Those long zoom shots following the cars are something you don’t see much anymore, kind of gives a sense of the speed. Clearly they didn’t have as many cameras back then. The driver interviews are awesome too, people are surprisingly honest with their comments.
And Gary Gerrold's hair wasn't white, and Bruce Jenner...well we just won't go there... What I remember most about this race was the pit fire and A.J. nearly losing his arm in that bad wreck.
So sad that Mike Mosley is a largely-forgotten race car driver. As Gary Bettenhausen once said, "if Mike had have been with a decent team, we'd have all been running for 2nd". Watch his battle with Tom Sneva. That Eagle-Chevy had nowhere near the straightline speed of Sneva's March-Cosworth and Mike was giving him hell.
I know it sounds weird but I loved racing more back in these days when there were fires, severe accidents, etc. it was a risk to just be out there. Nowadays safety wise things are so much safer and it kind of takes that daredevil spirit away from it. Im not saying I like or want anyone hurt, but it made it more of a knifes edge excitement if that makes any sense.
The #7 car looks absolutely awesome. Love the paint livery too. Just wish that this wasn't so blurry. 1st time seeing this race. Thanks so much for posting. P.S. Nice to hear those V8s in Indy cars. A huge difference in sound as they roar by.
32:25 Yes! It appears they did just that. I remember watching this race on a small portable B/W TV with my Dad when I was 11 while my dad was watching me during office work on a Saturday. I remember My thoughts then were that there must be big fires in almost all races now after seeing Rick Mears Indy 500 pit fire on TV that same racing season just a few weeks earlier.
I heard years later that there was a controversy regarding who actually won the race. This was from a time when CART utilized a dedicated, human scorer for *each* car and they pressed a button each time the assigned car came over the start/finish line. Apparently, Tony Bettenhausen Jr's scorer reported the next day that she *might* have forgotten to press the button for Tony as he came across the line for a lap during one of the later caution periods. If true, Tony should have been credited the victory. We'll never know.
1981 was the final competitive year for the Offy. Jerry Sneva finished 12th at Phoenix in the Vollstedt Offy to end the season and an era. Vollstedt and a few others showed up at events in '82 but DNQ. I believe Vollstedt brought an Offy to Indy as late as '83.

Surprisingly honest because MONEY and corpo shit wasn't muzzling them.

Many thanks for this full classic race coverage.
These films are now historic documents and should be revered by all.
Dang Paul looks so young! He had the combover going on already😀
And Gary Gerrold's hair wasn't white, and Bruce Jenner...well we just won't go there...

37 cars starting the race. That is a packed field.
I expect that number to drop rapidly lol.
those '81 Eagle's were really out there. very unusual aero design.

I was a big Mike mosley fan since 73. And saw him win in Milwaukee, my 1st IndyCar race
That fire on pit road during the second caution period was insane. Never knew about it until now.

Motorsports still had a major pioneering nature to it back then - agreed on that point
Wonderful to see big vistas, all of the race track, the grandstands... all we see today is only close ups.

Penske Cosworth
Pancho Carter's only win.Tony Bettenhausen jokingly said "I was like a dog chasing a car,I wouldn't have known what to do had I caught him."
NBC had gone to commercial when Herm Johnson’s pit went up in flames. IIRC they dumped the commercial to come back to the track.

John Menard changing tires!
2:25:32 That was a tremendous save.
Hell yes it was. He was fully intent on keeping going too.....dude is a legend and one of the best to ever do it.
Crazy that there are still a few obsolete 4-cylinder Offy engines out there.

Daaaaammnnnnn. Where did you find these High Quality Indycar races?
I just found this myself. I think it's the version NBC posted on the Gold website several years ago.
The nose cam is very special for the time
ruclips.net/video/NUqN1xsZymc/видео.html
australia had a much clearer race cam in 1979
No it wasn't, F1 had been doing it for years prior to '81. Nothing innovative.
That crash AJ Foyt had looked nasty.
according to the doctors, they were considering amputating his right arm, thankfully he's still in one piece
Amazing....no catch fence anywhere except the front straight and only armco barriers on the outside. Dang...talk about pucker factor....
32:55
17:07 lmao...look at this guy holding the car steady with a chain and his leg while sitting on the back of the tow truck...lol. safety first!!
Who was the dill hole in the red shirt and the little camera? He managed to get in all the interview shots.
Lol...dill hole
I think he had the HOTS for Kaitlin, I mean Bruce. 😅
@@phillipalben7458 one of the two. ha ha
I noticed the same thing. Does he know he looks like an ass on tv😅
The fastest ever Nascar stock cars would actually keep up with this field.
Was Bill Whittington alright in his interview, seemed out of it.
He did seem like he had a concoction.
Never knew Kaitlin Jenner was a CART pit reporter
I just watched a video of the 1987 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and Jenner was doing pit lane reporting for that race with NBC.
Thats Bruce, before he went insane.
He drove IMSA cars for a while as well!

Did not recognize Bruce without a dress.
Unfortunately it’s in the wrong ratio
Wtf happened to Bruce...
If you ever catch on fire, remember to jump up and down and flap your arms like a bird.
Yeah when that type of hell is on your back, brother, you are in a panic immediately.
The fire was invisible and jumping up and down got you noticed. Since it was a fueler, he might have been drenched. Pretty scary stuff.
