    One of the best reviews l've
    ever seen . One thing i like to with most of my reloading tools is polish. I would polish with 1000 grit sand paper the internals where the 0 ring rides. May need to break the edges on the metering tube and where it meets in the drum. Same with the internal of the drop tube . No catch points for powder allowed. Powders like IMR 3031 WILL BRIDGE OR LOG JAM in 22 cal drop tubes.

    • @TreeTopFlier
      @TreeTopFlier  9 месяцев назад

      Its a good idea to use some 500-1000 grit to polish the inside of the tube for smooth operation. To be clear, one of the problems in this is the inside mating corners of the cylinder and the extension tube have the corner edges broken leaves a v shaped notch that catches powder and the plunger O ring. It would be better if the corners were never broken then honed to match. Glad you liked the review and thanks for commenting.

    Very nice video! I bought one a few months ago and absolutely love this measure. I’ve only loaded about 500 .25-20’s and have never experienced the little brass screw loosening up. Was a little worried about it possibly becoming loose as it’s such a tiny screw. The drops are amazingly consistent even with IMR 4198 stick powder. The H110 and 2400 drop right on every time!

    Ditto on the Lyman Brass Smith stuff. I'm new and haven't actually gotten up and running. Been collecting brass for over a year now, and reading and watching RUclips videos trying to learn all I can, and figure out what tools and equipment I like best. I've done a ton of research, cost comparisons, watched tons of video reviews. I started out really open minded... figured I probably like and get different items from several different manufacturers. But the more researching I did on the various tools, I started to realize almost everything I liked best was from Lyman...with a few Frankford Arsenal items (like their hand deprimer, hand primer, wet tumbler, maybe the Intellidropper someday, tho I think I prefer the Lyman Gen6) I got the FA Mpress coax (cuz it was on sale for a good price) but what I really want is the Brass Smith All-American 8 turret. I've gone with Lee dies...38/357, 9mm, .223 and .300blk so far. Have enjoyed your other videos on making .300blk...well done and very informative...thank you...

    Great video and good tips! I'll be using some of these with mine. One thing I do is throw and dump 20 charges to settle everything. Then I throw and measure 10 individual loads to get a feel for dispersion. Finally, if I'm charging straight from the measure, I throw a batch of 10 charges and weigh that to fine set the measure. That averages averages everything out around my chosen load. Trickling, I just set to the high side of the dispersion so most throw short and a few are spot on. Also, you could grind that set screw into a T so you don't need the pliers. Just a thought.

    • @TreeTopFlier
      @TreeTopFlier  4 года назад +1

      I thought about doing the 10 throw total for the video. Like use 10 grains and 10 throws and see how close you get to 100 but I thought it would confuse some folks. But your right, that is a way to get the best fine adjustment when trying to land in the mid point of the dispersion. Thanks, for watching!

    @23:20 A common problem with Lyman products ---- screws working themselves loose. Used Lyman gear almost exclusively for twenty years & was pleased with low volume rifle rounds. Afterwards, high volume handgun rounds exposed a LOT of flaws with powder measure, case trimmer, handgun expander dies. And my two T-Mag presses spilled as many spent primers as they caught. The exceptions were a dial caliper, which I still use as a backup; and a magnetic scale that finally wore out. My advice concerning Lyman products is to avoid them. I use mostly Hornady gear but RCBS, etc., are probably just as good.

I've had as much as .4 of grain difference, which is a big deal when load at the top end of the load data. I find it sucks with extruded powder,cutting N 140 and Varget. I went back to the Lee perfect powder measure .it handles extruded powder better than anything on the market and does great with fine powder also always within a .1 . It does leak a very small amount on fine powder but I'll take that over inaccurate drops. Thank you for the great video

      @TreeTopFlier I'm still going to get the Lyman Brass Smith. I'm thinking of a way to correct the bevel in the drum. It is the same basic design as the RCBS , Redding, and Hornady. Maybe a Brass lapping rod or square ended drill. Can't damage the threads and bore of the drum. A seamless transition that does not trap powder is what is needed.

    Great, great review and pretty timely for me. Right now my Lee Auto Drum works amazing with Titegroup for my pistol loads. But looking for a powder drop that can come close for rifle loads that I can then quickly trickle up on a balance scale. I know. But that's how I roll. So have been going back and forth between the Lee Deluxe Perfect Powder Measure and this Lyman number. For my use close is all I need... but consistently close. The H4350 and IMR 4064 I'm currently using are definitely sticks. Do you have a suggestion? As always thanks for all these incredibly useful posts.

