Heber city is the most overrated city in America.
It is a magical bubble where the city planners of zoning offices think it's really funny to build houses over every square inch of available land. Why is that a problem? Because they won't build any infrastructure to support it, aside from restaurants and grocery stores.
The dwindling middle class is being replaced by Californians and other rich yuppies that make it hard for even Taco Bell or Walgreens to stay open. Anyone considered "poor" are now confined to a couple small trailer parks and hidden apartment complexes. All the other apartments you can see from the main road cost 2k+ a month.
There is absolutely zero things to do besides a run down bowling alley and recreational activities. That means everyday of summer the nearby reservoirs are crowded with literally thousands of people. It also means the ski slopes in PC are so absolutely crowded that the millionaires and billionaires decided they needed more, and started gutting the canyon between Heber and PC to make more.
The police here are overzealous, liars, bias, racist, corrupt and if you get on their bad side, you'll suddenly find yourself running into them often. (Getting on their bad side includes but not limited to, asking questions, being "different", being a mildly rebellious teen or young adult, making stupid decisions that don't hurt anyone, and much things that a normal human being wouldn't have a problem with)
Hebers most renowned quality is the ability for every single restaurant to overcharge and give only half the portions the price demands. The magic is people being ok with it and going back for more, it's really fascinating and should be studied.
Lastly, is the traffic. They have shoved so many people in this valley now that the only main street is now flooded throughout most of the day, even more so than SLC roads. It's so bad the city have been debating about stealing land from the locals in order to build a bypass road that would split the valley in half. If that was to happen, this valley would swiftly turn into nothing more than Park City 2.
This is one of the most overrated, corrupt, soulless, overcrowded and useless cities in America... but people keep moving here.
I guess looking outside to a pretty sunset with mountains is worth living in a nothing town like Heber to some.
Source: Me. 24 years living in the ups and downs of everything mentioned. Watching this quiet mountain town transform into a Park City wannabe dumping ground for the rich. If all that seems like a good idea to you, by all means, enjoy it while you can. Because it's gonna be a absolute mess within the next 5 years.
P.S. - If you're looking for rural areas but not far from normal city stuff, I recommend the surrounding areas around Brigham Utah.
