Awesome buck Jeff! Congrats man. I used your methods this year, mock scrapes, water holes, hunting high value days, using and leaving zero scents. Hunted 4 times and killed a 4 year old. Thanks for all the great videos! They truly have helped a lot of folks become successful.
I love hearing that so much Shawn...really appreciate you letting me Kno...and others on the channel! So happy for you! This stuff is pretty fun, eh? Congrats to you and THANK YOU!
I started following your RUclips videos in early October, and truly took to it like a college study “buck hunting 201”, as I knew the 101 basics but, boy did I learn a lot from you. This year I took many of your practices into the woods with me, and I got a really nice 8-pointer with a bow on Oct25th morning & had many opportunities after the pre-rut. I just wanted to send a thank you, as you were apart of my success this year, and it means a lot to me. 🔥💪
One of my best scent tricks is to put old spice in a scent dripper where you don't want deer to go. Had a place where people were shooting across the fence on me so i fixed them up.
Funny you mention Old Spice. One of the most successful whitetail hunters I know is Bud Benjamin. He bags at least a couple mature deer every year. When asked what kind of hunting deodorant he uses he replied "Old Spice". Not that it attracts deer, but as the video says, it is much more important to hunt the wind. And he an expert at hunting the wind.
Congrats nice buck. I shot my biggest buck morning of November 4 thanks to your advice. Been watching and reading your books for 3 yrs now. Success each year. You changed the way I hunt and my success rate. Can't thank you enough
Jeff, I started deer hunting this year, have had 2 all day sits and one afternoon sit. Haven't shot at anything yet, but pulled back on a great 9 pointer yesterday, but he jumped just out of range. With your videos, I have learned so much, and have been tracking several big bucks. From having nothing in May, to 3 stands, 2 food plots, and some knowledge to hope to bring home a trophy and meat. Thanks so much from Southern Illinois
Congrats Jeff! Awesone buck! Thank you for what you do. I love your channel. I appreciate the level of education that you provide to all of us. It's great to watch people kill big buck on television but we don't learn anything from that. I've used a lot of what I've learned from you over the past few years and this year I was able to harvest my largest buck with bow. Thank you again for what you do and what you provide to all the hunters that are looking to get better about scouting and hunting mature bucks. I arrowed my buck the day after a very windy/ snowy day.
Congrats Jeff 🏹 beautiful buck. Glad to see success for someone that is always giving advice and helping others. Your advice helped me arrow my largest buck to date in central Ohio 2 weeks ago today. Very appreciative of your channel 🏹 🦌
Same situation here with me! Also in Central Ohio and Jeff's advice got me my biggest bow buck on public this year! Nick, were you hunting public or private?
Same here! Oct 27th, my little 40 acres is producing again and i have not even made my habitat improvements yet, just changed the way i hunt based on Jeff's advice
Nice buck Jeff! Heading to a 114 acre farm I lucked out on to hunt in the morning, got great videos and pics of a few bucks. This will be my first rifle hunt in over 10 years. Can't wait. This channel is all I watch anymore lol, really has helped alot. Still working on eliminating my old bad habits, thanks a million brother!
Ahhhhh Congradulation Jeff!! Beautiful Buck. And see there was no regrets on letting those other Bucks walk earlier this October! Excellent future seasons ahead of you. And you still have Gun and Muzzle to go. Most people want to grow up and be like Mike, well I want to be like Jeff!! Great Job Coach!
Heard this over 15 years ago from a guy who shoots a lot of big bucks. He just uses cover scents. Trys to make himself invisible in the deer woods. Adding other scents creates a lot of problems with big bucks he said. Your videos have really helped. Thanks.
No bashing here, I fully agree with the points you are making. Often state that until we learn how to fully control the scent of our breath we are spread fully vaporized scent downwind with every breath. What so many don't seem to appreciate is that the cloud of moisture we see on cold days is also there on hot days even though we don't see it and every one of those vapor droplets is loaded with the scent of our breath which has the odor of everything in our body. Thank you for the honest informative videos.
Jeff,i totally agree your strategy is THE best,Even ozone machines emit a scent ,it too is out of place in the woods and a buck that has survived 4 hunting seasons knows any foreign smell means DANGER!!
