Shinji Mikami, Part 2: An Eclectic Journey

  • This is the second part to our long portrait on Shinji Mikami, whom we've met for his 30th career anniversary, as one of eclectic and profile creators of the Japanese industry.
Following Resident Evil 4, Shinji Mikami slowly distanced himself from Capcom, joining Clover Studio, whose members will later create PlatinumGames. We will look back at God Hand, a unique action title, where we'll learn more about the ambitions Mikami had for it, before following on multiple project ideas that he had before finally creating Vanquish.
We also asked about Mikami's collaboration with Goichi "SUDA51" Suda, which started in the Capcom days on killer7, until Shadows of the Damned several years later.
Finally, Mikami decided to create his own studio, Tango Gameworks in 2010 in order to foster a new generation of game creators. We dive in his vision for the company in addition to the two titles of The Evil Within series, all the way to the upcoming Ghostwire: Tokyo, the studio's latest action-adventure title scheduled for a 2021 release.

Too bad the game was never re-released. Was never able to play it back then. Shouldn't be too hard to bring a Remaster since there is an audience and thinking how many way more unknown games got a Remaster. But it's also Capcom. Starting with the first Onimusha Remaster and then nothing.

I hope Mikami knows that God Hand, despite not selling well, has achieved a cult classic like status amongst people like myself. And if he doesn't know, i hope he's made aware of it through the feedback coming from this video. It's an absolutely stellar game that will forever hold a sweet spot in my heart. Unique combat mechanics that really break the mold of it's associated genres with a story and characters so cheesy, with dialogue and character interactions so campy that it becomes incredibly charming, endearing and hilarious. A masterpiece in it's own way.

Well, I think now more than ever people are able to just make that kind of games. The indie scene is full of experimental stuff that just wouldn't be funded by big publishers. The quality might be lacking in some cases, but the creativity and originality that some indie games bring to the table is amazing, just like God Hand.

It's really unfortunate that EA ruined the Kurayami/Shadows of the Damned project by lying to them and forcing it to be mainstream. In the end their meddling made the game sell terribly and was just a waste of time for everyone involved. I gotta be honest, i really didn't feel anything from the first part of Mikami's interview. However, this 2nd part feels a lot more personal and genuine. I love the way he talks about his failed projects (as products), but even now still loves each one of them. Nowadays where selling/being successful is, almost, the only point of interest of many game developers, listening to such a legend talk about both, his failures and achievements is not only refreshing, but could also give a lot of courage to younger gamedevs.
As always, the quality and care you guys put in each on this videos is so above the average content on this website that i'm surprised all this content isn't blocked behind a paywall, and i'm extremelly thankful for that. Thank you.

I'm late, but just wanted to say that Mr. Mikami is probably the best AND the most underrated developer out there. Everyone always talks about RE4, and while I love the RE series, other games by Mikami-san, like Vanquish or TEW1 are incredible gems, that somehow were not appreciated as they should been.
I'd like to salute to the Man, Shinji Mikami, for all the work and the courage to bring all those concepts to life. I still haven't played Godhand, but listening to its development story, I'm pretty sure its another gem - I love the rock'n'roll approach to creating games. There's definitely too much pressure to make super profitable titles in the industry - it all went full circle, just like movies industry, where in the 80s and 90s one groundbraking title was followed by another, and now only the seleted few directors are able to budget unique ideas. Still, I hope that people like Mr. Mikami will be successful in passing the knowledge to the newer generations, and in the meantime - create some new games for us!

Great documentary, I wasn't really interested by him or by his games, but I liked it. Excellent work on editing and music as usual, your staff deserves an oscar :D
Loved the journey, thanks for sharing. Congrats.

God Hand is one of the best beat 'em all the customization and the style is pretty unique! Unfortunately the world wasn't ready for it!
Shinji Mikami is very interesting! I wish there was another part or the video were longer to know more about him, the way he developed some of the games!!
But what's with the Japanese devs and that beard style! Mikami, Kamiya, Kojima!! It's seems like a thing they do when they hit 50s!!
    Thanks @Archipel

I loved GOD HAND, Japanese ver. came with soundtrack back than with PS2 and I played that songs every day when I was driving to School.
I wish they have sequel or transfer to PS4/Switch Digital to play.

This interview is so interesting. Getting to see a genius such as mister Mikami going through all this doubt and disappointment and anger is really touching.
We, as players, just get the final product but we don't get to realize how complicated the whole process can be for these individuals and their team.
This is all very inspiring, thank you so much.

After hearing about the pitch at 8:55 , I remembered reading an interview years ago with Mikami about his Father and how abusive he was. He recounted:
"I remember one night when I went to bed without doing my homework - he kicked me out of bed in the middle of the night and told me to go outside. So I did, in my pajamas without any shoes on, and he told me to stand in front of the car. Then he started chasing me around in the car, and he wound up having me run about five or six kilometers, all the way to the seashore by our house. Once we hit the coast, he drove off without saying a word, so I had to walk home by myself in my pajamas."
Judging by how mad he was that it was rejected, I can't help wonder if that was a more personal story influenced by his Youth.
