Yup, pancake was great. I had the pleasure of meeting the band after playing in a small club in Roxbury, Wisconsin. About 60 people there only. I went backstage and Roger Boyd was eating a sandwich. He was so cool!!
@@gogoyubari366 Undervalued I guess would be the better term. A very talented band without much commercial success. I never heard a bad album by Head East.
Saw them in June of 1983 at the old Rainbow Music Hall in Denver. One of the best concerts ever! The Rainbow is now a Walgreens Drug Store but every time I drive by I think of Head East and Big County (November of 1983).
For those of us who LIVED the 1970's, WE know the past CAN'T be recaptured. There's a BIG DIFFERENCE between having seen bands like Head East, Foghat, Ten Years After, Grand Funk Railroad, Skynyrd back then, and the people who go see(in the 2000's) a ghost of what was and go around saying, "I saw Skynyrd last night." No, you DIDN'T. When key band members die, or can't play anymore, IT'S not the same. I have to hand it to Robert Plant. He hasn't ever seemed to be too interested in making a mockery of what Led Zeppelin WAS and he's to be commended for that.
I’m sure these bands and their members who have passed on are grateful there’s not more fans like you purists who feel they should simply pack it up if someone dies. Of course the music changes. It’s art and that’s what art does. Guys still got to earn a living man. If AC/DC had quit when Bon died we would have missed out on a lot of music and millions of fans would never have seen them live.
I'm just glad some bands and band members from the 70s are still around and play gigs!! Sorry kids, but you missed out on the best music ever made and the best music that will ever be made!! It's not about studio trickery. Real music is what it's about and it can only come from your soul, heart, brain, fingers and your feet! If you are relying on studio effects to sound good then you are not a real musician or artist and your creativity is null and void!! :)
Like I lie to say: "back when 'music' was played by musicians, and lyrics were sung by singers." Compare it to the crap young people listen-to today. *smh*.
I can't believe all of the comments on here ripping on these guys. Sure it's not the original band but, man, they sound GREAT. Y'all are idiots. If I went to a Head East show in 2020 and they sounded just like this, I'd absolutely go see them again. I clicked on this expecting it to be terrible and, damn, I'm impressed.
This band played in my town twice. First time I got to hang out after the show with them for a little acoustic jam session. The second time they played at my local fair and the guitar player and drummer let me ride along and drove me to the gig. Most down to Earth rockers I've ever met and I cherish the time I had the privilege to share with them.
Yes indeed. They are very cool indeed. Met them and hung with them a few times at summer festivals here in WA State. And at the last show they played here, they didn't even go into the "green rooms" they had laid out, backstage. They had a giant bus and Roger had a sweet motorhome. Partied with the fans. It was truly unforgettable.
My BF’s band opened for these guys back in the 90s and I got to hang out with them before the show. They were very nice guys. No attitude. A year later I’m singing with BF’s band and we did this song! So much fun!! BF passed a few yrs ago and I now have another musician BF. Tried to get them to learn this song. Wouldn’t that be cool if I got to sit in on it?? I’ve sang with them a few times. I miss being in a band.
I remember seeing Head East at an outside concert in Dallas. Pure Prairie League was also there. And 2 other bands...right now i dont remember their names!! It was an awesome day!!
I remember seeing these guys at a small county fair back in 1979. Been one my favorites ever since. I don’t even know how many vinyl copies of “Head East Live” I’ve worn out since then.
I used to go to Ahabs Whale in Spokane WA in the early 80's to watch Head East. I was 18yo when I first saw them there. I've been going to bars since I was 17 despite not being 21. We used to hang from the trusses and swing our feet to this song. God im old🤯
Larry and Rodger Boyd were my fraternity Bros in Champaign in the 70's. John Schlitt wrorked in the kitchen. They were a great group of guys. I just visited the frat house after 50 years away, and we still had a lot of stories of the old days. REO played on Thursday nights about 3 blocks from our house!
Hello my Rock-N friends. Here's some Champaign IL. Trivia for you. Just the way it happened. I'M sure the members of Head East will agree this Crazy is stuff you need to know. Here goes. In late August, 1969 Gary Richrath from around Peoria IL. and I knew each other from hanging out at a music store called C.V. loyds. Might have been two LL's excuse me. It's been awhile. We parked right near each other got out went into the store Gary plugged a Les Paul into a I think Fender Bandmaster Amp, I plugged a Strat into a Marshall 100 watt 4x12 speaker bottom that had just came into the store the day before. We preceeded to break into a version of the Stars Spangled Banner cranked as lound as possible. Usually C.V. Jr. Ran the store and Gary & I were known for our young & crazy antics. But CV. Sr. Was there came running into the guitar area shut the amps off. Told us to put the guitars back & get out and don't come back for a week. (Why a week I have no Idea) As we were leaving I ask Gary what he was up too and he said he was in town because although they didn't know it yet he was going replace Fiorio aka Duke Tumato. As the guitar player & song writer for REO Speedwagon. I'll get to Head East in a moment just stick with me. Gary was 2 years older than I was but we both had the same Midwest guitar style. He taught me alot R.I.P. Gary. He said hey there's a jam happening down the street a ways Terry Lutrell ( Original Lead vocalist REO) he said Mike Murphy will be there (who don't be fooled actually created the melody line for Riding the Storm Out and sang it when he replaced Kevin Cronin in REO. For a short period of time. I'm writing this to clear the air on some Champaign reality. Kevin Cronin was not I repeat not an original member of REO! Thanks I just had to say it. Terry L. & Mike M. We're both as talented as Kevin not taking anything away from Kevin he's truly a talented musician. Now for Head East. Gary managed to do just what he was there for. He became the guitarist for REO. I had gone to California and ran into Irving Azoff from Champaign IL. Blytham L.T.D. booking agency with Bob Robert Nutt. He barely knew me but as we talked he knew I was one of the boys from. Illinois. I was there to jam an afternoon show at the Trubadore just filling in. It was then that I first heard the name Head East. Irving said REO and Head East were going places and he was going to put Champaign IL. Into Rock-N-Roll history. He said he had Linda Rondstasts. Misspelled sorry, backup band he's going to make them famous (The Eagles) and a whole lot more. Now knowing Irv. as we called him could sell a dead man a watch I believed every word. I had been in L.A. for awhile so When Irving told me even if he can't sign them somebody would I knew Head East. was going places. And they did. It might be only 1 hit but Head East is a part and always will be of Rock History. So to all of the boys from Illinois I tip my hat. Rock-N-Roll would not be the same without you. As for me I took Gary R's advice he gave me in 1973, never sign on the dotted line. Just make a good living at music and manage yourself then No one will own you. So I got lucky I moved to Colorado played 5 nights a week for years at the Ski resorts. Aspen, Summit County, Breckenridge, Steamboat ect. But I owe it all to my friends from Champaign. that helped me lock into the Colorado scene. Oh yeah I almost forgot Pork & The Havana Ducks LoL God Bless ya'll & Keep Rock-N J.D.