Congratulations on a great buck Jeff. I also shot my buck on November 5th. I shot mine in the evening though. It was a nice 9pt and my biggest bow buck so far. I do use scent but only during the rut and it has worked well for me. Thanks for all the great and helpful information I really use alot of the things you talk about and it really has helped me figure thing's out. Now if I could just figure out how to control those swirling winds.lol
Jeff you rock. I love watching your videos. I have been sharing them with my friends and they are getting hooked too. Thanks again for all the awesome information.
Love your videos. I've been a big fan of this channel for a couple years. 1st time leaving a comment. I've been forwarding these to my dad and uncle. So, you have two more followers there. Beautiful buck, congrats! I've stopped using scents, and really been focused on wind and weather, per your videos and books! Harvested a buck on Halloween, my 1st oct buck. Thanks for what you do, has helped me a lot. Happy hunting!
No scent has always and will always be the deer hunters best friend. Your statements about this should be heard by every person that is a serious deer hunter. I remember being 16-18 yrs old and purposely sitting with my wind blowing towards the bedding area thinking bucks would smell the deer scents I was putting out and come in LOL. It NEVER worked out
I like your way of thinking!! The more simple we keep things going the better!! You’re making me think about things I’ve never thought about, thank you!! 👍
I always thought that walking out in front of my setup to put out Tinks or something seemed like a bad idea because of spreading my scent around. I was always told it is a must. So, I did it for years. I live & hunt in South Eastern Nebraska within 30 to 40 miles from Omaha where the hunting pressure is really high. I have only seen one yearling buck come up & checkout the scent I put out. Maybe mature bucks don't like it, maybe it was my scent being spread around while putting it out. Either way, no more of that. It is my 11 year old sons first deer season and I want to provide him with every advantage I can. Thanks Jeff for making these videos!
Hey Jeff. I just love learning different perspectives and techniques from you. And watching what tips you have used to yeild sucess in the field. I also really like that you talk about hunting in MI. I tend to use scent but have witnessed deer bot come in especially when bear have frequently been there too. My dad is some what of a hunting and fishing fanatic. He has things he has picked up from here and there... one of them has been the importance of using scent. In fact the year i got my first 8 pointer i forgot to put scent out and got up in ladder stand. I reached in my pocket to grab my glove and felt the scent bottle. I leaned forward with the bottle and dripped some on my ladder rungs and i watched it splatter and disperse into multiple smaller drops. A couple hours latter while i was twisted 170 degrees to the left as i was watching where a young deer that went from in front of me, to under me, to way behind me into some dark cover. As i sat there with my gun pointed behind me to the left, and my knees pointed to the left and torso twisted left as well I sometimes used the scope to look in the tall grasses over that way for horn. As i sat there waiting, twisted and listening i heard a noise straight out to the right of me. I sat and listened and it slowly got so close i had to turn my head around and look down at the noise. Funny how a mose can make so much damn noise. This time it was an 8 pointer and he had to have gps for my scent as he was 20 feet from my ladder and still coming! After he came a bit closer he stopped. Then he backed straight up and quartered away. I quickly stood up and rotated to the right without moving my feet. I set up and to my luck he turned broad side at maybe 25 yards and headed towards my dripper. It ended well. I was so happy to bag "the big guy". Problem was my dad got an 8 pointer a bit bigger while sneaking into another area around the same time. With gut piles in the area we planned to hunt the next day at our backup stands. My dad is in his 60s so he is slower to get going in the mornings. So he had me go in the long way before dawn and he would sneak into his stand about 150 yards away from mine after he gets up and gets going. I sat up early and randomly was able to shoot a 4 point at about 9am. I just sat after it ran behind me somewhere and I waited so happy to tell my dad i got 2 bucks now. Something that even he usually dont get to do and i never before had done and it was only the morning of Nov 16 in MI. Just think I finally beat my father at hunting... He did a good job helping to teach me. So my dad comes in about 10am climbs up to his stand. I can see him sit down. I turn my head to the right away from him since he can see all that left side. I just start to wait with anticipation, thinking how to tell him im better than he is etc, when BANG! I look over and dropped another 8 pointer in his tracks at 15 yards from him. The way he did it is he ran a drag line with scent and the buck picked up on it and it followed him to his stand... He was only sitting for 5 minutes if that. So he beat me again by getting 2 8 point bucks in 2 days. I learned the trick of using a drag line and used it in 2019. I walked from camp to the stand about a half mile away which sits in the middle of rows of red pine. My ladder happends to be on the far side from camp and so not to lure a deer to the back side of my tree i stayed about 150 yards to the right side and walked 200 or 300 yards passed it, then circled around and walked right centered at it until about 100 yards when i then drug the scent out toward the left side and then turned to come at my dripper set up at 25 yards like my bow sites are set up for... So guess what happend... about 45 minutes before dark... i saw horns coming straight at me about 175 yards away, he followed my drag path, made the broad side turn, lined up with my dripper set for my bow... i thought i was pretty cool that evening and it ended well. Im shooting 2 blade mechanical broadheads, i think they are called Rage Hypedermics. The arrow went completely through and almost no blood even though i sliced the the top of the heart. Tracking was fun looking for hoof marks when he turns and the slight blood trail. I add these details in case anyone has similar experiences with Rage. They are supposed to leave a 3 inch gash that should have painted the woods red but that didnt happen. I knew he coughed at impact, the direction he ran and that he crashed down about 125 yards. But my dad insisted on looking for blood and following it. I just hate having to work in the morning after not getting home until 2 am. Mid Michigan is about 200 miles from my home down state.
