ragged. Regard the oil in the Cap I experienced this throughout the 10 years of ownership Its pretty normal mate ask any s3 or GTI owners they will confirm this, You will need to drive it to see it go away not just sat on idle. Couple of things I found was coils can fail on tuned engines and cheap to replace PCV breather on top of valve cover and Diverter Valve . Map sensor can go which can course issue with idle and maf which looking at yours is missing. Now there is one that can course engine to fail course knock slight slap is because your timing is out mate and just running it how you are doing can course further issue. It could be that your cam chain tensioner has failed and the intake or exhaust cam has jumped out of timing or correct positions and coursing it to knock stems a little, Cam tensioner case is located were your HPFP goes into. remove your HPFP and check the condition of the cam follower. If rattling in this area its a indication is cam chain tensioner is failed its is pretty easy to replace. You may have some luck and get away by replacing tensioner and chain set your cams back to its default positions. I replaced chain myself. And the cam follower multiple times car mileage was 190k when I sold All the best with it they are pretty easy 4 pots to work on. Do the oil pickup pipe once up and running that can course oil starvation if blocked or remove it and clean it. Regards forged pistons I doubt it TFSI with a cheap spoiler would not be forged you would see other mods if was forged not just Intake. Blue smoke is probably turbo. They do like engine oil but that is pretty common okay I lived with it 10 years. All the best Sir. Regards
I'm always very suspicious of unrecorded vehicles appearing in Copart auctions. Let's be honest if there are only minor problems it would have been retailed or sold privately, so you need to bear that in mind when bidding. As someone else said, this car was auctioned in March so why only mention it now? Have I missed something 👍👍
Interested to see this project... I have the exact same car, I've owned it for 4 years now and it has recently died on me. After having a garage checking i now need a new engine too. So it's sitting in my little private garage for now as I love it too much to let it go... Good luck brother.
Nice car paul and like you said will be great content . Funny enough I was bidding on white 2009 tt s convertible front end damage cat s at Wolverhampton on the 9th of may didn’t win it unfortunately. Also another thing to mention to people if a car at copart which is a cat s or n and has the letter c or p on the end of the lot number on the windscreen that is a private car I normally leave them alone good luck with the build 👍
Great video Paul! It looks like you have your work cut out with that project. This will be an interesting car with a massive amount of content ahead. Personally I am looking forward to the engine work!
I'll save you some time. Simply google the vin number and look for previous auction pics and results, if you find any, walk away. Cuz"normal wear" = photos taken from 30 feet away, zip ties on the inside engine bay and self tapping screws holding body panels together.
Sad that someone did this and a newby to co-part could of come unstuck, it will also be great to learn on how to assess and fix potentially various faults.
Lovely car and I can see in your eyes that you want to sort this. I hate it when good people get shafted , don’t copart mention engine light or show a video of the engine running ? I’m fearful of the head gasket as why would the original owner who showed it so much love suddenly give up ? Gotta be the head gasket. I’m looking forward to future instalments Paul. All the best chum.
Very nice car but full of surprises and thats indeed an bummer and a big risk if someone really don't have the know how for serten things, how to fix an car i am looking for to it Paul 👍🏾
I Did wonder if you intend to Fix the engine as is, or on the other hand you did mention building your own TTRS but at the end you'd put paid to that ! Good luck
Funnily enough i have just bought one from Copart i pick up on Friday.... fingers crossed but it does have damage but not too bad. How weird you have exactly the same cars as me, Mk1 TT , VW Golf GTE and now a Audi TTS.
Not doctored just it's a spares or repair car someone put through copart auction, copart sell salvage not fully working that's where car dealers sell fully working cars
In the old days, unscrupulous scumbags would enter a vehicle with 'catastrophic mechanical damage' into an auction. Kick a dent in the door and lose the keys? Encouraging those innocent bidders to assume they only have to fix the dent and call out a locksmith? But, oh no!
Paul , I’ve gone onto copart on my iPhone, there’s only one tiny pic of the cars on offer. Do you need to register with them to get full access? Thanks
There’s clearly the engine management light on in the copart advert …. Nobody to blame but yourself … that’s enough warning to walk away unless you’ve deep pockets !
I know money matters Paul but i guess your reasons outweigh the risks including the skills to put this together. i got all the faiths in you to give us much needed and missed contain.
Copart are a nightmare, I was buying from them in lock down as no one else was open, what a load of expensive junc, bought some cars and bikes, I had to do loads of work to even get my money back, never mind high fees and mandatory delivery, at the time, I wouldn't encourage anybody to use them.
copart used to be a reasonably attractive prospect but the fees are just ridiculous now, deivery used to cost just 60 now 180 or something. i did not renew my membership as they were not only getting greedy but the way they damage every car they handle but bouncing it along on thier forklift, even cars that drive, just infuriates me. Iave had cars off them with ripped fuel lines, dented tanks, bent shock absorbers, broken undertrays, damaged inner lips of wheel rims where they ram the forklift underneath, no respect for their clients.
Looks... well razzed by someone. Black badges and wheels would have been a turn off straight away for me. Don't these have PCV issues like the mk1 engines?
Nice looking car and great video to highlight the dangers of copart to other people who like you say without any mechanical experience could be in deep trouble.
Buying cars with only 2k margin from copart is no good. I aim for 50 to 65% of bottom book. Also that could just be remus tail pipes not a actual remus exhaust
Paul I’ve been watching for a while and there is nothing there that you can’t fix this is just another project possibly expensive but you’ll fettle it I’m sorry to say Copart has become a dumping ground for not just damaged cars but crap that dealers and private folks want shoot of That should of been advertised with an engine fault ,pull the engine out and look for a low miler with a breakers warranty but not from Copart ,chin up great vid as usual looking forward to the lift episode 👍👨🏻🏭

This is the only problem with copart Paul. The public can enter there cars into the auction. It should only be insurance damaged cars only.
How much would a replacement engine cost against the repair of that unit
between £1100-£1700 for a short engine
