  • Dumbledore's theory about the mysterious potion was completely wrong. In his quest to retrieve the Horcrux, Dumbledore believed that the potion would not kill its drinker, but instead, it would stop them and notify Voldemort. However, as it turns out, the potion was not only deadly, but it was also specifically designed to kill whoever drank it in a slow and painful way. While the potion was not immediately fatal, it was specifically designed to force the drinker to either go to the lake and be drowned by the Inferi or die of thirst. Dumbledore's miscalculation of the potion's true nature raises the question, did he really believe his own theory, or was he trying to convince Harry to help him? Yes but in the books when Dumbledore says it would not kill the drinker and later he corrects himself and says that voldemort would not want to immediately kill but keep the person there so either voldemort will be able to find out who penetrated his defences or the inferi would drown him (like regulus) also the movie didn't have much time so Dumbledore straight away drank the potion but in the books he first tried every magic possible he tried to transfigure it, take it out of the bowl and place somewhere else, change it's composition but nothing happened and if Dumbledore couldn't find out a way no one could , also Dumbledore knew exactly what the potion will do to him that's why he first made Harry promise that he will even force the potion down his throat even if Dumbledore is begging for death(which he did) , the locket was the most safest placed horcrux and without Dumbledore Harry would never be able to take it out(even if it was a fake they needed that letter to find who had the original horcrux.)

Yeah, but if the essence of Voldy was so vile, you would stop drinking it after a gulp. Not like you would chug the whole lot.
Unless you knew about the horcrux.
