Loockx (7th on this stage, 6th in GC) also kinda fits the story. His first full road season, coming over from cyclocross. No real big results at either road or ccx, but suddenly emerges at these one week .Pro races. Also got a 4th place on an uphil sprint in Hungary, could've top 10'nd the GC if he didn't get caught behind a fall in the peleton on the Queen stage.

Double used to ride for my current team in 2019/20 and rode for the sister team MGKVis in 2021/22.
I lived with him for a year in 22 and he was always such a nice humble guy, even though he was riding for a conti team doing WT watts.
Genuinely one of the nicest lads in the whole pro peloton, and one of the better climbers too, I’ll never understand why Kometa didn’t take him to the Giro this year.

I love the fact that late-bloomers is such a standard concept in cycling. It is very possible to find your best form around 27+ or breakthrough! In Football for example its all about the first glory days and then having to fill in physical gaps with experience, whereas in cycling it is often the other way around where you grow tougher and more experienced

I never rode at a competitive level but I've watched the sport for 40+ years and coming into the sport at the WT level around 22 or so and then coming into GC top form around 27 used to be pretty standard but lately (the past 6 years or so) we're seeing these young lads that are 19 and 20 that are real GC contenders. It's never been that way. It's really turned the sport on its head. 27 used to be a pretty standard age for a rider to come into the best years of their career. It makes me wonder what will we see from these lads when they do hit 27. Will they be even better or will they be in their "twilight" years so to speak. By 27 - 29 will they be put to the side as new young talent comes into the sport? We don't know yet. It's yet to be seen. I'm not really sure what to expect
      Cheers

Top lad is Paul. First met him when he made the podium at the 2019 British Hill Climb Champs. Belter of a ride from a young guy and his ambitions were clear. That wasn't his breakthrough ride of course, but guys like Paul are important for the young kids to look up to and see a path, like Hugh Carthy before him. He's a good follow on Strava too!

I noticed there's many competitive riders here so I wasn't going to bring up this subject but since I saw your comment I thought I'd ask. What's your take on these young lads (Pogi, Jonas, MVDP, WVA and others)? These unbelievable feats of strength and endurance? I'm interested in hearing your take on it. All natural or not? I have my beliefs of course but I'm asking to hear your thoughts if I may

@@kennykaniff they are all superbly gifted… yet they have the luxury and privilege of high altitude training camps, hyperbaric chambers, team physios, team doctors, team scientists, sophisticated data, specialized dieticians and diets, etc etc which I don’t think is equally accessed throughout the contracted riders on a team… of course the suspicion of using banned substances or unknown substances is always a possibility, especially considering how the older doping experts always seem to be associated with these teams or actually play important roles like “director sportif”, etc… so based on the fact that large budgets are at play, and only winners are remembered in history I believe there are definitely some form of chemical/pharma/mechanical assistance that is used/employed by these top talents to enable them to produce superhuman results that eclipse those of the doping era cycling… but everyone is guilty of enormous talent, suspicious preparations and unbelievable performances… that’s part of the allure of watching cycling… be well, be safe on the roads

Pogi aside, Storer riding himself into the top 10 on GC at the GIro was the ride of the GIro for me. First year for Tudor at World Tour level, not the leader, no dedicated GC support form what I could see. Absolutely break out ride imo.

C'mon, Storer was well established climber before the Giro as well... Best climber + two stages at Vuelta 2021, 2x overall at Tour d'Ain, podium at Alps, 2x Top 10 UAE, Top 5 in mountain stages at Tour 22, he's been good for years...

@@aarondcmedia9585 I just wanted to say let's not make unknown neopro out of him. To be honest I expected him to be even a lot higher in GC. Tudor signed him as leader for Giro because of his good results in last three years and he delivered what was expected. Rubio had worst results then Storer in his career and at Giro he finished a lot higher, why isn't he the ride of the Giro for you then 👀?

" Tudor signed him as leader for Giro "
If they signed Storer as lead for Giro:
      1. why isn't he wearing #181 number?
      2. On the Tudor site itself he says “I am here to win a stage, not for the general classification. Giro is early in the year, and I usually do better towards the end of the season, but I am coming with good form and the preparation went smoothly.”
Methinks you are making stuff up, no point in engaging further. As for Rubio vs Storer, it's team + rider, as I already mentioned. You really want to compare Movistar + rider to Tudor's first GT + rider? Really? Don't make me laugh.
