SailGP: Controversial Call? Late Umpire Decision?

- The KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix on Sydney Harbour provided us with thrilling racing, but arguably the most contentious moment of the weekend was when the Australian SailGP Team, helmed by Tom Slingsby, were awarded a penalty in the pre-start when they were luffed by the Canadian NorthStar SailGP Team, helmed by Giles Scott.
We take a look as to whether the decision was correct, using the UmpApp view and help from SailGP Chief Umpire Craig Mitchell.

If the canadians had continued without bearing back down, they would have hit the Auasie boat.
Was the call late?? Well, given the situation and the rules, they probably took a few looks at it to make sure. So, no. I do not imagine it was late, just well deliberated
The umpire helped you make this very unbiased video 😂
Yes he did by providing me with the UmpApp recording. Very useful and unbiased information.
@@Sail-Worldif it’s that easy/ obvious penalty on the ump app why did it take 28 seconds? 😴😴😴
Proud of you Tom. Ainslie would have been cursing and whinging.
No actual analysis on if the call was late? It seemed very late and Tom agrees.
How about looking at this call verses others?
It's clear the umpires wanted to double check this since it would have such a bearing on the race. All in all the call took 28 seconds. More than usual for sure, but not too bad for a double-check. Certainly much quicker than VAR in football!
Get my lawyer on the phone…….
The umpire spoiled a perfect reggatta, the was no reason for Canada to luff Australia as they had an open line in front of them and good speed. Luffing up only caused them to loose speed and then nosedive.
They could have easily reached Mark in front of all. This is not America's Cup Matching Racing.
That's a very funny take. You manage to blame almost everyone, apart from Slingsby, when he clearly just didn't react fast enough to the luff. It's a 3 boat race, of course there's going to be a bit of match racing going on.
@ Oliver, Canada let the British Team through the gap, no it was not a match race as while they were going head to head with Australia, the 3rd team punched straight through and Canada eventually lost the race, the regatta, the series, the superbowl! 🙂
@@oliverwhite6390 By luffing the Aussia boat, Canada dropped from 67 km to 59 km, nosedived and never recovered; they got to the 1st Gate in 3rd, which was game over for them.
It was like the Grand National in 1938. While trying to squeeze the favorite horse against the rail, the horse running in fourth was allowed to run down the middle, and that was the end of their face!
Dennis Conner tried to do that against Australia in 1983, but Bertrand disengaged and went for maximum speed.
SailGP is all about time and distance and not playing a luffing game, especially when there are three boats.
You don't see foiling Moths doing luffing maneuvers in racing!
I am sure questions will be asked in Ottawa this morning.
How did Canada lose the race by grandstanding in the start line?
@@cliveengel5744Canada had a 400m lead and blew it