Congrats on a beautiful buck, Jeff. Way to show Dylan why you passed those other ones up. :). Couldn’t agree more on scent. My hunting strategy has become so simplified by listening to you and others - Now, all that I try and do with every activity is to try to be in the woods as little as possible, and when in the woods be as quiet and as non-intrusive as possible. Love the money I save on all those those things as well, which can now be invested into productive items like better/quieter stands and warmer gear etc. same for bait, at one point the light build went on that I would never even see a 2 1/2 year old by us in daylight on a bait pile. No bait = tons of money saved, and way fewer trips into the woods as already mentioned. Thanks again for all of the practical, sound practices you share.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 love your stuff, promote your stuff on our RUclips channel. May not always agree, but the love of the land and deer management and wildlife management is very clear that we are in agreement! Thanks again, and congratulations on your hard-earned success!
Definitely agree, here in NYS I’ve not only never had a buck come into a store bought scent, they have never paid attention to grunts, can calls or rattles either (with the exception of a doe I shot that responded to a can call early season once)...I too would rather have that money in my pocket for a cigar afterwards if I’m fortunate enough to harvest a deer. Love your channel👍 great info no BS. I harvested a nice private land New York State 9ptr yesterday, using much of the discipline you enforce here. Thank you for your time and effort. Congrats on that bruiser😄
Jeff, totally agree. Here in PA we have so many hunters...and now due to commercialism it seem as though everybody carries a can, a grunt call, and uses buck lure. Not quite like it was 39 years ago when I began bow-hunting...there weren't as many of us around. Wow, just realized how old I am!
i understand what your saying about scent and hunting the wind. You can smell as if you havent showered in a week because if your scent never crosses his nose he'll never know your there. I understand generations before us were knocking down big bucks without all the scent control products we have today. were not the first hunters to ever live respectfully speaking. Thanks for your tips and advice its very much appreciated.
You are clearly passionate about this, with lots of properties to hunt and a lot of time to study the deer that you are hunting (I'm incredibly appreciative of the advice that you give in your videos!). It makes sense that you have success without scent. I have as well, using many of the same strategies. However, during the rut, I've used estrus scent to create a "scent wall" in front of my scent cone when the wind is blowing from right to left across my stand (that puts my scent just outside the bedding area so any buck leaving in that direction will wind me). It worked like a charm last year, as I had a buck walk right up to that line about 70 yards out, pull a hard left, and head straight to where I'd tossed the estrus scent wick ten yards in front of me. I put an arrow in him. I don't always use scent, but when the wind isn't ideal for my stand during the rut, I've found it to be a very useful way of increasing my odds, and I've watched it work.
Congrats Jeff!! Going in this evening for a sit on a mock scrape had a major front last night, had our target buck Sunday evening at 5 pm in front of the stand I’m sitting in tonight, keep your fingers crossed!!
Great buck awesome video as always I also don't use deer scent you have one of the most educational deer hunting videos out there keep up the good work they're greatly appreciated
100 % correct !!! I have spooked more deer with scent than attracted them. Only once did I attract a big buck with a doe in heat scent and that was 25 years ago. In my state deer know that strong scent means danger. Good advice. Good luck
Hi Jeff, I just took my first buck ever today. It was my 5th deer hunting season. I've been following you for almost a year, watched hundreds of your videos. So much of my success is thanks to what I've learned from you. Much appreciated!