I don't see anything wrong with this a great song by a great band "HEADEAST" with load guitars, keyboards, drums, good singer and all in all a great reason to drink some cold beers and shots dance sing get drunk and screw RIGHT! What more could you ask for other than to be that young again like when you first saw this band do this song and all there other great ones for the first time. I,ve been a Head East fan since the 70,s, I live in the United Kingdom I read a review of Flat as a pancake bought the album & was hooked from then 2 this day, the original line up with the amazing John Schmitt on lead vocals was awesome but they have maintained that standard with numerous line up changes, great harmonies & great live shows unfortunately I,ve never seen any line up live but I will love this band 4ever. 🤟🤟😎
The first time I heard this song was in 1976 or 77. I was about 8 years old and we were at our summer cabin in Northern WISCONSIN. Ever since then, i have loved this song.i had the pleasure of meeting Roger Boyd in 1991 at a small club near Madison Wisconsin. I even joked sometimes about my goal in life was to own a HEAD EAST T-shirt.
I grew up in Creve Coeur, IL and Mike Somerville lived a few doors down ( actually with his brother Scott and his wife). I would go over to their house with a friend who was Scott’s brother-in-law. Mike would get up in the afternoon and break out a gorgeous acoustic Ovation and jam. Occasionally, you would get people dropping in like Gary Richrath’s ex-wife. Man those were the days in a small unknown town.

