I bought an old farmhouse built in 1540. In the sixties it was rendered in cement. The house smelt of damp inside. I had all the cement taken off and re rendered in lime. When the last foot of cement was taken off water was running out the bottom of the wall. It was also painted in Sandtex paint over beautiful Ham stone. That was sandblasted off and all the joints repointed in lime. Very costly but well worth bringing a beautiful Tudor house back to like. No more smell of damp after that. She could breathe. Keep up the fantastic work you are doing.

I grew up on the west coast (Vancouver) where moss is a big problem due to the fact that it is a temperate rainforest. Every year we would use a power washer and a pick to clean our roof (cedar shakes). If we hired somebody they would use a solution that killed the moss. What we also learned is that moss does not like copper so one of the tricks used is to use copper flashing high up on the roof where it will interact with rainwater that washes down over areas that could grow moss. It works to reduce or stop moss growth. Maybe some strategically places copper flashing may be useful.

Get yourself a safety harness, especially if you are going to lean out of the basket with a scythe in your hand 😅. Also, the cherry picker makes a very effective catapult under certain circumstances!

Try and replace the window panes, that need replacing from the outside, whilst you have that lift. I'm optimistic that you will do well at this project.

Thankfully, windows in France open inwards, meaning you can be stood indoors whilst replacing glass panes on the 'outside'.

Sadie first love ya'all. I understand Stan not wanting more water on the Chateau. On RUclips channel " Escape to the dream. Restoring the Chateau" Terry and Ash use a spray to.clean their Chateau. They only used the sprayer no heavy straight water. It did a beautiful job. Thanks for the channel. American tv sucks! All I watch is restoring and abandon Chateaus. And my fiance is a lot like Stan. He looks forward to your videos too. Anyway I won't take more of your time. Just know saving the Chateau means a lot to people in the U.S. too!

I followed the renovation story called "What have we DuNoon". A young couple, Claire and Cal accidentally bought Jameswood Villa in the UK and renovated it over 4 years. They lived outside of the building in a makeshift tent and used an old bathtub with water heated by a fire for bathing and relaxing. Cal had some skills, but they mostly educated themselves along the way. The had exterior walls that needed to have the lime replaced and after much research, they used sheep wool insulation in the interior walls so they could breathe and stay dry.

Also… Clearing the trees and brush away from the parameter of the Chateau will help with the dampness. Let the Sun get to the Chateau to dry it out. We had to do this with our cabin in the forest in upper Michigan. No more mould or dampness now.
