Swanage Railway - "The Exchanges" Autumn Steam Gala 2018 - Highlights

A compilation of film from all three days of the Swanage Railway's Autumn Steam Gala with the theme of "The Exchanges"; marking the 70th Anniversary since the 'Locomotive Exchange Trials' of 1948.
Upon the formation of British Railways in 1948, locomotive exchange trials were carried out over the four main previous constituencies making up the new-found network: Southern Railway (SR), London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS), Great Western Railway (GWR) and the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER). The trials took place to determine the best practices used by each of the constituencies, with a vision to 'Cherry Pick' the best ideas in order to create a fleet of new locomotives.
Featuring three visiting engines, the star attraction came in the form of 6233 "Duchess of Sutherland" making its first visit to the Purbecks. For the home fleet, the weekend marked the return to regular traffic for Swanage stalwart; 34072 "257 Squadron", making its first timetabled runs in nearly 16 years.
The Gala featured regular 'Over the Road' running as far as the bridge over the River Frome - the current limit of Swanage Railway's metals - as well as a 'local' service running between Swanage and Corfe Castle consisting of a typical branch set. Also in operation, was a demonstration freight service, also operating between Corfe Castle and Swanage.
The event suffered heavily at the mercy of the British weather, as 'Storm Callum' battered the South coast, while the timetable over the gala slipped backwards each day.

The trees at 2:00 show how challenging it was! Superb shot of the Mogul storming under the bridge at 3:00. 5 coaches plus a Coronation Class hanging on the back is a fair old load.