My life experience of hunting with scents has brought me to the same conclusion as you. Nothing works WAY better than something. I wish I hadnt spent so many hunts trying to use scent attractants. They dont always spook deer, but they seem to spook the older larger bucks.
Yes it don’t take much to spook a big deer 🦌 now. 30 plus years of hunting I’ve learned that I spray dead down wind on my rubber boots that’s bout it. A small buck will come to doe in heat but I’m not looking for small ones from here on. The ruts here now big time now. Great buck congratulations again brother. You deserve that one. Be safe and GOD BLESS you and your family Amen 🙏. I’ll let you know how tomorrow goes. My muzzle loader is more than ready. It’s dead on to. GOD BLESSED you with that big’un Amen 🙏.
Congrats on the buck! Very true on the scents. I used them and I had no success on them. So I won't waste my money anymore. And as far as the cover up scents, I stopped using those as well. I just play the wind and since I have done that, I've seen more deer (bucks and doe). Love what you teach and advise! Keep up the good work and congrats again on the buck!
Thanks a lot Christopher! I love not using scents 👍 But I do believe in covering my tracks in and out of the stand...clean clothes, scent elimination sprays, wash and detergents. BUT, either way...man, you HAVE to play the wind. Great advice... appreciate it!
I wash my clothes every time out of the woods, and if it isn't raining out, my clothes and boots hang out outside for a few days prior to me hitting the woods!
Great buck! Congrats! Where I hunt the wind is forever shifting. Forecast never gets it right and it will be different ten minutes after you get on stand. I play the wind best I can, but I do use scents and have drawn in some nice bucks with them. I do place them a good distance from me because, like you said, I don't want them coming right to me. Scent control and using the wind are primary for me. But scents are another tool in the belt. Thanks for the great video.
I learned not to use scent when this happened. I was hunting an active scrape from a tree stand in the evening. A nice buck came in behind me down wind from the scrape. I had put some doe in estrus urine in a small plastic 35mm film container with cotton in it near the scrape area. When the buck reached the scent line in the air, he stopped walking, looked towards scrape are, then looked straight ahead and stood there for 15 minutes without moving or looking. He actually put it in reverse for 15 feet and walked away from the area. That buck would not cross that scent line, it was unnatural for him. Live and learn. Thx for the video.
Congrats on the buck. As a newly started hunter this video contradicts everything Ive read online but thank you so much for sharing your insights I will definately try no scent out tonight and see if it helps. Jeff I love your videos and you are an inspiration I hope I can get a public land buck this year. I dont use a treastand yet I cant afford it so I have to hunt from the ground, so hopefully something comes by ! thanks again for all the wonderful content
Awesome buck Jeff!!! Congratulations!! So glad you were able to connect on a bruiser! Proves hard work, patience and determination pays off. I'm on my buckation for the next 10 days and the rut is really kicking in here in WV. Two huge cold fronts moving through the next 5 days!!! Have my sights on old Pronghorn, so hoping for the best. Thanks for all the information in your videos and hope you're not too worn out from dragging that bruiser out of the woods!
Thanks Jeff. I've been waiting for this specific video. You put things into perspective with your videos and this particular one seems very logical. I appreciate the video. As always, your tips are very helpful; thank you!
I spray my rubber boots with an autumn formula type scent killer. Then rub the soles with Evercalm. I have never had a deer either get my ground scent or freak out when crossing my trail. My route in is always strategic however.
CONGRATS!!! A very nice buck. I agree and have not used any sent other that elimination. We are still at it although activity seems to be picking up. Thanks again for sharing. Bob
I use EverCalm. The sticks I rub on surrounding trees and I have a hanging stick I put up. I’ve always had success With them. I’ve used the sprays and I agree that they trigger a response that deer do not like.
Congratulations Jeff, awesome video as ALWAYS,I just wish you would of showed us some different views of your buck, he looked like a beast , once again great buck buddy
I've been giving this a lot of thought lately and i think i'm gonna stop using deer scents and see how it works out. It's exactly like you said, i will end up leaving more of my scent around in the end. Thank you for sharing, keep'em coming, i love your instructional videos.