    • @TreeTopFlier
      @TreeTopFlier  4 года назад +2

      I dont think there is one size fits all in powder measures. I like the Lee design, including the Lee Perfect Powder measure, for stick powders. I haven't used the classic (fortune cookie 45LC did a review) but they are similar in design. The Lee offerings leak fine powders. The drum powder measures are champs with fine powders but cut grains making them jerky and sometimes inaccurate. If you want to charge rifle stick powder and trickle up to the desired load, a plain old Lee Perfect Powder measure would surprise you, its the best $25 in reloading. Im rambling, but to answer your original question, for the powder you mentioned I might give the edge to the Lee Classic because of the design. Again, I havent used it. My guess is you could set it for the desired load, go with the spot on's, pitch the highs and trickle the lows. Thanks for watching and thanks for staying with me on this journey.

      @240FP Thanks... I use the Auto Drum Powder Measure on my turret press for my pistol loads and I agree it really is amazing, especially with the Titegroup and CFE I tend to use. But I want to dump into a pan I can place on my beam scale and be close enough to just trickle a little to the weight. So while I understand the Perfect Powder Measure is probably not as accurate, I think it will do what I want. And I love that 20 dollar price.... ok 30 with shipping.

    Very well done video, but why don't you make the adjustments while the drum is in the throw position ? It would then have no pressure on it.

    • @TreeTopFlier
      @TreeTopFlier  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks! As for the position when adjusting... Mostly I'm doing what is most comfortable... raising to the throw position to adjust isn't wrong and may have some utility but its also awkward. Understanding your going to toss several of the first throws after and adjustment anyway, not sure its that useful. What is important, is to be consistent with your technic for consistency in your throws. Thanks for watching!

    Could you make a comparison video with the RCBS COMPETITION POWDER MEASURE, test which works best, price, economic, etc

    • @TreeTopFlier
      @TreeTopFlier  Год назад +2

      Sorry, I would have to buy the RCBS to make a comparison but I may still be able to help. First, these style powder measures work very similarly so the accuracy is also very similar. They all have a powder baffle that keeps downward pressure on the filling chamber constant. They all use a rotary drum with an adjustable metering rod to set the throw and change the volume of the metering chamber. The RCBS is a very nice tool but if you do your part with the Lyman, I doubt you will get much better accuracy. As stated in the video, the Lyman has an innovative metering style that lets one drum do the full range of powder throws, while the RCBS has to have two drums to cover the same range (pistol & rifle) So the cost of the RCBS for the same range is greater. Now, the RCBS comes with a micrometer style adjustment which theoretically makes it easy to return to an adjustment from a previous load session. Very nice option. The Lyman adjustment is much more crude. Once they are both set and locked in the results would likely be the same. If you get the RCBS as a combo (ships with both pistol and rifle drums) its about 3 times as much. Finally if your goal is to get great powder throws on a budget I would go with the Lyman. If you want great throws with the enjoyment and feel of fine machining and aesthetics where price is less of a concern then the RCBS may be a great choice. Using finely crafted tools has an enjoyment value all to itself even if the end results are similar. Hope this helps.

      I do lubricate them. I have been using Hornady oneshot gun cleaner (not case lube) It's a dry film that reduces friction but also prevents rust. I use it on the outer drum, adjusting screws and knurled parts to prevent surface rust. Hornady recommends it for internals as well but I had horrible luck with it. I use only graphite on the internal parts that come in contact with the powder. I wouldnt use graphite for the externals because it looks sloppy. Thanks for watching

      I replaced a lee Perfect powder measure with a hornady several years ago. The Hornady looks very similar to this lyman. I have not had any leaks with AA5, 7, 9 or H110. It does cut stick sometimes. Dispenses consistently within +/-.1 of grain. For the hornady i would recommend the addition of a pistol drum for cases smaller than 44 magnum, and the drain insert to easily empty the hopper. This lyman looks good but from what i saw the hornady might be easier to switch drums and have better metering inserts. Although it is 2x the price.