For all you haters this is 30 some years after this song realeased. Now face facts. Absolutely none of your current bee bop hip hop flip flops is even going to be a distant memory in 30 years
I actually helped John Schlitt load a couch onto his truck when he was moving to a new residence in Mt. Pulaski, Illinois...I believe it was in 1976. My family and I were visiting a family that used to be our neighbors in Carthage, IL and they just happened to live right next door to John Schlitt. That was a neat experience for me as I was 17 years old.
I'm actually from Mt.Pulaski originally. Know exactly where John grew up. His wife, Dorla, is also from MP. I went to High School with John's youngest brother.
Jolly Troll, best times, beer served in pint canning jars for 25 cents, quart jars for 35 cents. Bands like Head Ease, CCR, local bands Limosine playing indoors during winter and outdoors in summer. 75 highway was 2 lane to Topeka.
HEY PEOPLE WHAT UP? I grew up listening to these guy's, sorry to say, but we grow OLD our voices change it's a part of life. Just ENJOY, appreciate the gift give the vocals, music cz not everyone can do such. _THANKS FOR THE VIDEO.
These guys never got the credit they deserved. What a GREAT band. Flat as a Pancake is one of the greatest albums ever. Period.
Yup, pancake was great. I had the pleasure of meeting the band after playing in a small club in Roxbury, Wisconsin. About 60 people there only. I went backstage and Roger Boyd was eating a sandwich. He was so cool!!
Best concert ever I jumped on stage with them it was awesome
It's getting in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Bullshit they deserve as much as Zeppelin, Skynyrd, and Sabbath
My uncle's favorite album dude these dudes rock
this song was played at every party I went to in the 70's. I still play it at my splin classes. truly a classic
The break in the middle with just the drums and bass jars the hell out of my car, even the cops writing the ticket enjoyed it
🤣🤣🤣🤣
These guys and their live harmonies are super good
Too bad Mike isn't around anymore. He wrote the greatest hits for Head East back in the day. I hope your soul is resting peacefully.
And Schlitt
Damn how did they keep those vocals so strong after all these years sounded great
One of the greatest live songs that I never got to see live. Godammit.
Saw John Schlitt sing this on The Huckabee show a couple weeks ago. He can still sing this at age 72.
He is a delight to watch. He and his band have so much fun with it. He still has the pipes to hit it on the head dead center.
RIP Mike Somerville... Thanks for the Magic
They should have put more camera on the drummer doing the main singing instead of the clown with the blonde hair
Also RIP Dan Birney!
Mike was my neighbor great guy RIP
That pitch knob was a game changer back in the day. You better believe it, baby.
OMG. I wore out many "cassettes" and listened to Head East on a daily basis for years; xxox

This was such a great song to help me through the teenage angst of the 70’s. I was not alone.
I once threw a tire on a bonfire at a keg party in the middle of the woods while listening to this song.
No. You weren't alone. 😁
Flat As A Pancake was a must have in the album rotation!

This is an excellent performance. Tight and almost identical to the original. Super impressed
With the absence of Mike Summerville. The lead guitarist who wrote this song.

Still listening in 2020✌
Where did all the good music go?
John Schlitt (original lead singer) now sings this with The Jay Sekulo Band... pretty awesome....

Cruzing around in my 1974 Grand Torino Broughm! With a great sound system!
Those were the days....
Cruising with my '72 full size ford station wagon cranking this song going 22 mph through a residential street. On 8-track.
This was the last song played at a nightclub I used to go to. NEBRASKA😎
This is a very up-beat song about a near death drug overdose.
Saw them in Holton Kansas in 1976. Great concert
Jolly Troll, best times, beer served in pint canning jars for 25 cents, quart jars for 35 cents. Bands like Head Ease, CCR, local bands Limosine playing indoors during winter and outdoors in summer. 75 highway was 2 lane to Topeka.
