If you’re wondering why the swastika was blurred it’s because YT restricted the original upload. In some countries that symbol is illegal. Therefore I blurred it so I can share the video with you. Frustrating but that’s the world we live in
I quite understand. I never knew about this. Actually, by hiding history we are more likely to repeat history. Learning about history is not a bad thing. But I quite understand. Thanks 😊
I love seeing these videos showing pictures in 1944, and in the same location today, it’s almost like being on hallowed ground. As my mother once told me when I was a young boy, “If those buildings could only talk”.
From NZ. Thank you for your wonderful work. Just re-watching 'Band of Brothers' at the moment and your then and now photos and videos bring everything to life. As a son of an ex serviceman, albeit in the Pacific theatre rather than Europe, it is hard to comprehend what these men endured to give us the lives we have today. Without doubt this was the greatest generation! Lest we forget.
Excellent work. I had grandfathers in the Pacific and European theater. bringing the stories I remembers and your videos speaks to the quality. And as a WW2 intense history buff, you also bring much of the stories to life. Thank you
My father was in WW2 . I was born in 58, my father was at the hospital when my son was born. My father died when my son was 8months old. I told my son, I wish you would have got to know him, I know he loves you. We have a few home movies from family reunions. Daddy could get crazy with the best of them he needed too. I wish he knew that Russell grew up to be a good person and a patriotic.🇺🇸
@1:09, the 2d from the right is my Uncle Earl Hickman. He was 82d Airborne, 508th PIR. At least three in this still shot (it's actually from motion film) were 101st and the rest 82d. This is in front of Marmion Farm.
Loved this video... thank you for taking us back to a time which meant so much to us all. My Dad was British and served under Gen. Montgomery in the 8th Army in Egypt at El Alamein and Tobruk. All of these men are heroes and what they did gave us the wonderful free lives we enjoy today. These videos of then and now help us to picture what they endured for all of our sakes... I will always remember them all and be thankful... I think of my Dad so much and miss him even more when I watch these videos. Thanks so much for giving us poignant memories of a time long ago which means so much to us all...
So pleased I found this channel. Fantastic, This has always been a big passion of mine but i broke my neck back in 97 so most of these places are hard to access in wheelchair so this is next best thing.. Thankyou.
Welcome aboard and thank you so much. It can be very difficult to access these locations. I really hope you enjoy these videos. If you are interested in visiting these locations I’m sure there will be guides who can cater for everyone
Walking with ghosts. The sense of the movement through time and space and that one is still in that river. I was at a Bronze Age dig site (visiting, not digging) and I tried to envision those ghosts, still there, in their time...living, the energies of the Past still not quite dissipated. There once walls stood, pathways led you to place to place, lives lived there, complete lives, birth to death and all the experiences one has along the way. I love watching these before and after as it succeeds to a degree in being able to actually feel the breath of those that once walked by.
From the first image, framed in sunlight streaming on the gallant men of WWII, these images maintain their gravitas and power, allowing me to tangentially experience what the brave men of character, The Greatest Generation, endured to secure freedom throughout the world. There isn’t a day I am not filled with gratitude for their courage and sacrifice. Thank you, History Explorer.
A very interesting story, and the overlay of the Second World War footage over the location now, is fantastic, you can almost feel it, thank you for your brilliant work
Rob I have seen your work before and this episode is up there at the top , I raise a glass to the boys involved and identified by you , mum's elder brothers survived the western desert campaign ( Eigth army) so sacrifice in desperate circumstances as these men you depict resonate with me, thanks.
Thanks for sharing all that mate. As horrible as war is I really find WWI & WWII history so fascinating. I thought it was cool that you included the photo of Floyd Talbert as well
The pace, music, commentary and video/audio quality of this video are perfect. And if the walls if those buildings could talk can you imagine the stories they'd tell! Thanks fir mentioning the flag as I couldn't remember what museum had it. Ive linked up with a modern day vet of the 1st Infantry Division to trace the names on a capture flag I own. Hes friends with their divisional historian too. Hes that busy he still hasn't updated me but fingers crossed.
Great job on the video. This is what kids need to learn about in school. I have never been over sea. But, to be in these places and feel the fighting passion these Heros had. I don't think it would take much time, to get emotional about what happen at these points in time. Right where you stand. Cheers to all who serve.
Intensely evocative, haunting indeed to hear of the two hangings in now such pleasant a place. Extraordinary also to think that a nettle laden ditch has remained so for so long and no considered for development, leaving it to be an obstacle eighty years on.👏👍👌
The way you have done this is fantastic time has stood still how sad the farm is abandoned its just the same apart from part's over grown. From when dark 🌑 forces fell upon this pleasant land to forces of good that liberation and freedom came back again from the brave 101st and 82 eventually brought back the light after full on battle as the winds of time settle you might here a shout a bank or something catches your eye D.day the beginning of freedom for all of Europe 🌍 respect 🤝🙏 brilliant work
For someone with an intense interest (for many reasons) in all things military history, I am more fascinated in sites that are less known, ie. this location.