Congrats on that great buck. I wish I would have found your channel 6 months ago! I've learned a lot, and am trying to change some of my tactics to get more in line with your advice. Thanks for all the informative videos.
I've seen scents work on younger dumb bucks but never on a quality mature buck. The way I look at it to is the mature big bucks have a pretty good idea of what does are in the area and aren't going to be fooled by some random doe estrus. They visit community scrapes all spring/summer for this reason. My strategy for the rut is to hunt pinch points and areas where I know does are. If your goal is to shoot a 150 class buck or bigger save your money and invest in a comfy stand and sit all day or sleep in a bit and start that all day sit around mid morning. The biggest bucks are shot between 11-2 PM.
100% agreed. I don’t use any scent. I have not use anything in over a decade and I am way more successful shooting mature bucks with my strategy. The only thing I do use is ozone generator on my clothes for a half hour before I hit the field and send killer spray on my boots
I’m braving the north forest of Florida this weekend. And although you’re up north, a ton of this relates to any location. I’m from the big woods of MAINE so I’m very very new to this type jungle. Hard to be quiet, deer heavily pressured and unfortunately FWC allows people to use dogs for deer. I hate it. But I’ve listened to much of your prep tips and started seeing more doe. I went two years not seeing one deer down here. I’ve taken bucks in Maine and Colombia Tennessee but Florida is the most difficult Iv experienced before. Thank you!
I use scent in certain stands. Mainly a scent called active scrape. I make a mock scrape and set it up down wind but slightly in front of my expected wind in the direction I think deer might come from. I'm hoping a buck will cross that scent before he crosses mine and works the scrape broadside at 20 yards. It's worked 2 years in a row now.
I hit send on the previous post before I was finished. So anyways I still use scents sometimes depending on the when an where and conditions of the particular hunt I’m doing that day. So I’ll occasionally use estrus early near end of October ... sometimes I’ll catch an over zealous buck that way. But once the rut kicks into gear I’ve been finding myself using little or no scents at all. If I do use them I drop them on the ground where they naturally would be keeping any drags or anything that might retain my scent out of the equation.
Hey Jeff I also used your way of making Mark scrapes and rubs and with the hanging vine that is been very busy and all three of them I made it’s awesome. I need Mark scrapes and rubs before and I never had no good luck until after washing your video
Agree to a point. Will use a calming scent on my feet etc. Also have had great luck with just peeing on my mock scrapes! Glad I found you a couple of seasons ago. Thanks.
Congratulations, I was waiting for this video. The doe and small buck day sightings are off the chart for me this year, one shooter that wouldn't step out of the burdocks.
Nice buck sir! I havent used attractant scents or lure since Fred Trost broke that myth, I did have luck with one, my own, I think bucks are curious more than not about urine in the woods.
I remember that...and a certain scent company got schooled...coz of a b.s. ad campaign that they couldn't back up..Then they sued Trost who then got himself schooled with a law degree! I do believe Fred was right..but somehow the scent company won. I believe they are out of business now...Every scent bottle of so called doe in estrus to me smells like they dip it out of a stinking outhouse..
I have used my own urine drag and had a young buck follow it about ten yds and shot him. The very first time I tried it..I tried it a few more times..nothing..just lucky I guess.
I have the exact same backpack, label, brand everything. I’ve had it for about 30 years now. 😂 I’ve purchased dozens of backpacks since then, for some reason I always go back to that little old school bottom land print pack. Main reason it’s soft and quiet, but everything under the sun stick to it. Washes well also.
Glad I found you on you tube great videos you make very good sense about hunting deer something's I knew but just didn't know why until u explained them thank you
Congrats on the dandy buck Jeff! My comments to the video topic: I've personally witnessed many negative responses to lures/scents that I abandoned them several years ago. The only commercial product that I buy and use is scent eliminators.
I 100% agree. Was just debating this with people in our local bait and tackle shop tonight. If your hunting the wind all that junk is going where you don’t expect deer to come from!! I will say I’m having a rough season and yet to see any buck while in the stand. Saw a couple fawns alone tonight which wasn’t the case yesterday morning so I’m hoping things are about to heat up, no pun intended lol
Great Buck. I have often struggled with the idea of using scents. I always thought I might be leaving my scent along with the attractant. I will say I did have one young fork buck follow attractant scent 150 yards, to with in 6 yds of my brush blind. But that's the only time. I plan a hunt this afternoon evening using the wind. Wind should be coming out of the Northwest. I plan on hiding the brush on the Northeast side of the field. The deer usually come out on the northside center of the field around 4pm and feed on the beans.. I'm hoping the wind will be in my favor. No one has hunted this part of the farm or the property to the North of it, in 2 years.
