      It was quite a sight, and I had a very similar experience today. The flock wasn't quite as big though.

    Family, flock formations in the begining disintergrate in gathering as they try to land and then many realize they are not with their group. Confused they take off again. Next few days will be spent trying to find their partners and chicks. While many reconnect, others don't get back with the members of their flock.

    Heard the geese from far off, looked up to see which direction they were coming from. They were a long ways south coming towards Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Another group was coming from a little more to the east than the first group and started to join the first group going in a circle directly overhead of me with a lot of squawking and circling just like they were greeting each other. Another group from southwest joined the other two groups, circling and a lot of squawking. This went on for some time, my neck was getting sore from looking up and then one group after the other started to leave. The geese went in groups to northwest,north and northeast. I have never in my 74 years seen this before. I have asked other birdwatchers and no one seems to have observed anything like this. Sure would like more informative on this phenomenon---anyone out there??

      That's fascinating Rita. I think you were pretty blessed to be in the right place at the right time. Thanks for sharing that. Maybe somebody else will come along who has experienced this phenomenon and find your comment.

      I guess geese can easily distinguish their family members by cries. For humans it is a cacophony, but for them it is heard differently.

      I know, it was something to see. We have some pretty big flocks around here this year too, but not that big. Lots of flocks with 2 or 3 hundred or so. Sometimes they will all move in on a small lake, and there will be thousands, but then when they leave, they break up into smaller flocks. I'm pretty sure the wheat farmers hate them though. They do thousands of dollars damage to the wheat.

    • @ObservingNature
      @ObservingNature  9 лет назад

      +Bart Koolbeans
      There are many more of the Canada Geese, but they seem to move around in smaller flocks of 500 or fewer. They are everywhere it seems, though. Even in the city limits, on any large patch of green fescure, such as golf courses, and sports fields.

    That is a lot of geese. Our Canadian geese don't migrate far, they are the large birds we are familiar with. Too much water, food, parks and golf courses. Last week there had to be 1,000 on the high school football fields in our town.

    • @ObservingNature
      @ObservingNature  9 лет назад +1

      +Craig Arndt Sounds like the Canada gees behave about the same there, as here. They spread out in the summer, but have huge flocks in the winter, and start looking for wheat fields, sports fields, and golf courses.....anywhere where there is fescue.

    Have seen them like this comming into an alfalfa field like a crowded airport say 100,000 give or take. Took about an hour. As we shot 6 each they ALL jumped up @ once like a column of feathers and deafening squawk. We crept up alongside a 10 ft berm and the sentry goose never saw us until it was too late.

    • @ObservingNature
      @ObservingNature  5 лет назад

      That would have been something to see. There are so many of them that I guess that's why the limit on them is so high. They can do tremendous damage to wheat fields around here.

    In the uk i have seen flocks of wood pigeon in the region of 4000 How many geese do you think were in the sky when you filmed this

    • @ObservingNature
      @ObservingNature  5 лет назад +1

      4,000 of any bird in one place would be a magnificent sight. It would just be a wild guess, but I think I would have guessed about 10K for this flock, but that might be way off. All I know is that it was by far the most geese I had ever seen at once except in a national wetland area when they were migrating through.
