"DIY" USB Power Bank for 2x 18650 Li-Ion cells

  • Test and teardown of a PowerBank designed for two 18650 Li-Ion batteries. The sellers on Ebay call it "DIY" for a simple reason - it comes with no cells and you have to put your own 18650 Li-Ion cells into it. For just $1.19 including shipping its not so bad, but there's no fuse and no protection against wrong polarity.
    WARNING: Batteries and power banks can catch fire or explode! Risk of fire, injury and burns.

    In fact, at least for me, it didn't blew up when I inserted the batteries in reverse accidentally. The battery went smoking hot at the solder got melted. But I managed to take it out on time and when I checked it later, it was working fine for my surprise!!

    I like the DIY version more because you can put you own batteries instead of the cheap Chinese one with suspicious capacity:)

      I had some laptop battery with reasonably good capacity cells. So I ordered a DIY power bank for 5x18650 and it arrived just in time for Pokemon GO craze ;) Definitely it was more useful back in the day when phones had smaller battery and Quick Charge wasn't a must. Now I roll with Xiaomi Power Bank 2, which today has the disadvantage of not having USB C.

    I had that single battery one, and it blew up at the first run itself. I was testing it before making a video about it. I placed a fully charged battery and used the test load and bang! The chip went on fumes. May be a bad solder, idk.. But I didn't caught that on camera.

    Some of them drain the cells with no undervoltage cutoff, the there's no fuse or current limit just voltage dragged down and the tend to charge your cells to brink of fire...I don't like them with low prices for ready powerbanks as low as 5€ with 2x god 18650 inside. Thank you for your reviews

    I have one of these serving as a battery in a radio project I made but the batteries are junk. The power bank is similar to yours but the batteries are welded together and soldered in and I have the radio running directly off the 18650 cells and not going through the step up circuit which would interfere with reception. I saw these on amazon but I'm looking for one WITH cells. I have some westinghouse 18650 cells but they might not fit in this.

    • @pavelbires
      @pavelbires 5 лет назад

      I'm sorry for the late reply. You should put fuses in it (2) one between batteries and one between batteries and chip. That's because if one of the cells goes short, it will heat up other one a lot and may even explode (very small chance because batteries now have CID). And if chip goes short circuit or you put it in reverse, you won't destroy them.

      Just go to a local laptop repair shop and ask for a defective laptop battery and pull some good 18650s from it. You need to test for voltage first. I would pick anything that's above 3V. Their is a lot of videos on RUclips that shows how to get some from a dead laptop battery.