Will say I agree with u to a point I will not put out sent wick around stand or blind but I do like the put down some doe estrus tails once in awhile I have had luck with that but I will stop dragging the sent when I get about 20 to 25 yards of the stand. Congratulation on the buck
Thanks Anthony! What I worry about with scent trails is a mature buck being curious...and then noticing a piece of my own scent because I attracted him to my own scent trail too. They can separate all scent...good or bad at the same time.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 yes I hear you there one way I help cut down on the chance of him picking up my scent is I'll use a stick with some strings that I sprayed with some sort of scent control product and drag it beside me never directly behind me and the other funny things is will usually buy the cheapest doe estrus scent I can find and has worked better than these 15$ to 20$ plus bottles I see people buy.
I sit on the ground in my ghillie suit, with my back against a tree. The only scent I use are Tinks Smokin Sticks. I got a shoulder shot on a buck Monday around 430 pm. 72 hours later he was back. Unfortunately that was the LAST thing I expected, and was facing the wrong way watching the does come into the field. He came in to about 10 feet away from me before he noticed me and ran the other way.
Back in the late 80’s early 90’s, we hunted in SE Ohio. My cousin would be eating a sandwich, drinking coffee, put down his meal, and shoot a 10 point.
Never seen deer while using any kind of scent. Buddy has had luck with it but always young deer. Following your advice and doing as I have done, just better, I’ve had the most successful month of my short hunting career. Primitive rifle season opens tomorrow and I’m off work starting next weekend. Hopefully I get a shot at something.
@@joeystalin4044 One of my biggest and oldest deer @6+ years came into wildlife research golden estrus. I use it every year until 2nd week of December and always nail a 4+ year old. It's always best to have a decoy if you're bow hunting because they won't come in range if they don't see a deer.
@@Schnot that's why you don't want to take young bucks, a mature doe has on average 30# more useable meat then a young buck so the "can't eat the horns" comment is out of date and a running joke among qdm'ers
Nice buck jeff..your spot on with your videos...watchin em for years..i hunt small private parcels in NE OHIO. Always on pins and needles not to spook deer.as i cant alter properties as needed. GREAT JOB ON ALL U DO.... THANKS
My grandfather hunted , trapped and sometimes guided in northern Maine. I remember one day in the mid 70's , my dad showing him a bottle of some doe urine. He opened it, took a sniff and said " whats this shit ? " " who buys this ?" Now there's an entire isle of it in every store.
This is why your awesome! I 100 percent agree, I see guys like to spray the stuff in the wind, I dont want to alert down wind deer to anything more chance for them to pick me up, so it dosent do anygood for upwind deer where i expect to see them from. Second I have early on in my hunting soaked and put out the scent wicks as lure and yardage markers, only to have a buck come in and stay right in the thick on the perimeter of the shooting lanes and not come in because he simply cant see the deer where shes supposed to be lol. I do use hunter specialties earth fresh scent wafers in the bags I store my clothes in, I will say I smell like a pile of dirt but have had mature bucks lay down with my wind blowing right up there nose and it dosent seem to impact them. They almost seem to like it they lick there nose and sniff short and fast reminds me of like sniffing a fresh cut pile of cedar chips. Awesome buck by the way I was just thinking yesterday when it had been two days with no video you had probably got one! Congrats!!!!!
I have come to this same conclusion regarding the non-use of urine products and scents in general, after a late winter hunt last season. We got 12 inches of snow on the first day of the hunt and it was my first time hunting in these conditions. What made this a revelation was the fact that for the next four days it became very easy to see the recent deer activity. Day two greeted us with lots of deer trails in and out of cut bean fields. You couldn’t miss the new deer droppings and urine spots. By the last day of the hunt there were deer droppings and urine spots all over our hunting property. And that is what you are competing with when you splash your $15.00 bottle of estrus urine onto a wick or into a scrape. Your competition is the very natural smells that are everywhere in the deer woods and being replenished constantly. I would find it highly unlikely that the products that we all buy and use could not somehow smell ‘different’ to the deer, at best raising curiosity, at worst spooking the animal! I can say that I have killed two bucks where estrus urine product stopped one deer and possibly drew another rutting buck past my stand. That said, it is a very rare event and hard to say if the deer might not have ambled by without it. As Jeff puts it, hunt the right locations! Food sources, scrapes, funnels, and you are hunting right. Stay scent free with your human odors too!