    I can't trust a powder measure, be it a manual one or press mounted. I always trickle up. Then again, I'm not mass loading lots of rounds. However, hand dipping then trickling up is a bit slower than I want to go. Looking at powder measures and I think after this video, I've decided on the Lyman brass smith. I think it's pros outweigh the cons. Using the thimble to get the plunger past the machined bevel is easy enough. The brass screw coming loose can be fixed easy enough. The weight range is perfect (no need to spend extra to get more parts). It's plenty consistent enough to dial in a load at .2 less than target then trickle it up. That should speed things up a bit. I built my own vibrating trickler from scratch for about a 10th what Dandy wants for the Omega 2, so between the Lyman and that, charging cases will go much faster.

    Isn't that RCBS made by cast iron not machined ?
    the biggest change is the powder holder is half the height as others and if you have say a Hornady powder holder like me you should have realized you must keep the powder more than half full to get consistent load weights. If my Hornady is never below half ways my loads are always bang on or at most + 0.01 more which I can live with that shooting a 223 @ 200 yds.
    I just loaded 40 rds. and 30 were 25.2gr. and 10 were 25.3gr.That I can live with :)

      @TreeTopFlier  Год назад +1

      The RCBS as well as others is cast AND machined. I tend to use the larger PM's for larger cartridges too. The lyman is great for smaller ones like 223 and 300 blk.

    how does this one compares to the lee perfect powder measure, or lee deluxe, ( ignore the price tag )

    • @TreeTopFlier
      @TreeTopFlier  Год назад

      The Lee perfect powder measure is awesome and probably at or near the best at long stick powders. I wouldnt buy the deluxe, it is functionally just the same powder measure as the PPM...maybe better adjustments but mostly just less plastic for people who are bothered by plastic parts. The Lyman is very good and kinda my go too because it just works and its easy to use. The major advantage the Lyman has over all the Lee powder measuring devices is it doesn't leak really fine powders like the Lee measures do. Fine powders migrate out of the cone shaped drum on Lee, a design flaw for only these type powders. The vast majority work just fine. Hope this helps.

    What do you use to clean your grease off the brand new powder measure?

    • @TreeTopFlier
      @TreeTopFlier  5 месяцев назад

      I like acetone, brake cleaner, carb cleaner or alcohol. Careful of painted surfaces, plastic or rubber parts.

    How about using silicone spray instead of graphite grease?

    • @TreeTopFlier
      @TreeTopFlier  Год назад +1

      Havent tried it. If I was going to try it I would probably put some on a screwdriver or something like that and dip it in powder to see if a fine powder sticks via static. The graphite is good because it resists static cling.

    If you have the RCBS and the hornady why thin one ?

    • @TreeTopFlier
      @TreeTopFlier  5 месяцев назад

      I had the Hornady first then decided to get the Lyman. Later someone gave me an older RCBS from an estate. I dont need that many but sometimes its nice to leave them set for a certain job.

      I would say ball powder is easiest to work with but mostly it isnt a problem. I have never found a load that caused me to struggle with that area of the plunger travel.

      @@TreeTopFlier Hi there,
      Thankyou kindly for your reply. I believe Winchester star ball HD temp stable is the way of the future for power measure machines achieving accuracy with low grief for new bees like me.
      Recoil is my next mission after buying the lyman .The Falcon strike oil recoil pad looks good for my 300 win mag 15 pound rifle with 175 grain mono lithic copper hybrid projectiles tumbled in Boron Nitride powder . Hopefully aiming for 11 pounds recoil max after medical diagnosis.

    so which powder measure is best Lyman Hornady or rcbs

    • @TreeTopFlier
      @TreeTopFlier  2 месяца назад

      They are really the same because for the most part they function the same way. Its my opinion that the Lyman is probably the best value in part, because you dont need to buy different drums to change volume. Some seem to work better with different powder types.

    Can you mount that on the turit? Wouldn't that save a move?

    • @TreeTopFlier
      @TreeTopFlier  Год назад +2

      The threads are the same as the turret so that part would work. There would probably be some clearance issues with the other dies, not sure. The real issue is the added weight on the turret and drive system. These are heavier than the auto drum powder measure.

      Awesome to hear. Thank you very much for the reply. I have one last question as I'm looking to buy a new powder measure. In your opinion which is better, the Hornady or the Lyman powder measure? @@TreeTopFlier

    • @TreeTopFlier
      @TreeTopFlier  5 месяцев назад +1

      Honestly, they are both great. The Hornady requires the purchase of a second drum to cover pistol charges where the lyman covers both with one drum. So, the Lyman is probably better value. If I was going to only charge large magnums I would favor the hornady. Hope that helps.

I have stopped before and then restarted when life settles down. I always look back to see who requested them and try to make contact. Thanks for your interest.