Bruce Middough of the 101st Airborne fought at Anzio, then DDay and Bastogne. In the 1970’s I was just a teen apprentice mason, and he taught me masonry. One day I asked if he still went hunting in the snow country. He said, “No, I haven’t liked snow ever since Bastogne. “. I asked, ‘What’s Bastogne?” He began to tell me stories … tanks, Germans, machine guns, snipers and more. I’ve seen his name in one of the accounts I read. After the war he became a policeman in Los Angeles, part-time mason, amateur geologist. I wonder if you have found other info about him. Bruce Middough 101st Screaming Eagle rip.
Your videos are fascinating and make me realize how little I know of our collective history. Might it be possible for you to make a video generally explaining how & why you came to delve into this history? You may have already done so - ? Thank you for your hard work! I look forward to learning more ~
I recently walked accross the Waal Bridge in Nijmegen, stood in middle and visualized the destruction of Nijmegen!!! There are many photos of the aftermath of the Allied Bombardment...
1:07 The paratrooper on the left with the grenades on his chest, next to James Flanagan who was holding the flag (2nd Platoon, C Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Parachute Regiment) was called Eddie Lambros and he was a Greek American killed a few days later.
Trying to suppress such iconography is akin to suppressing historical events that should be learned from. I think people watching should be trusted more, and make their own decisions on what they wish to watch. Doesn’t distract on what is another lovely video. Thank you.
Hi, I’m so impressed the work you’ve done! I love your videos. I wonder where did you find all those WW2 photos? Is there some database that is easy to search? Thanks!
good video but it's kind of stupid to blur out the swastika on the flag everybody know what it is. quit worrying about people feeling it's part history just like the Confederate Battle flag i'm not saying it's right it's part history.
When I originally uploaded the video YT highlighted the still pictures as breaching community guidelines. The video was restricted. I then had to blur the images. So frustrating
Are there organized tours accompanied with the photos? I would love to take a trip there or anywhere in Europe to see some of these places with the original photos.

A Battlefield bitterly fought over by US soldiers and germans. Now the Farm is peaceful, abandoned and the birds can be heard songing. Great vidio.

Thank you very much. There isn’t a database as such, lots of different sources. IWM is where I started off
@@thehistoryexplorer Thanks for your reply. How did you find the exact location and shooting angle? There must be a lot of hard work!
Parece ser de agora. Lindo e triste. Não dá para não se emocionar sabendo que tudo aconteceu mesmo. Não é um filme de ficção. Fantástico trabalho.
Thank you!
@@thehistoryexplorer vocês são magníficos! Abs
Saya suka video anda tentang tempat bersejarah apalagi tempat itu masih ada dan terawat
It really shows what they were fighting for.
I'm going on a Band of Brother's Tour sometime this year... hope to see this area
Outstanding, you’ll love it
Hello they are great men and braves good luck 🌹✌️❤
Can't believe they didn't include Forrest Guth because he sounded like a fictional character! 😂
All ths souls, before ,both sides😢😢
Just wondering. If the farmed is abandoned, who is maintaining the grounds, and the buildings/roofs?
The farmhouse is still owned by the farmer, they just don’t live there anymore
I do know, you have to forgive yourself before you can forgive anyone else. Sad but true 😮
Think that's Forrest Guth wearing the german helmet
It is indeed
Yessss 😢..sad of course..but it's good for our next generation.. let's them know...how crazy and cruel...name of the War...😮
War is hell
RUclips find history too difficult to face. I'm Jewish and am not so easily shocked as our delicate youtube employees.
I believe they have to take this stance as the flag/symbol is illegal in some countries
Just Google it. You will find there are a number of countries that have banned the display of the Nazi Flag. So don’t blame RUclips.
good video but it's kind of stupid to blur out the swastika on the flag everybody know what it is. quit worrying about people feeling it's part history just like the Confederate Battle flag i'm not saying it's right it's part history.
I know Richard it's very frustrating. Unfortunately I have to do it or the video cannot be published. I've explained more in the pinned comment
I am curious why you covered the nazi swastika but left it uncovered in the museum?
When I originally uploaded the video YT highlighted the still pictures as breaching community guidelines. The video was restricted. I then had to blur the images. So frustrating
Thank you for the update and your service. I greatly appreciate it.
@@thehistoryexplorer Restrictions like this infuriate me! They should program their bots to see content, not just images. Thanks for the video!
My FIL brought home a nazi flag from WW2, his whole battalion signed it!