20 degree temperature drop this morning, pressure rising and leveled off at 8 am, Perfect wind, clean boots and clothes, November 9th, white oak acorns everywhere. Sat until 2:30. No deer. They confuse me sometimes.
Well congratulations are definitely in order on a in my opinion a dream buck your the man I don’t use any of that stuff just be clean don’t make much noise if any getting to and from your stand undetected that’s all the attractant you need as always great video
Although I agree with most things you say, I have learned how to use doe-in-heat scent very well. They have also saved me on some close calls of deer blowing my cover but because the scent was there they were more focused on trying to find that smell even though they knew something wasn't right. I had a 140" buck come completely down wind from me last week and never once knew I was there. He even left a group of does to come find that smell. So to rule out scents completely I think is wrong but it works for me and has shown me great results during the rut.
And I agree but I also know using doe in heat to early will alarm them. Also I found less is more. You don’t need a whole bottle to attract a buck. Too much will also set off alarms. I use only a couple scents and only so often. Not every time I go out. Sometimes I don’t use them at all. Depends on when it is and what time if the day.
I get why people choose to use or not to use scents. I had wind switch on me while in a ground blind so I put some estrus out and had a nice mature buck come right up a tree line where my wind was blowing. Sometimes they work and sometimes they probably don’t.
Awesome buck. And I’m one that uses scent. Until now. I used it Friday morning. And does came in and they acted funny. Like something isn’t right. Kinda weird. Then a spike buck followed them and the scent wasn’t working near as good as the real thing. He chased the does Nice show and funny to watch. I learned from watching deer and now you are my teacher.
Scent requires the wind to blow it to the deer. Assuming the scent is within bow range this also means the wind is blowing your scent right along with it.
I respect what you have to say and watch your very informative videos all the time. However, on this one I'm on the fence. I've had way too much success with rutting bucks running directly to my location to give up using scents. Everything you said makes sense and, perhaps, I might improve my chances on MATURE bucks if I followed this advice but I fear I would lose more overall chances than I'd gain. I guess I will have to give it some thought, tough thing to give up!
I’ve experimented with many scents. I find that regular doe pee seems to be ok. Never had problems with it spooking deer and it seems to calm them.. Estrus on the other hand, I’ve found to be a double edged sword. It does attract cruising bucks looking for doe. But I’ve found it many times to spook actual doe. Several times I’ve had a doe being pursued by a buck spook upon smelling the estrus and turn around taking the buck away they were previously bringing right past me.
I actually put down some tink 69 about a week ago near my blind and had a group of 3 doe come in and they totally were smelling it and it made them very nervous and they eventually trotted off after they had their noses in the air. I think it would depend on the situation for a buck, he might come by and stop at it for 5 seconds and give you a shot but it seems like most of the time if a buck is cruising by he never even notices it.
Ttt
One of my best scent tricks is to put old spice in a scent dripper where you don't want deer to go.
Had a place where people were shooting across the fence on me so i fixed them up.
That hilarious
Funny you mention Old Spice. One of the most successful whitetail hunters I know is Bud Benjamin. He bags at least a couple mature deer every year. When asked what kind of hunting deodorant he uses he replied "Old Spice". Not that it attracts deer, but as the video says, it is much more important to hunt the wind. And he an expert at hunting the wind.
@@FiveMinuteDiscipleship brilliant!!! lol
Do the Deer wear masks ?
I use Ivory soap to keep them out of my vegetable garden.
I love that you didn't sacrifice an available shot to get it on camera. great buck!
Thanks Mike...hunt first, for sure...means a lot that you can appreciate that!
There are quite a few cedar trees in my area and I have always stored my hunting clothes in a tote with cedar branches
Man that is great to hear Nick...so happy for you!! Thank YOU too...I appreciate it and you are very welcome.
