It was a sunny Saturday when everything changed. Emily had agreed to meet Ethan and Aurora at the coffee shop near the park, a place that had become their usual hangout spot. But as she approached the table, she froze. Ethan was holding Aurora’s hand, his face glowing with a smile Emily had never seen before.
“Emily! Hey!” Ethan called out, waving her over.
Forcing a smile, she joined them. The table was small, and the intimacy between Ethan and Aurora felt suffocating. Emily could barely hear their conversation over the deafening roar of her emotions. She wanted to scream, but instead, she laughed politely, her heart breaking with every second.
“I have some exciting news,” Ethan said, looking at Aurora, then at Emily. “Aurora and I… we’re dating!”
Emily felt like the world had collapsed. She tried to smile, but it wavered. “Oh… that’s great,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Aurora looked at Emily, her emerald-green eyes full of kindness. “I hope this doesn’t change anything between us. I really value our friendship.”
Emily nodded stiffly, excusing herself with a trembling voice. “I need to go-uh, something came up.”
She ran out of the café, her vision blurred with tears. Rain started pouring as if the sky was crying with her. She leaned against a lamppost, clutching her chest. The pain was unbearable. She loved Ethan with all her heart, but he was lost to her.
That evening, Ethan called her. She didn’t pick up. He left a voicemail: “Em, I hope you’re okay. Please call me back.”
Emily didn’t. She spent the night packing her belongings, tears streaming down her face. She needed to leave this city, this heartbreak, and the life she couldn’t bear anymore.