Corey Price I was hunting on the 20 acres I own! 🏹🦌
Same here November 4 south eastern Oh thanks Jeff
I really appreciate you taking your time to share your hard earned lessons with us. MUCH THANKS AND RESPECT
Congratulations Jeff! Beautiful buck!
Thank you very much...really appreciate it!
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 love your stuff, promote your stuff on our RUclips channel. May not always agree, but the love of the land and deer management and wildlife management is very clear that we are in agreement! Thanks again, and congratulations on your hard-earned success!
Another masterpiece! Your logic and laser vision really inform your audience. . Congrats on your buck!!
Agreed! Congrats on the deer Jeff another great buck! Thanks for all the content you guys provide.
Thank you and man that all sounds perfect! Good luck! I was sitting over a mock scrape when this fella came in, btw...
Mr. Splitz as I call him showed up Sunday evening at 5 pm. Had around 4 minutes of video of him
Jeff do you have a email I could send you some buck pics to?
Christopher Coombs I’m the same way!! The deer are not stupid🦌😂
100% agree with you, especially in a small parcel where bucks eat close and bed even closer lol. Great talk. You inspire me to go hunt man!
Lots of great lessons learned over time. Thank you for speeding everyone’s maturity in hunting! Great videos!
Congratulations! Great buck! Always enjoy watching your videos. Always something to learn.
Thank you very much Corey your comments mean a lot to me! Of folks aren't learning from the videos no reason to make them 😉 Good luck this season!
Went "scent free" this year for the first time. Arrowed a nice 9 pt. Wont go back to the "deer lure scents". Great advice, thanks
Congrats on another stud!!
Here in central Ohio the chasing peaked this weekend. I was able to close the deal on a 6 yr old 8.
Congrats on a great buck! Love the channel. As a small property owner it’s always very encouraging to me.
Thank you!
Nice Buck deer Jeff. You need a TV show. Especially with all the NO BS knowledge you put out. Look forward to the next video.
I use tarsal for scrapes I run cameras on. Works great but I dont hunt over them. And I only put the dripper and camera out when it is raining.
Congratulations. Your methods validated once again. Hoping to get out next Saturday near Watertown, WI.
Agreed ... The more you use of anything the better chance a deer will figure you out ... Good luck
Man I've been in those shoes. Spent tons of money on the estrogen and all that stuff and nothing. When I stopped then bingo!!!! Love your videos
And I still haven't hunted the two new stand set ups, one in a bedding area and one a travel corridor.
What a great show he had, how to hunt it, how to take it, how to cook it. Wish it was still on, a outdoors show worth watching.
Nice buck congrats!!! I love your educational videos. Keep them coming
I have the exact same backpack, label, brand everything. I’ve had it for about 30 years now. 😂
I’ve purchased dozens of backpacks since then, for some reason I always go back to that little old school bottom land print pack.
For those really mature bucks try some worthers originals 😆
Its like catnip for old people lmao
Never seen deer while using any kind of scent. Buddy has had luck with it but always young deer.
Following your advice and doing as I have done, just better, I’ve had the most successful month of my short hunting career. Primitive rifle season opens tomorrow and I’m off work starting next weekend. Hopefully I get a shot at something.
Tinks has worked for me many times.
Ditto, but the best u are getting is a small 8, no older than 2.5yrs
Can’t eat the horns.
Schnot But you can boil them forever!
THANKS
I agree with you about the scent..i messed up one a mature buck useing :scrape active ..a few years ago
My grandfather hunted , trapped and sometimes guided in northern Maine.
I remember one day in the mid 70's , my dad showing him a bottle of some doe urine. He opened it, took a sniff and said " whats this shit ? " " who buys this ?"
Now there's an entire isle of it in every store.
I have deer hitting my grape vine mock scrape every day. Thanks for the great information.
No bashing ! I use all products and gadget's and have gotten deer
Guess I should have watched the whole thing before commenting. 😆
Ha, no...I appreciate you making that point!! So very important for folks to realize this...
Awesome buck Jeff! Appreciate the tips on scent control and not using scents. Well done!
Another great & informative video. Keep up the great work. Awesome buck!
Thank you very much Kevin...it was great hunt with memories to last a lifetime ☺️
Nice buck!! Alot of dead ash trees behind you. Taking up space for sunlight producing woody browse 😁 Love ur channel!
WTG Jeff! That's a great day day for your hard work and a beautiful animal.
